Hi,
Thanks for the help guys. I will just backup the whole sage folder and install on top of what is there.
Hopefully get it done tonight if I can get the boys in bed on time.:)

Make sure and accept all file overwrites when extracting the zip file. This will ensure you get the latest version of all files.

Dirk,
I'm trying to convert from a Medio(HDeeTV theme)/Sage set-up to using SageMC exclusively. I miss having the current temp and weather condition in the corner of the home page. Is it possible to add this to SageMC? (Of course, I may be the only one who would want this!! )
Thanks.
I added this to the main menu for something I was working on a few months back. I'll dig it up and send it to flachbar to see if there is anything he can do with it. Hopefully I'll have a chance tonight.

yup--same here. You can just go in and add the line manually to the properties file.

Thanks Mike, that is great!
Maybe lower right hand corner?
I agree with you--especially since I think this is about the only availabe corner left!! :) I think is could be very subtle, almost transparent so that you can read it when looking for it, but it isn't distracting.

A few questions that I cant seem to find a way to fix... In example1.PNG, my first question is, can we get bigger down and up arrows (lower left)? Or isnt there enough room? Something larger than 16x16 would be a big help for those 1920x1080 desktops! :) Maybe something on the order of the playlist_up and down images which I think are about 36x36?
Kirby,
See if these work for you.
(They are 30x30, but I can make them up to 60x60 if these are still too small.)

An option like the Diskbar would be cool, and yes, transparent rules.
So, you could have it enabled all the time, like the Diskbar, or disable it, and then when you hit the info button on the Main Menu, you see the Diskbar and weather status for a few seconds...

Size is great...but something is messed up using these. Maybe because I am using the iTV theme? Ohh I see the problem, the zip only has the no-focus icons...focus icons are still tiny!
Sooooooooo, are we getting Glassy Arrows now? :D

Oops, sorry. It was late last night when I did those. I'll have a look at the focus icons as soon as I get the chance.
As far as glassy arrows go, I can certainly provide alternate colors for the ones I just posted (plus the focus icons when done), but I'm not sure what else I could do with them besides add a little transparency. I'm all ears if you have any suggestions.

No problem, I was just teasing about the glassy arrows. They arent big enough on the screen to worry about IMO. What I really want (besides the larger focus icons when you have time) are a few things in iTV (which I will post in that thread).

Does anyone else have problems with back to back recordings? For some reason I get a conflict on every back to back recording that I schedule, unless there is another free tuner. I have the padding set to 5 min on either side, and I have the issue regardless of whether standard conflict mng is enabled on not. I have the issue with both v5 and the v6beta.
Any ideas?

Is it back-to-back on the SAME channel?
Sage will not remove padding from back-to-back recordings on different channels, only on the same channel, so you will get conflicts if this is what is happening.
I have to double check sometimes, but I always find that it's between channels...

If they are on the same channel, try 'remove padding on back to back favorites'. It's under detailed setup, but I forget exactly where. When this is enabled the padding will be removed if you have two favorites scheduled to be recorded back to back on the same channel.

Just wondering if anyone is working on the music area?
I would really like to see the music area looking like the video area.
I mean you could be in folder view and have the album art displayed, click on it and get a listing of songs on the CD along with another image, some bio on the band.. etc etc..
It seems like the video area and with a some modification could be modified to handle music rather than video files and possibly no to hard to get it dialed in...
I am in the process of adding tags to all my FLAC files and would like to make use of them... and also how to use the album art I am accumulating...

There are actually two music menu's in SageMC, and it sounds like the 2nd one is the one you're looking for. Right click in the main menu and enable "My Music files" and give that a shot.
Ya-i've been using the My Music Files since v6 because the tagging messed up alot of my stuff. Hopefully the new code will make it into this version sometime along the way.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this post so if it's not just let me know.
But my problem is, SageMC i just started using Showanalyzer for the first time to skip the commericals, but MC does not seem to be reading the txt files. It seems like SA is working fine it produces the txt files and I also used it to make .vprj files and tested it with videoredo and it worked great. I searched around looking to see if there was some sort of settings I need to set but I could not find any posted in the forums.
Thanks for any help.

OK - I'll check that out when I get home....
BTW - Where do you put the album art (jpegs) or where do you specify where its at?
And, how do you name them as there are 10 files differently named for each album? This probably has something to do with how the files are named..
Something like: Artist, Album, Song....
for example: Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick - Songname
Or.... inquiring minds want to know....

Are you using a client that's on a different computer than the server? If so then you need to set up your client so that it can reach the comskip files using the same path as the server. Otherwise when the client goes to get the comskip file it won't exist.
i.e. if you recording drive is H:\SageRecordings\ on the server then you'd have to map the servers H: to the clients H:.

Ever since I upgraded to SageMC 6.13a, I've had a problem with my MVP powering-up from a warm power-down to a black / blank screen.
Once powered-on to the black / blank screen, the MVP locks up and I have to power-cycle it.
This never happens on a full boot, and only seems to have started since I upgraded to 6.13a. It happens about 10% of the time upon powering on the MVP from a previous soft power-off.
Has anybody else experienced such a problem using 6.13a?
I've also downgraded to Java 1.4, which has fixed my stuttering problems, so that may be a cause too...

