I record both SD and HD shows. It would be nice to be able to filter out HD recordings when using my MVP since obviously I can't play them on the MVP. I probably already know the answer to this question but I'll ask it anyway. Is there any way to filter HD shows (so that they don't show up) when using the MVP? It's not that big of a deal, but it seems like it would be a nice feature since if you accidentally try to play an HD show weird things happen to the MVP (sometimes locking up).

I concurr..
Hopefully this can be a feature in the next release for the MVP.

Yeah, this would definitely be a 'Very Good Thing' to add :).

or better yet, have the next release offer transcoding of HDTV to SDTV so that the MVP can play it and not have to filter out HDTV in the first place.

I'd rather see them seperate the MVP client to another process, so I could run it on a dedicated PC (NOT my server, it's running enough as-is, and my MVP suffers from it as is now, I coudln't imagine running it and transcoding a HD recording to SD, or even transcoding a DIVX, I take a HUGE performance hit when the MVP is on any menu).

This would be nice but doesn't eliminate the need to filter out HD recordings. Even if I had HD recordings transcoding to SD for playback on the MVP, I still would want the original HD recordings to remain intact. Therefore, I would still want a way to filter them so they don't show up on the MVP.

The way I understand transcoding is that it creates a SD video on the fly without converting the original HD/AVI recordings. How much CPU that will require is currently unknown.

But, yah, I guess an additional filter option in the recordings list would not be that hard to implement.

Yeah, that is how it should work. But what I was saying was to be able to get the functionality that the filter would give me, I would need to transcode HD to SD and then have the HD recording deleted. Otherwise, I will still see the HD recording on the MVP. And this isn't what I would want since I'm actually not that worried about being able to watch the HD stuff (transcoded) on the MVP. I would just like to not see it show up on the MVP in the first place. :)

So, what I'm saying is, I like your idea and wouldn't mind seeing it as an option but it doesn't replace the need for the filter.

I understand your want of a filter, but I don't quite understand this... But what I was saying was to be able to get the functionality that the filter would give me, I would need to transcode HD to SD and then have the HD recording deleted. Otherwise, I will still see the HD recording on the MVP.

IF the transcoding feature works the way I think it does, you would not need to do any deleting. Just select the HD recording on the MVP, and the Sage server transcode and send the MVP an SD version. Once you are done watching the show, if you were to go back to the recording list, you'd only see the original HD recording.

I see what you are saying. That assumes it transcodes on the fly as soon as you pick an HD show from the MVP. That would definitely be nice but I'm thinking we might be waiting a long time for that feature. :) At best I think we might get transcoding that can be done on a schedule or based on some set of rules or something. For Sage to know to transcode an HD recording because it was being viewed by an MVP is probably possible, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. :)

Definitely second this one. I don't like for the server to have to do anything besides record and send shows, music, pictures, etc. Stays alot happier when that's all it has to do.
