View Full Version : New to sage - Having service problem.

I am new to sageTV. I am doing a bit of a trial run here to see if it will work for a whole house solution once my home's construction is complete. I am doing this trial run on the mac (non of my servers -linux or bsd are unpacked).
I borrowed a friends Hauppauge WinTV 950 Hybrid Stick. I have it connected to cable.
I have installed the latest SageTV for mac trial 6.5.9
The Mac is a mac mini 2 Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2GB of Ram.
Installation seemed to go smoothly, I setup for cable do a channel scan, etc.
When I go to "Watch Live TV", it tunes to a low channel number - 38 which I cannot change. About one second later it will turn the screen blue and display the following message:
"The connection to the SageTV Service has been lost. The connection will be reestablished once the SageTV service restarts."
It then alternates between that screen and the landing screen where you can select which operation you want "Watch Live TV", "Sage Recordings", etc.
Any advice on where to start looking and how to correct this?
I did a forum search and found nothing on this, maybe my search terms were poor?
Either way, any advice would be appreciated. I am just dipping my toes in the water here, but if everything works well I can see myself replacing my TiVos with this more scalable solution.
Thanks!

I followed the system.log while starting up SageTV. After it starts all is fine until I go to "Watch Live TV". The following snippet is from after requesting live TV.

I am doing this trial run on the mac (non of my servers -linux or bsd are unpacked).
Might this be your issue:
Supported Analog TV Tuners with Hardware Encoding:
Mac
Hauppauge EskapeLabs myTV.PVR
Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 (use the EskapeLabs drivers)
Supported OTA HDTV Tuners (requres SageTV V5 or later):
Mac
Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950
Pinnacle PCTV HD (800e)
Silicon Dust HDHomeRun (native support, no driver install required)
El Gato EyeTV Hybrid (original version w/out QAM tuner)
Looks like the 950 (for Mac, with Sage) doesn't support the analog cable you're feeding it.

Looks like the 950 (for Mac, with Sage) doesn't support the analog cable you're feeding it.
But it should pick up local clear QAM HD channels, no?
Besides, it doesn't explain why his client actually lost connection to the sageTV service.
I would send the log to tech support (http://www.sagetv.com/request.html) and see if they can help you out.

Switching to OTA fixed the problem. Sadly, I can only seem to tune in 3 channels which makes it hard to test.
I also tried (very briefly) sage placeshifter - and I could connect from my local network - but nothing would show up. Granted it was over wireless, but my slingbox worked well over wireless.
I need to play with this some more, but my first exposure hasn't been great. To be honest, if analog cable wasn't supported in sage for that adapter, I would have preferred the choice be "greyed out" rather than a mysterious error later.

I don't have or know anything about the 950 tuner, but I've been working through the Mac side for a bit now. Perhaps some of this info will be helpful.
First, I noticed in one post, that you said you were working over wireless? Just in case that's your only method to connect, make sure you set your quality down to 'Fair'. I only have wireless (currently), so all my testing has been over wireless. I did not achieve any success, until setting my Quality down to ''Fair". Once I set my quality down, I was able to stream wirelessly to the client OK. At that stage, I had a Mac Server and a PC Client.
Also, on the Mac side, you said you were using 6.5.9. I would install the 6.5.11 beta. There were audio/video sync problems with all the releases on Mac prior to 6.5.11. It is not perfect yet, but it is watchable for me.
Right now, I have:
Mac Server 6.5.11 (on a Mac Pro, that is my everyday use machine)
Mac Client 6.5.11 (also currently on the Mac Pro)
PC Client 6.5.11 (on a PC in another room hooked to a TV, wireless only)
DirecTV HD
HD-PVR
My Quality is set to 'Fair'
My DirecTV box is hard set to 720p output (1080i doesn't work)
I can watch either the Mac Client, or the Mac Server, in Window mode
I can watch the PC Client in full screen
mplayer on Mac still seems to have some performance issues, which is preventing me from watching in full screen mode, or at higher quality. I have reported this via a bug report.