Also, I just loaded up the newest Sage Beta and added back all my plugins but I have a question about the MC16x9...
Do I need to reinstall from scratch (using the installer) and work my way back up to MC6.13a, or can I just load in the sageMCbeta60 (or whatever it was called) and go from there without messing with all the prior stuff......
(After upgrading I reverted back to first Sage beta release as things started getting sketchy...when I would choose a song from My Music it would display a yellow bar at top of screen without OSD with options to Play etc.... but when pressing enter it would start playing song.... yikes...
I'll save that install for a rainy day

I have been trying to troubleshoot 2 different issues:
1. I can't get the diskbar to appear. I am using 6.0 beta, and SageMC 6.13a beta version. I have the newest sagemc.jar in the JAR directory. Java version 1.4. I have tried enabling the diskbar as well as disabling it, and hitting the option button on the main screen -- no diskbar either way.
2. The Custom1, Custom2, and Custom3 menu items configured via the SageMC 16x9 options page will not take any values in their "Menu Screen" box. I am trying to get the Google Video screen to work with any of the Custom buttons. For instance, I can make the "Custom1 Menu Name" Google Videos, however, after scrolling though all the options in the "Custom1 Menu Screen" list and choosing one, nothing happens. I have tried many different internal menu screens, and none of them show up after being selected, and the button created on my main page does nothing.
Any ideas on what my issue is?
Thanks,

As long as all the files from the initial install are still there, it is totally sufficient to just load the newest STV and then import all the customizations (you might want to have a look at my importer plugin to simplify this process)

it can't find the java classes for the dynamic menus... Do you have a net/sf/sageplugins/sagemenu folder in your SageTV directory ? If not, please extract it from the SageMC base install, or run Jason's installer again (SageTV restart required afterwards), and let me know how it works out...

And while we are on the feature request thought... I've been ripping my DVD library, and have a lot of shows that I captured in HD. Is there an easy way to separate them? Or differentiate them, when the 2 titles are sitting next to each other? If there was a way that I could assign the DVD icon or HD icon to a show (much like we assign genre's) that would be great, but I am guessing that this isnt really an easy feature...

However it looks like the diskbar was never really an issue, as it seems that it only appears when the video menu style is set to window. Is it possible that you can make it appear when the video menu style is set to background as well?

I am a recent SageMC convert and just love all the work that has gone into this! I did run across something weird and a forum search did not turn up anything.
I had the opportunity to watch a DVD from the import (My Videos) option and things went just fine until I hit play to bring up the status bar so I could check how much time was left in the movie. After I did the movie would stutter just a bit every few seconds, nothing really bad but a frame or two glitch, I gave it a couple minutes but it never stopped.
I quit the movie, started it back up but still the same thing. I switched back to the default stv/xml and all was good.
I searched around and turned off OSD animations but it did not help.
Has anyone else experienced a problem with DVD (from HD) playback using SageMC but not in the default STV?

With the latest version (6.13a on Sage 6.0.12), when I go into the My Videos section, and choose the option to play a file (not one of the library selections), the Selection box that comes up doesn't work correctly with the remote. If you hit the down arrow, the selection bar doesn't move correctly. If you say center the bar on one directory, you may actually open a directory above or below (depending on which way you move). Is there a way to get the old selector box back?

Hmm, never heard this before, and it works fine for me ... Is this just a problem with the remote, or does the same also happen with the cursor keys on the keyboard ? Which Sage commands do you have mapped to your remote control keypad ?

No, haven't seen this before. Does the same happen if you hit 'Info' instead of 'Play' ? I checked the code, and it resets the Playback rate to '1' on Play, but I couldn't see why this would introduce such side effects... If this happens again, try to cycle through the playback speed and see if it makes a difference ...

Do you have automatic .my file generation enabled ? This will create a new background thread which will periodically scan the recording directories. But that's about the only possibility I can think of ...
I checked and .my file generation was disabled. How about the weather maps? Are these downloaded when the screen is accessed or is this updated automatically in the background? Also I am using Java 1.4.2 - could this make a difference? Should I be using something newer?

With the rumors of these new touchscreen iPods coming out, supporting 480p video, I may have to break down and get one...so getting this SageTV built-in conversion working would be awesome...of course, we'll need a way to limit what time these conversions take place, if it's anything like AutoGK is when it's running!

Sage kicks off it's compressions with below normal priority, so you should be good as far as processor usage goes. You're biggest enemy is going to be HD bandwidth. Last night I was recording 2 SD shows, comskipping 2 other SD shows, and compressing another and man was my client lagging :(
geogecko
10-19-2006, 02:23 PM
LOL, wow. I could see where that would be a problem.
I've had 2 HD shows recording, one viewing, 2 SD shows recording, and all 4 being comskipped at the same time. Things still seemed to work okay, since I had SA set to throttle back...but it still is pegged at 100% (SA gives in, if someone else needs more CPU cycles). Adding compression to that, would probably kill it.
Sounds like I need to get a dual core. Are the compressions kicked off as threads, or processes? That would be nice.

No, the weather is only updated on access.
Java 1.4.2 should also be fine. Not sure what else to try, I can't really test it myself because my PC refuses to go into Standby in general for whatever reason... Anyone else having the same issue ?

Do you know what is used to determine the diskbar colors? I jacked mine up by installing another theme, and no matter what theme I install, or what STV I try, the diskbar is stuck on this weird white oval looking background.

