How does current version of Sage\HD-PVR handle resolution changes in video recordings if STB is not set to a defined resolution?
1. Does it record the whole thing as the initial resolution?
2. Does it switch resolution in the recording as it happens?
3. Does it crash the HD-PVR?
4. Create a corrupt recording?

1) The HD-PVR will record whatever resolution is presented to it.
2) You will want to put in a 3 second delay parameter from when Sage tunes the channel to when it "activates" the HD-PVR to allow the resolution of the STB output to stablize.
3) If the resolution changes during program (like for crappy commercials) it likely "crash" the HDPVR. I say likely because I simple dissallow the STB to output 480i and that seems to solve the problem of crappy commercials.
4) Corrupt isn't really the right term. I think sage will now attempt to restart the recording after the resolution change causese the HD-PVR to bork.
Good luck...

How do you put in a 3 second delay?

I've had resolution the change once or twice before I locked my STBs output and every time it happened the recording was just fubar. It didn't crash the HDPVR though.

set
mmc/encoders/{tuner_ID}/delay_to_wait_after_tuning=3000
in your sage.properties
The value is in milliseconds. 1s=1000ms

I've had frequent resolution changes, and didn't run into problems with it as long as I stay within Sage. Even though I've set the delay to ~2.5 s the recording starts in the lower resolution (just a few frames), and then switches (I've decided to use 2.5s, since that's fine for channel changes between the same resolution).
The hdpvr does not crash, it simply stops and restarts. The recording itself gets represented in the start resolution by tools like e.g. mediainfo. Sage (and also WMP) playback is perfectly fine and can handle the resolution switch. The recording is played correctly.
But there are some applications that can't handle this, e.g. trying to playback such a file in MPC (which typically handles everything), doesn't work. This also applies, if you're planning to post process/cut/convert these files. Some apps might not handle these files and crash.
