Anyone know how to playback hd dvd's on an hd-200? I haven't had any luck finding info on it through search.

Rip them to a Blu-ray Structure with Clown_BD or eac3to+tsmuxer.

Since it was the losing format I doubt that it will play them. Your best bet is to convert the movie itself to an m2ts or mkv file. You can do this losslessly with a program like MakeMKV if you have HD-DVD drive on your computer.

Ah ok I'll try that.

@Tadd
Don't rub it in :P I can't stand the bluray format. I hate how the bluray format keeps "evolving". Some see it as a bonus, I find it an annoyance that you have to keep upgrading your hardware at their whim. Plus they are much more expensive than hddvds were. Ah well, just have to live with it now unfortunately.

It's mainly the DRM that evolves. Had HD-DVD won you can't say for certain that a similar thing wouldn't have happened with its DRM. Even DVD evolves slightly to try and thwart pirates. Besides that, as similar as they are BD is the technologically superior format. HD-DVD is 15 and 30GB for single and dual-layer while BD is 25 and 50GB respectively. That extra space allows for more content flexibility. Allows for higher quality audio and video.

I don't know, I've got a Profile 1.1 player ("BonusView") and I've had no reason to upgrade. I think I've done two firmware updates in the couple of years I've had it. If you don't care about stuff like BD-Live then there's really no reason to upgrade. Yes Profile 2 should have been in the spec from the beginning, but it's out now so I don't see much changing.

And I'm not seeing that they're "much more expensive" than HD DVDs. I seem to pay about the same, just over $20/movie. FWIW, was an HD DVD "supporter", I think BD was half baked when it was released. But I've had better luck with BD via netflix than HD DVD, plus with the higher capacity, I think we're probably actually better off with BD.

So far I haven't gotten this to work. I am running Clown bd on Vista 64 and it seems to run fine but crashes whenever I come back to it. Unfortunately I deleted the runs because I needed the space but there was nothing evident in the logs that I could tell. I'll run it again tonight and post the logs.

What should the output when ripping them to a bluray structure look like?

You should get a BDMV folder with STREAM and PLST (and probably a few other) subfolders. I'm not sure if I've actually used just Clown_BD personally or not. I know I've done it manually with eac3to and tsmuxer.

I have one running now at home, I'll check it when I get home from work. I'm not exactly sure where it is failing.

So it crashed again but created the directories that you mentioned. I copied the directories to my WHS and re-imported the media in Sage.

The ripped disc showed up in the videos section and I was able to play it. I then fast forwarded to near the end of the movie to make sure the audio was synched properly.

I then proceeded to watch the last 10 minutes or so to see if everything was fine. This is where the video froze and caused all kind of wackiness with sage. The time played showed it was at 2 hours 45 minutes and its not that long of a movie and all kinds of other strange things. I am guessing that the rip was working fine up to a point and this point at the end is where it died.

I am using Vista 64 with clown bd. Should I try running the rip in xp instead? Any ideas what could cause it to die? There were about 6 or 7 log files when I checked it when I got home, all seemed to be successful runs of whatever was being logged.

So I tried watching the m2ts file output by clown bd with VLC Media Player and it played properly. This makes me think that maybe there is either a) a problem with the sage playback or b) the bluray structure built by clown bd was malformed in some way.

I have had the exact problems you describe trying to convert my HD DVDs to use with sage. I never got it to work properly, and would love any advice from the gurus.