Well, I hit info instead of play and it did the same thing, a slight stutter. I tried the cycle through speeds idea and still the same. It seems that after bringing up an OSD inside SageMC it will set off this little quirk until I stop the DVD and restart. I tried it on an actual DVD and it does the same thing. HD tv works great and does not display this type of behavior, just DVD's.
When I set it back to SageTV3 the problem goes away, but I lose all the cool stuff that SageMC has to offer.
I’m kinda out of ideas? I tried different render settings, OSD settings and so on but nothing made a difference.

Well, I have not turned on debug yet, but I did notice something that may be a clue. When I use the SageTV3 STV and bring up an OSD while playing a DVD the dvd will stutter a bit while the OSD is on top just like it does inside SageMC, but then when the OSD goes away so does the stutter.

I'll try to get some screenshots tonight, didn't have time last night. I'm currently using a MCE2005 remote with the arrow keys mapped from there to the arrows in Sage via girder. Works great with v6.12, but the .13a the browse screen looks a little different, and the arrow keys on the remote don't function correctly. I know mouse input works ok, but haven't tested keyboard input, which I'll try to take care of tonight.
The only other thing I can think of is, I'm using one of the Java 6 nightlies, but I installed that a couple weeks before this problem started.
At any rate, you can definitely tell a difference between the old browse box on the older version, and the one on the 6.13a version...
*EDIT* I attached pics of each selector. The old one is actually from around 6.10 or so, don't have a newer version on that machine. It was the same selector until I installed the 6.0.11 & 6.13a combo. I'll try the 6.13a non-6.0 specific and see if it's the same old, or new version.
*EDIT 2* I tested it with the regular 6.13a (non 6.0), and had the same effect as the one for 6.0. It's almost like it's using the same selector that Sage uses when you try to set up a video import directory, but the keys don't move correctly (and I believe it's doing the same thing with the arrow keys, but mouse navigation works fine). It also does the same thing with the Retro STV based off of this version. If I go back to any of the older versions of the STV, the selector box works fine there. Might try to go in and see if it's linked to a different selector, and if so fix it in Studio.
**EDIT 3** Looks like in the older version, a file selector called "CenteredFileBrowser", where the 6.13a is using "RightSideFileBrowser". Takes too long to edit via VNC from work, so I'll see if I can change it when I get home. Never tried to mess with stuff like that before, so anybody have an easy way to change between the 2?

In poking around, it looks like the old STV used the file browser code from StorageDeviceAdded/"Code to handle Media File Browser" and the new STV uses the code from SageMC Options/Paths. Was this an intentional change, or a by-product of maybe a 6.0 conversion?
I'll have to check (again when I get home), if the add video path selector box works from options with the remote, but I'd rather switch back to the older way of handling the selector. Tried playing with it a bit at work, but didn't get very far :).

1.) The genre icons should be in .../SageTV/STVs/SageTV3/SageMCE/GenreIcons/
If you are just using the icons that came with SageMC, then make sure that the option for fullsize genre icons is turned off in Settings > Detailed Setup > Advanced > SageMC Options. The default install does not come with any of the fullsize icons, so if selected, I think only the folders will show up.
2.) The OSD will only be transparent when using VMR9 as your video renderer.
Hope this helps.

Mike

Changing the link from RightSide to CenteredFileBrowser, brings up the old selector box, but you can't select any of the drives to drill down to the file your looking for. I have a good feeling that this change will be above my meager STV skills :).
Now that I have offline video icons enabled I notice that all my videos (offline or online) are showing the icon. Any idea what might be causing this?

I uploaded version 6.2.0 which can be downloaded here (http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=139). It is mainly a maintenance release which contains bugfixes and a few new features, but no major SagetTV6.0 beta functionality. Beginning with this release new versions of SageMC will only work with SageTV 6.0. The latest version for SageTV 5.x (6.13a) will remain available in the download section, I created a new download package for this new 6.0 branch.
Bugfixes:
- video preview on 10-day forecast
- compatibility with auto-aspect plugin
- view by artist includes composer tag
- empty watched history
- missing auto-comskip for library files
- delete show did not delete
- OSD in DVD took up whole screen
- watched bars for recent recordings did not use property setting
- file selector box issue
- numeric input in non-NTE mode not working
- currently airing shows not shown in "Other Airings"
Added functionality:
- added options dialog for "Sort By Artist' to include Artist, Album Artist, and Composer
- added "Back to Google" button in OSD
- delete skips Program Info menu on back
- auto-generation of genre icons searches now all episodes for an existing icon
- Google Search Dialog now using SageMC theme
- added all/upcoming filter for search results
- added options menu for rotating pictures (new 6.0 functionality)
- delete pictures
- added two more custom main menus
- added default STV delete dialog (configurable in SageMC settings)
- added configuration for wrapped Date/Time display
- added weather bar in Main Menu (thanks to Mike !)
- ripped out old dynamic menus code and updated to nielm's latest 5.3 version
Installation:
- shut down Sage
- unzip *all* JAR files and SageMC_169.xml
- (important): delete the folder net\sf\sageplugins\sagemenu from your Sage directory, otherwise the new dynamic menus will not work
- restart Sage

Any chance of a 13b to fix the .ts + .edl problem? :) Or have I missed a fix earlier in the thread?
I re-installed 13a tonight, and made darn sure I didn't have that errant .zip in the JAR directory... still no joy on commercial skipping: the status bar doesn't show the commercial markers when I am viewing a .ts recording. Older recordings that I made in .mpg work fine. (I only record OTA, on a Fusion5 card.)
BTW, I find recording in .ts more convenient. If I get a mangled datastream which produces a file that I can't ffw/rew, the free tool that fixes this condition only works on transport streams. Recording in .ts eliminates the conversion to .mpg step... and I need to do this once or twice a week.

