Ive read in other threads here and in the avs forum that people are running thier resolutions at 720 x 480. Im assuming this is because its NTSC DVD resolution.

but how do you change your resolution to that? do you need a 3rd party application like powerstrip. or is there a hidden setting or registry change that can do this.

Also is this for HDTV or SD tv?

I would bet they are using Powerstrip or something. I know I can use that with my Radeon to do it.

I am running my rez at 1120x630 via DVI input. I know this is fairly unique, but it works very well for my JVC RPTV. It is an overscanless 1280x720 resolution...

I get a rock stable picture every time (whereas with 856x480, I was having sync problems), and both Sage and PowerDVD convert their picture to full screen with no loss of quality.

I used Powerstrip to create this resolution and am using a Radeon 9200 (fanless).

i have yet to understand all of these strange resolution settings. not having an HDTV, i wonder if its necessary at all to change my desktop resolution when outputting via s-video. my tv is a 27 inch sony standard def. it does have a component in, but is that really going to improve my picture? ive seen vga to component cables but i think those are catered to HDTV and projector based systems.

just kinda lost with all of the possible options...

I have my rez as 720 x 480 on my FX 5200. This is a supported rez of my driver.

I am connecting to a 25" Standard Def TV using an composite out put.

I run at 720x480 through a Key Digital VGA->Composite transcoder. This is from an Nforce2 chipset based motherboard using it's onboard video (a type of GEForce) into a Sony 34XBR800. I use Powerstrip to set the custom timings.

Do you have trouble with the epia flicker filter setting? I have to go into the display settings under XP and turn off the flicker filter every time I reboot, otherwise the TV looks like hell.

Answers:

1. You need an external app like PowerStrip for most ustom resolutions. Your video card and video drivers have to accept custom resolutions. All Radeons with up to date drivers will do this. I have no idea about other cards.

2. You really won't see a difference without a high resolution television.,

3. Yes, the 720 scan line resolutions are because most, if not all HDTV's support them.

4. Resolutions like 856x480 or, what I use, 856x484 are derivatives of 540p based resolutions, which, again, most if not all, HDTV's support. The reason for the reduced number of scanlines (480 or 484 instead of 540) is to reduce overscan for your desktop.

5. It's very important to use a program like PowerStrip, so as not to damage your television. That is, you can force all resolutions to adhere to a 33.5kHz scan rate and and a 60 Hz refresh rate. This is probably the reason for the earlier poster's sync problems.

6. None of this is very meaningful, in my opinion, if you're using an S-Video cable and/or you don't have an HDTV.

Yes. Save the money you'd blow on a card with TV Out and just use a regular video card with a transcoder. Of course, you need component video in.

As an added benefit, you really haven't played Unreal Tournament until you've played it on 55" HDTV ;^)

Hi all,

To those using the EPIA-M motherboards with the CLE266 video chipset:

I am currently using:
CLE266_XP2K_120501_wIshld_logod.zip (http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/video/CLE266_XP2K_120501_wIshld_logod.zip)

These drivers give me the best quality output and the best control over my TV scan settings.

The drivers specifically for the M series motherboards (Version 6.13.10.0021-01.19.01 dated 11/26/2002) don't seem to work as well for me, and the latest CLE266 drivers (CLE266_XP2K_169420_wIShld_logod.zip) don't work at all for the EPIA's.

As an added benefit, these drivers retain their settings after a reboot. Also, when I completely reinstalled the last time, I started by loading these drivers and, as I recall, I didn't have to hook up both a monitor and my TV at the same time. Since I have my system attached to the TV only, hooking up a separate monitor is a real pain.

does anyone know what the difference is from the component input on my 27" SDTV Sony WEGA from the ones on a HDTV. when i look at transcoders, it says that it will not work on any SDTV.

whats the benefit of component inputs on a SDTV? arent i still getting 480i from svideo and my tv is not getting any better than that right?
