View Full Version : Load SageTV Linux on a Tivo?

Has anyone thought of installing SageTV on a Tivo box? All the necessary hardware is there..... USB ethernet, hardware MPEG decoder, remote..... you won't need a keyboard.......... :)

If someone could either use the OSD and Mplayer plugins to get a Tivo box to work, it would be a reallllly cheap box with a hardware decoder.

Just hoping. :)

I was wondering the same thing. I have a series 2 Tivo that I would love to switch over to Sage.

I was a little upset when I discontinued my Tivo service and learned I couldn't use the box to even manually set a timed recording. I was going to sell it on ebay, but never got around to it.:)

It would basically be the same issue as the Roku. It's not x86 based so to do it you would need an x86 emulator at the very least. Last I knew the Tivo OS is open source so it could be worth playing with if you have an old tivo and a spare hdd so as not to mess up the Tivo stuff.

If SageTV decided to also compile SageLinux in PowerPC for this purpose..... and released a different ISO..... then you wouldn't need the emulator.

i have access to an old Tivo no longer being used. anyone know of anyway to load any third party software onto it? I dont care at all about keeping it in its original form and would be more than happy to load a custom kernal on it.

thanks for the link - but thats more for people who just want to extend the use of their Tivo so they can access their files. The tivo in question is pretty much junk - it was updated by Tivo so that unless I bother to go back to paying 13 a month again, it doesnt do much of anything. I would rather like to find a way I can run SageClient or SagePlaceshifting or something on it so that I can turn it into an MVP of sorts.

Unless you can find yourself a good reverse engineer I think this task is nearly impossible.
