View Full Version : "Scaling" analog cable?

Okay, as I plan out my HTPC path (and read everything I can on this forum and AVS), I'm a little fuzzy on a few (er, a lot!) of things!

Let's say I have a HTPC with one or two PVR250s installed and an analog cable feed into them. The output would be to a HD-ready TV (Sony XBR910) using a Radeon 9000 Pro through DVI. I know that the PVRs are not HD compatible nor are they directly compatible with dScaler, but can I somehow increase the analog cable resolution (both for recorded and live)? Is this done inherently through the Radeon via the resolution I set?

I'm not sure if I'm asking this correctly, but in summary, how can I get to "near HDTV" quality/resolution using a PVR250 and (insert software/hardware here)?

If I understood correctly from the guys at Digital Connection, the MyHD-120 can upconvert non-HD standard signals into a higher "HD-like" resolution - just wondering if something similar can be done while I wait for the HD-version of Sage.... :D

Thanks...

Here's a post I found at AVS that outlines what I want to do. Because the PVR250 isn't directly compatible with dScaler, is this impossible? Can I still use the dScaler plug-ins and Sage to upconvert live TV to a higher resolution?

The DScaler plugins perform the de-interlacing/filtering. Your Radeon card will scale to whatever output resolution you've set up. So, you can get HDTV output resolutions - but the quality will not be comparable to a native feed (still pretty good if the 480i input feed is clean...).

Thanks! I've heard some concerns about PQ on HDTV-ready sets using analog cable. Sounds like Sage with dScaler plug-ins will help crank that up as good as it can get.

Most appreciated!

Sage with Dscaler looks way better than even the cleanest analog feed into my 34XBR800. Dscaler plugins are supported out of the box with sage, and with the PC feeding the HDTV through a transcoder at 720p, my picture looks pretty good. HDTV still looks better, but that's expected obviously.