Yesterday I tried to set a football game to end 30 minutes after its scheduled end. This was after the game and recording had already started. The method I used was to go into the advanced record button, set it to stop 30 minutes after, and clicked on save. However the recording stopped at the old scheduled time. does this just not work? Its not related to 6.2, because I had it in 6.13a as well. Maybe its a beta issue? Its not something I do a lot of, so I am not really sure when it stopped working (if it ever did).

Thanks for the v6.2.0 update. Like the added functionality of the stacked time display, main-menu weather, and of course the added custom menus.
I did find one bug, If I am watching a recording, the TimeBar will show normally when FF or REW'ing. However, if I hit the Info button, I would get the top menu, but not the TimeBar. After that, the TimeBar will not appear during FF or REW. I can fix it by going to the Main Menu and then back out of it. Then the TimeBar will work until the next time I hit Info.
Also, one bit of functionality that would be nice to see is some way to see existing recordings of a series while in a show listing, but not in the recordings page. Sort of like in the default STV, if you go to future or past showings, there are folder links to current recordings and past or future recordings depending if you were in future or past recordings, if that makes sense. That way, if you are in the info page for a specific show, you don't have to navigate over to Recorded TV to see if you have that show already recorded.

Well if you make it like in that pic, I'll pass.
I would rather see a removal of some info, and make others bigger. For instance, right now mine says "Rain Shower" along with the rain image. Redundant. Just use the graphic. Then you could just use a numeric display for the temp and humidity "43 F / 88%" in a nice font maybe? That would make it bigger and easier to read, yet still retain the same info.
And then, if at all possible, if you are in a severe weather alert, is there a way to put a red outline around the area, or blinking, or something? Does that functionality exist? I realize the info in the window is not constantly updated, but it would be neat if it could be done!

Yah, I think a filter option in the left menu pane would be fine. Out of the way, but accessable when needed. That is one of the minor things I still missed about the default STV.
While we are giving suggestions, in the Schedule (Show Premieres) menu, would it be possible to show if a listing there is set as a favorite? Currently, it only shows the Manual Recording icon, or the series_rec.png icon, but not the series.png icon. Since the series_rec icon will show, I can see if a show if a favorite only in the 3 days preceding the recording. Any shows later than 3 days in the future require me to actually look at the info for that show to see if it is a favorite.

As far as I know Comskip on both *.txt and *.edl is working for everyone, all prior issues were due to JAR / setup issues. Now it could be a TS specific problem (although there is no code in SageMC that does specifically assume the current file is a mpg file), but I can't debug it since I don't record in HD. You could try to generate a debug file (see first post in thread for instructions), and I'll have a look, maybe there is still a setup issue ...

If it shows [...]\\SageMC_169.stv, then you are not running the 6.13 build. You can correct this by doing the following:
- shut down Sage
- edit the line to [...]\\SageMC_169.xml
- restart Sage

I've updated to the most recent sagemc and now when I am watching a show whether recorded or imported the time bar doesn't advance the time, the indicator moves but the time stays on whatever time it was when you brought up the time bar. if I let it go away when it comes back up it will show the time of that popup and so on and so forth, everthing else works but the the time not advancing
I have some thoughts for improving the weather display. Has anyone ever seen the weather display in the HDeeTV theme for meedio? .....
Mike--the HDeeTV look is what I had in mind when I first suggested this. The icon set from the example you showed are not my favorite. I also agree that we need less informaiton on the main page. The temp and the current conditions should be enough. If I need a detailed view of the weather, I can go to the weather page. If you can enlarge the temp and make it more transparent with the current conditions icon, it should be enough. I am attaching a pic of my Meedio home page as an example.

What version of Sage are you on? Are you sure it's all recordings and not just imports? There's a bug in v6 that alot of people are having that does the same thing, but only with mpeg4 files.
Verify that you are not having a problem with the exact same recordings using the base STV. If you are, it's not related to MC.

I have a question regarding commercial skip in SageMC, it appears that when you are viewing a show in a preview window it will not skip the commercial segments.
Is this as intended or is it a bug related issue?

I downloaded 6.2.0, and noticed all backgrounds are no longer transparent. I know this stv was not designed for transparent backgrounds, but I have been using it this way for a long time. Is transparent backgrounds something that can be modified in studio easily?
I broke down and upgraded to the Sage 6.0 and then the SageMC 6.2. However, I lost all my IMDB information. I thought I had read of this happening, but I've searched and can't find a solution. Is this a known issue and is there a solution?
Also, all of my .png channel logos are now showing up with a white background in the channel guide instead of being transparent. Is this fixable?
Thanks for any help.

You mean you have been using it with the default STV, right ? Well, load v6.13a, set the 'Video Menu Options' in the Detailed Setup to "Background / Always" and see for yourself, the UI looks like crap with background video. As you already mentioned, it was never designed for this usage.

Very weird. Had to manually modify the STV in the properties file, then use the default STV to load SageMC_169.xml, and now all is well...
Is it the 31st of October yet or something???
Anyway, love the new weather bar. Very cool.

