I installed the trial version of SageRecorder and it doesn't recognize my AverTVtuner card. Can anyone help me solve this problem? I am running Windows XP

SageRecorder only supports hardware encoding cards. Looking up the AverTV, indicates all their cards are S/W encoding.

Need a little help. What does that mean? I'm an amateur with PVRs. Thanks

Sorry, Hardware encoding means the encoding process (the algorythm's that compress the signal with a mathematical formula) occurs entirely on board the card such as the Hauppauge PVR250 instead of the PC's CPU.

This configuration allows for a more robust system, rather than relying on the CPU to perform the operations.

See this page for a glossary and explanation of terms.

Thanks for the explanation. That really helped. I am concluding that Sage listens to the output "pipe" from the board and cannot be altered to listen to a different "pipe"- software output. Total bummer.

I guess I can pack my Aver card and go get a different one that does hardware encoding.

Again, thanks for your help.

Sage's architecture is fully capable of listening to different 'pipes'. We even support doing capture across a network. There's even a plugin architecture so someone could implement this if they wanted....but no ones been interested yet.

Great. First question, where is the plugin? Second question, suggestions on the implemenation. I'm certainly willing to try but need a little help on the requirements, clues, etc. Thanks

The way it works is by emulating the "Network Encoder" feature that SageTV supports. A "Network Encoder" is a capture device that SageTV controls using TCP/IP. I've posted the protocol on here a few times, if you can't find it let me know. What you would need to do is write an application that contains a TCP/IP server that responds to the commands in the protocol, and then controls the capture hardware appropriately.

Network encoders are also described a little more in the Customizations section of our website.

Thank you very much for the help everyone. I really appreciate it. This has made my PVR learning experience much more pleasent and rewarding.

One last note, Sage products are great. They are so easy to install and use.
