Argh! How long does this take?

Ok, I have tried:
Gentoo 2006.1
Gentoo 2006.0
download.sagetv.com/linuxweb/installprofile.xml
download.sage.tv/linuxbeta/installprofile.xml

I tried setting the swap to format and to not.

I have tried every combination of the above.

I get no errors on install

In every case, the install stops at 'Beginning Kernel Compile'
I gave up last night and went to bed. When I came down in the morning, it was at the exact same spot....

I have a P4, 1024MB RAM, 2.4GHz, 40GB HDD

Am I doing something wrong?
I assumed that it shouldn't take 5+ hours, but could it?

any ideas?

Ok. I finally got it to install after using 2006.0 and formatting all 3 partitions and it only took about an hour! So something was definitely wrong last night.

It went through the entire setup and I coughed up the money to get the license so I could continue the setup and when I rebooted, I got a "Fatal IO Error 104" right at the end of the boot when it tried to launch X!

So, I am a little annoyed that I had to pay for the product before I could even verify that it would install correctly, but I am mostly just tired at how much time I've spent trying to get this . . . well, installed. I haven't even gotten to a point where it may or may not run.

what can I do?

I redid the sagesetup.sh and reentered the 500-digit key (really, if the key is required for install, then I should be able to purchase it from the install - that avoids having to run back and forth between PCs with a pen and paper) and through the entire process again and ended up with the same fatal error.

any ideas at all?

memtest. just a thought but there might be something wrong with your ram. even if its brand new. google memtest86 and run a scan all the way through atleast the first pass. - my install took about 4 hours. running PIII 1Ghz.

Use Gentoo 2006.0 I heard people were having trouble with Gentoo 2006.1
and use only one install profile - you prolly were, but just incase you weren't

I can run the memtest from the web browser after booting with the Gentoo live CD, right?

I'm going to try one more time tonight with a fresh install of 2006.0 and v5.

Also, any idea what kind of text editor I can use with the install? After installing the sage and having the X crap out, I was still able to log in as root, but I couldn't find vi, vim, edit or anything to edit text files. Any suggestions?

You could try emacs, or maybe nano

If neither of those work, if you have net access, you could try emerge vim

I don't know, I haven't tried the linux version with success and have hardly any knowledge of gentoo.

yeah, nano was the one that was installed. I am still having the same problem. I'm going to have to contact the sage support for this.

In the meantime, I need to clear out my bad 250GB drive onto my new 400GB drive in a Linux box, so I am installing Ubuntu and at the very least, I will continue to run the server on the XP box, but store the video lib on the smb share.

Once I get that going, I'll try to install the Sage server onto the ubuntu box and skip the Gentoo stuff altogether.

Oh, the Ubuntu liveCD had memtest86, so I ran that without issues.