Dirk--this is in relation to having the icons set to show offline/online videos.. I have my offline folder set as an import, then a seperate DVD folder set as an import. All the movies are showing correctly but they ALL have the icons (and BTW--is the icon supposed to show the video is online or offline?). I'm having an issue starting SageTV after installing the 6.2.0a version of SageMC.
If I try to start in fullscreen, it opens up just a black screen. I can hear the cursor moving around in the background over items, but as soon as I pick any menu, it freezes, and I have to ctrl-alt-del and kill the process. The debug log shows "AWTThread Hang Detected".
Starting in a window loads as normal, and I am able to switch to fullscreen and run fine.
Another issue I'm encountering is after reaching the end of a recorded show, I receive the dialog that asks what I want to do with the file. Upon hitting Stop to go back to the main screen, SageTV freezes with the same AWTThread Hang in the debug file.

There is a separate yellow DVD icon for offline videos. I'm not sure, but your issue could have to do with having your offline folder set as an import. I think there is a separate place to specify your offline folder in the SageMC Options menu. I don't have any offline videos set up at the moment, so I'm not sure how that all works. Sorry I can't offer more help.

I wish there was a way to have a DVD icon like the offline one, for DVD rips, so its more obvious from the folder view which movies are DVD and which are HD. Guess that is probably beyond the realm of possibilities right? Maybe there could be an option to assign the HD or DVD icon added, much like the custom genre stuff was added?
I know I'm missing something simple....
Several times when I return to the home page, the weather bar is highlighted. If I select it, it takes me to the weather page, which is great. But I can't figure out how to intentionally navigate to the weather bar. What am I missing??

Not sure what you mean...
In my system, when I rip a DVD to the HD, the icon that shows up, is the online icon (which is a hard drive), when the DVD's are offline, the icon shows a DVD icon.
From what you said, that would mean that all ripped DVD's would have the offline icon (DVD icon), and all offline DVD's would have the same icon. That doesn't make since to me.

I think Kirby is requesting another icon to indicate that the video had been ripped from a DVD. It might be just as effective to add the HD icon for videos that came from HD sources. Then you would know everything else is SD. The way I read Kirby's request, separating HD from SD content seems to be the main intent. Please let me know if I'm wrong here.

Yes, sorry I wasnt clear there. HD for High Def, and a DVD icon for DVD rips. Now some of you might ask, if you have a movie in HD, why keep a DVD rip of the same? Couple of reasons:
1) Original Aspect Ratio (HBO and Starz shred OAR all the time)
2) DTS sound tracks
But I know my request is probably not a big deal for many, so its probably just a pipe dream at this point.. At least until I can figure out how to code something on my own (what year is it?).

Mine is setup with the following:
D:/MEDIA_D/DVD
D:/MEDIA_D/OFFLINE/DVD
Both as library imports, video only.
Then, I have the Offline path setup as the offline path listed above, in SageMC options.
The OFFLINE/DVD folder should be empty, initially, until SageMC fills it with the needed information (which is usually just a .jpg and a dummy .mpg file).

Yeah I figured it was a PIA like that... What if I were to get all my DVD rips and locate them in the offline DVD directory, rather than dummy mpeg files in there? How would sage react to that? Would it play them? I've never messed with the whole DVD Profiler stuff and offline DVD's so I dont know what that would do.

Ok, this explains why I couldn't find it--it doesn't work for me! When I press right for TV and Other Programs, I get the appropriate menus, of course. But when I press right for anything else, I get nothing. I'll have to trouble shoot this.
Let me ask one last time about my channel icons-is it normal for the icon backgrounds to no longer be transparent in the 6.0 versions? The icons have maintained a transparent background in the on screen mini-guide, but in the main guide, the background is now white. This sure messes up the look in my guide.

I think this is related to the iSageMC theme plugin. I have experienced the same problem, and have stopped using it (which was a BIG hassle to get back to my regular theme). Tonight, I came home, and it was locked up on the screensaver, with the dreaded spinning SageTV icon...

I just had another lockup (no iTV theme), where I was backing out from the "My TV" menu selection, to the Main Menu, and I got an overlapping, semi transparent view of both screens, then it froze.
Has something drastic changed between this version, and the previous version of the STV?
And then every time I restart I get the black screen again...

Geogecko, those are the exact same problems that I am experiencing. I have to start SageTV in windowed mode, and then maximize it. It looks like it's not an iTV theme issue, it's an issue with SageMC 6.2.0a.
I might have found a work-around for the lockup issue by enabling the "Disable popup on Stop" option in the SageMC options. I haven't had a lockup since I read this solution in the AWTThread Hang thread.
Hopefully we can find the root cause of these issues.

Nope, it's always been on. Should it be turned off for some reason?:(

Dirk
Cool, I will post a debug file soon. Thanks.

I had all these issues last night and thought I was going crazy! I finally just reset back to the default STV, erased all SageMC xml files I had, and all itv theme xml's, and started over fresh with 6.2.0a, and its been working fine now. Dont know why...

Are you guys saying that you get the lockups in 6.2.0a, but it's fine in 6.2.0 ? That would be really weird. Unless it's something with the weatherbar... Does it always happen on a screen where it is displayed ?

I wasnt getting the lockups per se, but the startup black screen of death I had (running the iTV theme). I think it was related to the weather bar though, because sometimes I could get the system to draw the sage menus, and my weatherbar would report a temp of "!! F" or "!9 F". When I got the black screen, I could eventually (after 2-3 minutes) move the cursor up or down, and things would appear. Maybe it was corruption from the iTV import too, I dont know. But after wiping out all xml's other than the SageTV3, I could reinstall and things worked.
Things that I tried that made no difference: starting in full screen vs. window mode, FSE on and off.
Could it be an issue where the weatherbar is trying to get the current weather info at startup, and its having network access issues of some sort, and delays the writing of the whole Sage menu to a point where it just gives up?
And yes, these issues were not there in 6.2.0.

