Hi Y'all,

I need some help with a change that's soon to be coming....

Currently, we are recording HD from OTA using an antenna (in the Los Angeles market) onto a PC with 3 tuner cards; a Pinnacle 800i, Hauppauge 1600 and a Hauppauge 2250. Mid February we will be moving down to San Diego County, and may have to switch to cable (not sure if we will be able to get OTA there or not). How will I need to set up recording from cable? Will I be able to record multiple shows from 1 cable? I assume we will need a set top box for HD, will I need multiple boxes to record multiple channels?

Any help that you can give will be greatly appreciated....

Robert

It will really depend on the cable co that you end up with. They may offer mots the locals (which is all you are currently getting anyways) in the clear via QAM on the cable. It that's the case, you can still use those cards to receive it. Unfortunately, yo umay not know for sure what is available until you try it out. SiliconDust does have a channel list on their website, so if you know your zip and future cable carrier, you may be able to get some idea of what's available.

If you can't get what you want via QAM, then your only option for HD is using a STB with HD-PVR, Firewire (if unlocked by the provider) or an R-5000 modification.

Once you know your address, you should be able to check AntennaWeb.org to see what kind of OTA reception you can expect there. I'd stick to OTA if you can, it is far better qality than the often times recompressed QAM cable feeds, and in most cases, much easier to set up.
