For the latest update...
I can't speak for everyone of course but that's all that *I* wanted and still want... A good regular update on the progress of things to come. It shows that things are not stagnant. :thumb:

I totally agree.
I won't hold my breath untill the end of the week, because as the update suggests, thing happen.
It is definately good to see an *update* though.
Thanks to Opus and the team for that nugget of information.
I'm now lookin forward to the end of the week!

Agree, thanks Opus4!
WOOT! Big thanks for the update
Thanks opus---a good flow of information keeps us happy. I really hope this comes out this weekend and not later though because I am getting married next weekend and will have absolutely NO TIME to even install the beta--let alone tinker with it--unless I can postpone my honeymoon:) Don't think the wife-to-be would like that too much though.

My girlfriend goes off on a trip for three weeks starting this weekend! So not only can my life be totally devoted to Sage, but I don't even get the complaints about cables and CDs strewn across the living room floor :)
Then she gets to come back to a spangly new PVR with lots of funky new features.
Best timing ever! :p

Awesome. I am looking forward to it.
I actually like the BEGINNING beta the most... More things to submit issues on, etc. That is the fun part of beta testing - working out the kinks.

Yes, this would be just in time for a little tweaking and customazation before the fall season starts...
Hopefully, I'll have everything up and running, stable of course, by the end of August...
I'm just wondering what the impact on STV's will be?

Well, first of all, I'm not sure why the thread thanks me -- I'm just passing along "approved" news. Anyway...

Only if it has COMSKIP support... Or if COMSKIP support can be quickly added. I won't live without THAT!

I guess you get the thanks because you do a damn good job.
You walk the fine line between censoring, allowing free speech and giving us updates.
Not an easy path to tread given that human nature is to shoot the messenger if they don't like the message.
I appreciate what you do, and the time you put in to making these forums viable and constructive.
So thats why Im saying thanks.
Cheers
Mark
Well said parkimar!! Thanks again Opus4, as always great work!

This is good news. With BTV 3.72 released (http://blogs.snapstream.com/2005/07/15/beyond-tv-37-released/), they are trying to play catch up with SageTV with features like Plextor ConvertX support and Non-Circular-Buffer recordings, we need a new update to keep them behind. :)
I don't expect much from 3.0, but any improvement is better than none. I'll defnitely beta test it. :smokin:

It was just an update on 3.0... It's in the sticky right above this. :)
I just applaud the fact that we got an update on status without prodding for it, but most are happy I'm sure that Opus announced that the public 3.0 beta will PROBABLY be out by the end of this week.

"without prodding for it". Haa!
I guess if you ignore all the posts over the last year, it's possible to imagine that nobody has prodded for it.
A rational observer would notice that information is delivered when it is ready to be delivered, and that asking for information is unrelated to the publishing thereof.

I wonder if it will be released only for windows or for Linux as well.. :) Would love to give it a try on Linux platform.

Only if it has COMSKIP support... Sage are very unlikely to put comskip in the default install for legal reasons...
JasonJoel

Yup, I would expect that. I know I wouldn't stick my neck out if I were them...
That is why I said 'or could be easily added'.
Really all it needs is to support the playback support.. Doesn't need to support generating the TXT files, as that is very easily done outside of Sage.

That's cool i just hope no major show stopping bug pop crop up before the end of the week when they release it :)
chrysek i maybe wrong on this but i thought i recalled hearing that freys was only going to release the linux version in a premade linux box system and not the software because of how difficult linux is to setup and not wanting to glut the boards with linux questions that they don't have time to answer. So i don't think their will be a linux downloadable version of sagetv not until it gets easier to setup linux at anyrate.
As i said i could be wrong as i don't pay attention to linux and related things much but thats what i recall reading somewhere on the forum.

I thought the main change with 3.0 was being able to run on a linux platform? I wouldn't be expecting a lot of new features, but would love to be proved wrong. All the really interesting functional improvements that we all like (comskip, dvd archiving, etc...) probably can't be integrated out of legal fears. This is why so many people like the Myth platform, because all these features are integrated in Myth.
I wonder how easy the various user STV's will be able to be integrated in a Linux version? I know comskip can run on Linux already, but it doesn't look like many others could.
With linux video support getting better and better (the latest Myth version has much better XVMC support - a Via C3 can now decode 1080i with no stuttering), and VMR9 confusion with windows video acceleration, linux is looking better and better.
Thanks,
Mike

The TV industry is just now grasping the idea that computers can do this stuff. About the only thing I would give them credit for right now is not condeming video on the internet as a whole (similar to how the RIAA hated mp3 just for being an mp3) and is actually starting to try things out to counteract it. Sure it may be DRM'd up the wazoo but its better than doing nothing.
I still wouldnt trust it however until its been proven to be legal.

I saw mentioned in another thread that BTV's system is a kind of generic chapter detection -- that also happens to detect commercials as chapters. Also the skip is manual (you have to press a button) not automatic. This could be just enough to avoid lawsuits (as the *intent* is not to only skip commercials)...
Of course the other explanation is that HTPCs are still under the radar of the TV industry

Yeah, that is my concern. About a week ago I had a couple of TV content folks over and was showing them my SageTV setup. One of them is an add buyer. When he saw how I could set it up so that I never saw the commercials, he started asking lots of questions. He's even called me twice since, just to talk about that. He and his team had no idea PCs could do this.

Yeah, our salespeople where I work are pretty well clueless as far as technology goes. They think changing something small in our e-commerce software should be simple, they just don't realize what all has to be done on the back-end to get what they want done.
I did find it funny that they didn't realize you could skip commercials, or even edit them out :). I thought everybody knew you could do that with 'Tivo' Devices :p.

AFAIK, its the same comskip used in sage. I use BTV and it does background processing detecting black frames and mark them ins and outs. As for the automatic skip, I think there's a plugin for that. But if you think that not making auto skip will "avoid lawsuits," then I can live with that.
JasonJoel
07-23-2005, 03:56 PM
BTV's chapter detection is certainly NOT the same as COMSKIP. COMSKIP (and in the future ShowAnalyzer) use many more (and in my opinion) and more sophisticated algorithms than merely black frame detection.
But that is probably somehat off-topic... :)

Well, I wasn't referring to Jare Jones' Show Analyzer, last time I tried ComSkip was using malore's version (http://www.sage-community.org/index.cgi/wiki/ComSkip). And according to the documents, "it just uses the blank scene detection." I'm not sure if Jere based SA on Comskip, but yes, I'm aware that SA is more sophisticated.

Comskip uses other things too, like CC key words, network logo, etc.