I also removed the iTV STV's, and also all SageMC...xml files, and unzipped a fresh install of 6.2.0a, but still had lockup problems afterwards.
Last night, I switched back to 6.2.0 in hopes that my wife won't have to call me today while I'm at work. So far (I checked before I left this morning), everything is fine, with 6.2.0. I like the look of the new weatherbar. I don't see why the weatherbar would cause such an issue, since it exists in 6.2.0.
As far as locking up when the weatherbar is displayed...it could be. It's either locked up on the Main Menu, going to the Main Menu, or while in Sleep.
Edit.
Maybe someone needs to try 6.2.0a with the weatherbar disabled, and see if that removes the issue...

Wait a second, I never ran 6.2.0 (I think), I went right from 6.13a to 6.2.0a (I think). Heck I dont know anymore, I've got no working brain cells so I could be running BTV and not know it!

LOL, I'm going to stand by and wait for another reply... :D Hopefully, this will prove one way or another what is causing the problem...
FYI, I never experienced the BSOD (black screen of death), until after a crash. Heck, one time, it even took my sageclient.properties file with it! Here's to SageTV for doing auto-backups! :goodjob:
Just wanted to let you all know that I finally got my Offline icons working properly. I don't think i had some of the paths correctly identified so i started from scratch and all is good now. Thanks for the help.

Wow, I can't believe you guys are having so many problems. I am using 6.2.0a without a single hiccup. The weather bar works great. I am using the MCE theme and pressing right on any menu item but my TV takes me to the weather bar. Pressing it takes me to the weather, and then backing out takes me right back to the home menu. No crashes no lockups. I am using overlay with acceleration. All animations are set to disabled (I want things fast). I am also just using beta 11 not 12 if that makes any difference, and JRE 5 update 9.

Does it sound like a common denominator among all the people with the lockups is the iTV theme? At least having had it at some point? Or are some people getting lockups who've never used the iTV theme?

Since you seem to be able to reproduce this consistently, can you try the attached STV (with weather bar enabled) and see if the problem goes away ?
Thanks,

True, I could see how this could be thought of as the factor. However, I downloaded the iTV theme, before any other files that would affect the installation were in there.
When I checked the iTV theme download package, all it contained were image files, and the import file only, no JARs or anything else. I removed the import file, and redownloaded the SageMC STV (so it was fresh)...
I am on v6, but only -11, not -12.

Hey Dirk,
This new file does not fix the problem. It works fine with the weather bar disabled, but upon enabling it, I get a black screen every time when starting in full screen. CPU is pegged out at 100%. Starting in windowed mode and switching to full screen works just fine.

Has anyone checked their log files to see what's happening when you get either a lockup of the black screen of death? Maybe if a few of you could post the revelent snippets, we might be able to get a handle on what's happening.

I also noticed, that sounds have come back when installing 6.2.0. They don't appear to work anymore in the -a version.

Sage does not actually lock up when I try and load it fullscreen with the weather bar enabled. The screen is entirely black, however if I move my mouse around, I can hear the selection changing on the buttons on the main menu. So, the screen is blank, however the buttons are there. Clicking the mouse button anywhere on the screen produces a lockup, which in the log file is an AWTThread Hang.
The lockup that happens when I get the overlapping menus is also reported as a bunch of AWTThread Hangs in the log file. This one is not as easy for me to reproduce, as it has not happened since enabling the "disable stop menu popup" option.
I can post a log file of the black screen lockup, but I'm not sure if it would really help, since the lockup doesn't occur until clicking the mouse button. Let me know.

Hi Carl,
just so I know where to dig : does version 6.2.0 (with weather bar enabled) exhibit the same issue on your system ?

A lot of the issues were caused by an incorrect download package where sagemc.jar was named sagemc.zip. Did you check if you have a sagemc.zip in your JARs directory ? If so, rename it to sagemc.jar, and restart SageMC.
Dirk
Hi Dirk,
"My Menu" (menu.xml) stopped working in 6.20a. I didn't find the sagemc.zip. Nor did I find any other messages regarding this.
The custom menu is displayed and the options can be highlighted, but nothing is started or displayed when selected. If I'm switching back to the 6.13a xml (for SageTV 6.11/6.12), everything is working fine.
Any ideas?

Hi Art,
did you follow these instructions ?
- shut down Sage
- unzip *all* JAR files and SageMC_169.xml
- (important): delete the folder net\sf\sageplugins\sagemenu from your Sage directory, otherwise the new dynamic menus will not work
- restart Sage

Well the only idea I have left to locate the issue is to remove parts of the weather display code piece by piece until the problem goes away. If you want to try this, send me your email address per PM, and I'll send you the STVs to try.

With all of these AWT (Absract Window Toolkit) Thread hangs involved, I've got to wonder if this is related to the java version. Maybe we are somehow exposing a bug/feature/quirk? To everyone who is having balck screen and/or hanging problems, what JRE version are you running? Also, are the AWT Thread hangs the only indication of something wrong in the logs?

