View Full Version : Multi Tuner Confusion
05-03-2003, 10:45 PM
I have tested SageTV 1.2.8 and the 1.3.2 Beta with 2 tuner and 3 tuner configurations. Using 3 tuners with either version is akward. If I record with 2 of the 3 installed tuners, every time I try to view a channel that is not being recorded I get messages telling me what program is being recorded on each of the first 2 tuners, and asking if I want to stop recording and tune the the requested channel.
If I answer "No" to the question about stopping the recording, I am able to view the channel with the 3rd tuner.
I think the 2 tuners being used to record should be ignored and I should be able to tune to the 3rd channel with the 3rd tuner, without being prompted.
Anybody know if this is by design, or a bug?
This does not happen when I have only 2 tuners installed.
I have 2 WinTV PVR 250 tuners and 1 Creative DVCR.
Agreed - one would hope the first Tuner selected by SageTV is one not currently recording anything... With my 2 Tuners, I had assumed SageTV was doing this. The only time I get these messages is if Both my 2 Tuners are currently recording and I attempt to Watch a Different Live Channel. Thus, I'm surprised you are seeing this - but then again I'm only running w/ 2 Tuners...
Perhaps the reason my 2 Tuners behave as you would hope is because both have the same "Merit". I'll bet your PVR-250s have Higher Merit than the Creative DVCR. Hence, SageTV is giving you the opportunity to Watch with the Highest Merit Tuner. One can probably adjust the Merit of each to make them all the same and get your desired behavior I suppose. One easy way to validate my "guess" would be to go back to 2 Tuners but make sure one of those is the Creative DVCR - I have a sneaking suspicion that when you were running w/ 2 Tuners and seeing desired behavior that you were using the 2 PVR-250s...

The encoder_merit is set to 0 for each in the properties file. I assume this is the merit setting mentioned? You are correct about the 3rd tuner being the Creative card. When I ran the 2 WinTV cards I had no problem; with one recording the other was used to view different channels.

I went back to two WinTV tuners and everything is working fine. Anybody know if this problem happens whenever more than 2 tuners are installed, or did it happen because not all the tuners were the same model?

This problem shouldn't happen with 1.3.2. If it does, please send the sagetv_0.txt log file to email@example.com so I can look at it.

This problem did happen with 1.3.2 beta. At some point I copied over the "fixed" MpegMux.ax to resolve the Creative A/V sync issues. Not sure if I had the multi tuner problem both before and after replacing MpegMux.ax.
I have removed the Creative card and don't plan to reinstall it. If I add a third, perhaps forth PVR 250 should I be able to avoid this problem?

I can make the problem go away if you put the Creative card back in. :)
This shouldn't be happening, and the log file will tell me why, and then I'll fix it. :) I don't think the problem has anything to do with what kind of card you have or the MpegMux file. The portion of the software that deals with scheduling conflicts is completely independent of that stuff. I'm not sure what the problem is yet, but I can't reproduce it on my 3 or 4 tuner configuration. But your log files will tell me what I need to know. :)
Thanks for your feedback

I put the card back in and the problem is back. I sent you what I think is the log file you requested.

Slightly off topic, but along the same line...
I have a 3 card configuration ( 4 if I could get my Winfast tv2000 XP card to work with sage).
1 - PVR 250
My present problem seems to be that When I try to use my EPIA M9000 client to access live tv, etc, it grabs any available card. In normal circumstances, this would be great.
BUT, I havent had any luck with decoders on the EPIA. The only one that seems to work is the Hauppauge intervideo w/ the reg hacks. 33% chance of getting this card on my EPIA client . The DVCR cards dont work with this decoder..sigh.
BTW, whats the best decoders for the creative cards?
Is there a way to specify which card uses which decoder? If not, is there a way to specify which client would grab(reserve) which card?
Im kinda running out of ideas, and would love any input or ideas :)
