SageTV Question

Is it possible to watch a DVD or, play a game on my HTPC while SageTV is recording a program? If so, is there a way to mute the sound? And, if I mute the sound, will the recording still have sound on playback? What is the best approach for this?

Actually that's what SageTV was designed to accomodate. This is what the "Sleep" mode is for that's accessible from the Main Menu. When you are not using SageTV you should put it into Sleep mode which minimizes SageTV and puts it in the system taskbar. From there SageTV is still running so it can record video on an ongoing basis. Then you don't have to worry about mute and the application will use minimal resources because it's using the power of the card to record/encode the video so you are free to use your PC for whatever you need.

We designed SageTV to be an "Always On" type of application that runs 24 hrs a day. This way you never miss a recording and if you take advantage of the Intelligent Recording capabilities, it will record other shows that may be of interest to you throughout the day.

Frank, absolutely! I've been doing that very thing now for quite a while. On my 1 ghz celeron system, SageTV was happily recording away while in sleep mode, taking about 2% of my cpu. I've recorded HD, watched dvds, played games, browsed email and web all with SageTV recording. Never a glitch! :)

With my PC, I often play heavily graphic (CPU) intensive games (Splinter Cell, C&C Generals, Grand Theft Auto III, etc.) while Sage is recording. Like Mark says, I have yet to see it have a problem with this...

The only thing I noticed was that the Sage application would close upon exiting the game occassionally. Jeff said this was due to Java, and it has not happened since upgrading to the latest Java release...