I am also seeing the problem but mine will load if you give it about 6 seconds. I am using the iTV theme and having Sage startup in Fullscreen. Here is my log. All I did was start SageTV and once the interface loaded (after about 6 seconds) I shut it down. I was using SageMC 6.2.0 when I imported and changed the theme to iTV then I upgraded to 6.2.0a and iTV was already my theme so I didnt import it again.
Theme - iTV (not the latest)
FSE - no
Java - 1.4.2_12
SageMC - 6.2.0a
Imports - Sleeptimer

Hope this helps.

Hi Miller,
thanks for the log, but I don't see anything wrong with it, nothing seems to be hanging ...

Yeah mine's not a big deal as it does load, I normally dont load it up in FS, just thought I would try it too see if I was seeing the same results. Other than that everything is great just got thru linking up the google videos :) Great work.

Edit: Oh yeah I almost forgot, just got my first Media Extender in da mail today.:jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: Installation couldnt have been any easier. And I love it, there is a very small delay when changing screens but it is very minimal. One thing I was disappointed with was I bought it from Sage mainly because I wanted one that was branded with the SageTV logo etc... :( but oh well it was cheaper from Sage too I believe than what it would have cost me at pcalchemy + the license.

Mine would never recover...well, I know I waited more than 6 seconds.
I'm using Java 1.6.0-rc99.

Ok. I was able to reproduce the blackscreen/lockup problems. I think I've found the culprit. Please try the attached SageMC xml file and let me know how it goes. Thanks.
The only change is the temperature font size. I reduced it from 200 to 48 and the problems went away. They return if I increase the font size back up slightly (I tested 52). It seems that the black screen / hang occurs when sage has to scale the font down to fit the frame.

Hey, I just got it to happen too! Probably a different case then everybody else.
It was sluggish starting up, then I got a black screen, and then after abouta minute I was able to hear sluggish clicking when moving the cursor up and down. When I went to kill it with task manager, I found that acrobat was taking up 99% processor. Maybe something to think about if you might have something busy in the background processing files when Sage is started...

Yeah, I suspected the same, was waiting for a final test confirmation from Carl... It's just weird that it only happens in some environments. Maybe it has to do with the fonts used and installed on your system ? I personally use Trebuchet for most of my Sage fonts (and could never reproduce the problem), I'll check if it makes a difference changing it to Arial when I get home ...
BTW: what are you doing up so late ?!? ;)

The fonts are defined in several places in the properties file. Scan down the file until you find the first font definition to see what you are currently using. Then you can do a search and replace to change to Arial.

I tried changing the font and it didn't make any difference. Interestingly, switching 3D accelleration on and off seems to have an effect, but I haven't fully characterized it yet. I'll have to do some more testing when I have more time.
Aloha,
Mike
Edit: I might have jumped the gun on the fonts. Last night, the test xml file I posted worked using Arial with 3D accel. on. This morning, it did not work using the Trebuchet MS font. But if I turn off 3D accel., then it works again (still using Trebuchet). This is going to take a little time to sort out.

I do have 3d accel on. I can try it with it off later, when no one is using it.

I'm really new at customizing Sage, but this week I installed SageMC on top of v6 beta and was pleasantly surprised. Job well done.
So, I'm poking around both here on the forum and in the settings menu trying to get Google video back on my main menu, got as far as setting Custom Menu 1 to Google menu item, but didn't see it on the main menu...so I ran across something like "enable Nielm's dynamic menu" - thought I would try that. When I got back to the main menu I had "cannot find <some Java class>"..and I was absolutely stuck. I could exit sage (thankfully), but not much else. I've always felt like poking around in settings within Sage was a relatively safe thing to do (meaning all actions can be undone), but I was shocked that I could hose myself up so much (a possibility I definitely am aware of when I'm downloading stuff and unzipping stuff on top of my Sage installation). But to set a setting within the UI and then have the whole menu system hosed?? Seems like this needs a "Warning - you better know what you are doing" type of thing.
So, I knew I had never installed the nielm dynamic menus...so I found a link off of the wiki and attempted to install (which, very scary, seemed to overwrite a Sage .dtd menu file...and I had no idea if this stuff was v6 or MC compatible). Ran Sage and got more (and different) errors on the main page - recommending I go back to the original Sage STV, but...I don't know how to do that if I can't get off the main menu.
Wondering if I am totally hosed now, or is there someway to get me out of this hole? If I reinstall everything (Sage v6 beta, MC stuff, etc.) and I tell sage where to store tv recordings (i.e. where I currently have 100 GB of programs), will it recoup the programs that are already there, or will I lose them all?

Shut down Sage all together, and open sage.properties in a text editor. Find the entry about nielm's dynamic menu (search for dynamic) and change it from true to false. Save and start Sage. That should get you back where you were before.
Then, on the main menu, either hit ESC or your "Options" button on your remote, scroll down to Custom 1, and enable it, scroll down to refresh menu, and then ESC or Options out again, and you should be set with your Google video.
MeInMaui

Ok. Take a deep breath. Shut down sage completely and open your sage.properties file (or sageclient.properties if you use the service) in the SageTV folder.
Find and change the following property:
mlbdude/dynamic_main_menu=false
Now look a few lines down from the top and find where the STV to be used is defined (it will be an XML file). Change the file name back to sagemc_169.xml. Save and start up sage. Everything should be back.
To place the google videos item on the main menu, assign it to Custom 1 (sounds like you already did) and rename Custom 1 to whatever you want (in SageMC Options under settings > Detailed Setup > Advanced Settings). Now go to the main menu and bring up the options menu (right click or esc). Scroll to Custom 1 and enable. Now exit the options menu. That should do it. Good luck!

