I've been waiting for the new wireless extender and see that the new wired version has been released. What are the differences between the old version and the new ( does the new version address the "dark picture" problem?)
Any ETA's on the wireless version?

I think the only difference is that there is an SPDIF output. Do you know anywhere that has MVPs in stock ... new or old? I can't find any.

What kind of extenders works with sagetv? The Hauppauge MVP (http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/products/data_mediamvp.html). The new extender being mentioned here is a newer version of the MVP.

My take on it is that Hauppauge released a wired version of the wireless box about 2 weeks ago(wireless card removed). People in these threads have reported getting them and then with some beta updates have them working. When I go to sage's store I get mixed results but as of 2 days ago I sometimes get the extender listed as a "new" item which I assume is the new release (modified?) from Hauppauge, avaliable and $99.

I want to pick up a new wired version of the MVP (not from the Sage store, since I already have a license). Does the new one have a different model number, or is it still '1000' ? I want to be sure to pick up the right one, since I couldn't find any other retailer mentioning the new SPDIF out ...
Thanks,
Dirk

I got the new wired one with S/PDIF output from SageTV about two weeks ago, but it quit working after about 2 hours and I had to send it to Hauppauge for replacement (still waiting).
It still showed Model 1000 on the box, and the box photos did not show the S/PDIF output. In fact, the manual hadn't been updated either, and there was no mention anywhere of the digital output (no addendum sheet, and the black RCA jack wasn't even labeled on the unit). Even Hauppauge's web site doesn't mention the S/PDIF output. The only way that I was able to tell I had the new unit was by opening the box and looking at the jacks on the back of the unit. If there's a 4th (black) RCA jack right next to the Ethernet port, then it's a new unit.
I think Hauppauge stumbled by not identifying and promoting the new feature, but I suspect that they hoped a silent transition would prevent return of unsold inventory of the older units.
BTW, the unit that I received showed the following on the bottom label: Model 86019, Rev H2, Lot 1506.

Thanks jgsouthard for the detailed info !

good to know. I didn't realize the non-wireless versions also had the SPDIF output!

I got one from sage about 10 days ago, its a Rev H2 aswell. the thing works great but the low brightness is a problem still, it actual kind of pisses me off, that they have not resolved this long and outstanding issue.
For now its better than my old sage client box that I'm used too, but no HD or DVD for the new extender. so if your sitting on the fence like I was for so long, you decided. But no brightness control/fix & dvd and I don't know why Sage did not add in a brightness control or even to add the DVD function to play from the server.

If I understand correctly then it is not possible to play DVDs with the MVP, correct ? So my question is, is there any source at all which could take advantage of the SPDIF out (instead of using the normal stereo out) ?
I was thinking that it would be nice to have an option to hook the MVP to my surround receiver via SPDIF, but now that I think about it it might not make much sense ... ? Any thoughts on the usefulness of the SPDIF out ?
Edit: I just did another search and found that VOB playback seems to be possible. If this is the case, will the AC3 be passed through SPDIF to my receiver ?
Thanks,
Dirk

Thanks Bob, missed that one ...
So I guess Jeffrey's wink suggests that it still might be a good idea to have SPDIF/out in the future ... :)

I haven't had any experience yet with the MediaMVP, but for a couple of years I've been using a SageTV PC direct connected to my TV and HT system. I used a sound card that had digital out (Creative Audigy 2 NX), so I connected digital to my HT receiver and analog directly to the TV. I set my receiver to use Dolby Pro Logic decoding on that input.
What I found was that even on standard TV broadcast recordings off cable TV, the sound through the digital output and receiver was amazingly better than through the TV. I realize that much of this was just the quality of the amp and speakers and might have been nearly as good with the analog output connected through the HT system, but I'd like to think S/PDIF helped as well.