Mike

Glad you got it working.
My HTPC is out of commision now. I pulled my FusionHDTV card to replace it with a FusionHDTV USB, and upon trying to reboot, it won't even POST now. I've been at it for almost 3 hours, and I'm giving up...this happened once before, but after enough power cycles, the board finally started working again...not this time though.
If ASUS doesn't come through with a new motherboard...I doubt I will get it fixed. I'm just tired of jacking around with the thing. Almost every other week it's something.
Sorry to rant, I'm just ticked off...

I had almost the exact same problem with two separate computers. It turned out to be the power supply in both cases, even though at first it looked like a motherboard problem. It would start when I jumpered the start pin manually, but wouldn't when plugged into the motherboard (except once after power cycling about 20 times). If you have another PS available, give it a try. I can fill in more details via PM if you want.

I had major issues with my HTPC as some of you might know, for the past few months. Finally ended up finding a bad DRAM. New memory installed and everything (XP, Sage 6.0.12, SageMC 6.2.0a and iTV 0.21) is running great. Given the headaches that I went through, I'm sorry to say I wont be testing anything else for a week or two! :) (Other than the new R5000 capture software that I am testing, and possibly another new tuner setup). Its just so refreshing to come home, start up the HT and see the Sage GUI still on the screen!!! Its a thing of beauty (spooky beauty with the Halloween graphics!)

I've had more trouble with the HTPC computer, than with three other computers I've built.
I'm not positive, but I am still leaning towards the MB. I may go ahead and replace the PSU anyway, since I've grown to NOT be so fond of it (Antec Phantom 350), the thing just gets really hot.
Fry's only carries the Seasonic S12-650 or the M12-700, not really my best choices for a system that consumes less than 200W, nor the least expensive... It's either one of those, or waiting 3 days to get something online...maybe I can just do without my other PC for a few days...
Sorry for the thread hijack. I'll keep to myself from now on, anyone got any comments, just send me a PM.

You know.... one thing I haven't figured out is why, when, using My Music, I can't seem to load up the Queue with songs....
I highlite a song, press Add To Queue, it says, Added To Queue (and you have to click to close popup) but when you check the Queue, it only has the song that is currently playing listed and once the song finishes, that's it....
Also, I can't seem to figure how to get an entire album to play all the songs top to bottom... it plays the first song and that's it.
Just another hurdle..

Usually, if I go to album view, or artist view (then view the albums by that artist), all I have to do is click the "Play" button on the left, with the entire album songs listed at the right. If you go into the actual song, and then click play, it will only play that song, but if you remain in the album, with all songs showing, it will play the entire album.

I was checking out the compression features in the default STV. One thing I noticed that was lacking, was a way to schedule them in the "Series Settings." It seems only natural that you might want to always compress some shows, for instance, on an iPod or something. Another nice feature, might be to have all those go to a dedicated folder, so that some other program could load them into iTunes, and have them ready to go when you sync your iPod next...not that I even have a video iPod...just seems like were the feature needs to grow. Would the STV be able to handle that?
I can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve next...

I've been fighting slow menus and stuttery video for the past week or so. I finally decided it was time for a total reinstall so I went back to the default STV and wrote down all of my settings for my tuners, import directories etc. While in the default STV I thought I'd look around (hadn't even looked at the v6 STV yet). Surprisingly the menus were lightning fast and video played back perfectly. If I go back to the v6.2.0a SageMC STV, menus are slow, I keep getting the spinning Sage logo, and video playback is spotty. Has anyone had this issue? I have grown to love SageMC but right now it has become unusable. I'm hoping a reinstall of Sage from scratch will help it along.
geogecko
10-28-2006, 07:41 AM
On that system, it should always be lightning fast. I think it has a lot to do with Java. I've had SageMC be really fast at times, and really slow. Right now, it's in one of those slow ruts, where I get the spinning icon fairly often. I'm using Java 1.6.0 with the b99 snapshot.
Every once in a while, I'll play around with the version of Java, just haven't had time recently.
What source has the stuttering video? All of them, or just one in particular? It may not be a factor for all, but when one of my FusionHDTV5 Lite PCI cards was sharing the same IRQ with the video card, it stuttered frequently, both audio and video. Once I moved things around (the PVR-500 didn't seem to mind being on the same IRQ as the VGA card), it was fixed. You can find out in Device Manager, switch to Resources by Type view, and then look at IRQ's.

I also use java 1.6.0 latest snapshot which seems to be slightly faster than 1.4, but it also runs on java 1.4 just fine ...
One thing to try would be to increase the maximum java heap size for Sage in the registry. If you feel comfortable enough to do this, change
HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Frey Technologies/SageTV/JVMMaxHeapSizeMB to 256 or 512 decimal (512 should be fine if you have 2GB main memory)

Hi matrix35,
I doubt it will be "soon" (development going slower these days), but it is definetly something which will be added to SageMC along the way. I've heard that 2-pass encoding will be added to the new upcoming beta, so I definetly won't look at this before that, too much could get changed again. Also, there is an 'alternative' compression project from a well known dev in progress which probably will be much better than the Sage Core stuff, we'll see ...

I believe the standard heap size in Sage is set to 128MB. With 1GB a heap size of 256MB should be no problem (that's what I did on my machine)
