View Full Version : What is BMT?

It seems everyone is on board with the BMT. What is it? How do I install it? What will it do? How do I configure it?
I've looked in this forum, but it seems everyone already knows this but I can't find it anywhere:bang:. I'm sure it is right under my nose.
Btw, I'm on SageTV v7 on Intel Quad 2.5 ghz running Windows 7.

Metadata Tools (aka BMT) is a collection of tools for managing and fetching metadata from places like www.imdb.com, www.themoviedb.com, www.tvdb.com DVDProfiler & MyMovies
BMT also provides a Web UI interface for configuration and managing metadata. With SageTV 7 you can install it right from the SageTV 7 plugin manager. It's an awesome tool, but documentation for the new version does seem to be a bit scattered unless I'm missing it.
I need to write up a little demo blog post to show off BMT. Many people don't realize how great it is - some don't even know it exists...

I also have no idea how to use BMT after installing it and I hear it is one of the most powerful and useful tools for Sage 7. So I would really like to see a detailed review on how to install and use it properly.

I'm going to start it off with baby steps:
1. What is BMT - what does it do, why is it good, why do you want/need it
2. How to install from the SageTV 7 plugin manager - how to configure basic settings in the SageTV UI
3. The BMT Web UI - basic setup, how to use the basics of the web UI
4. Getting metadata using BMT
What else? Are there questions I need to address here beyond the above? Do I have the right order?

I think somewhere in there you need to help people with naming conventions for their filenames. Best practices to ensure best results. For example, using SxxExx in the filename, adding the year etc.

Installing BMT is really easy in v7 and the plugin manager. Once installed all you have to do is navigate to:
http://localhost:8080/bmt
username - password
sage - frey
That will get you up and running in no time. Just remember to backup your wiz.bin file as BMT is manipulating it.

This would be a great start Brent. I'm another SageTV user who has never understood BMT. Maybe it's because I only use Sage to record TV. I don't have imported DVD's or other movies. Is it only used for imported movies? Is there any reason to use it with recorded TV shows?
I did try to use BMT with the Hulu importer plugin but the TV show descriptions were not the full episode descriptions that are displayed from Hulu. It was a simple generic description that was the same for each episode. I gave up and uninstalled BMT and the Hulu importer.

I'm at this point and now have no idea how to proceed.
I just poked around and figured things out.
One item I was interested in was the Fan Art, so I clicked on Configure -> Phoenix (in the left column) and then Fan Art. I clicked the Check Box to Enable Fan Art and set a network path to the Fanart folder.
Then I clicked on "Browse" and from there you zip around your media collection. I went to Sage Video Imports where it brought up my Video folders.
Click on a folder to see what's inside.
Once inside, click on an item.
Click on it again and you'll see the metadata attached to the item (if any). It might be all empty or it may already be populated for you.
If Empty--
Click on the Find Metadata button. Click search. See if you get any results. If not, tinker with the title, year, etc. and search through the various meta data providers (imdb, etc).
When you get a match, don't forget to click on the SAVE button before you go looking at other stuff.
That's how I've been using it, seems to work great!
You can also try to scour an entire folder's contents... just click the find metadata button at the top when in a folder with many folders and it'll work its way through everything.
Watch the lower left column for results.
That should get you started. There's plenty of other things it can do but tinker with that stuff and you most likely will figure out the rest on your own.

I'd just dive in. That's what I did, I'm slowly getting it figured out.
IIR, on fresh install, and before first use it's best to restart the entire server. Then log into BMT and start to browse your media. Missing metadata view is good place to start...
I'm not the person to ask about BMT, I'm a complete noob with it. I only just started getting it to behave well for me. I mostly have been using it to add imported media/tv dvd's into my recordings so that I have complete seasons with metadata/fanart.
Good luck!

It's sad really, how out of touch I am with the struggles that people have with BMT. I've never written a guide for bmt, because, in my mind, I felt it was already too easy to use :( Whenever I think about writing a guide, I can't write it because it ends up sounding silly to me.
I think that the best people to write documentation for bmt are the users, since I really can't do it justice.
I realize, after seeing so many comments, that bmt really is hard to use, but i can't see any way to make it easier, than it already is. I read a comment on the forums today about a user that installed it but couldn't figure out how to use it to edit a title, so they uninstalled it :( how can that be. How could I possibly document how to edit metadata? My documentation always ends up the same way... "Click browse, click a view, click a video, and edit away, then save".
Maybe Brent can make sense of this complicated mess.

And here I thought everyone just really liked that sandwich from Subway?
Just kidding... :)
Graywolf,
1. I think the first "Baby Steps" item is a great one. What is it good for, what can you do with BMT? From the perspective of a real-world use, I mean. I installed it months ago, and tried to use it for a specific purpose (can't remember what now), but if my memory serves me right, I couldn't get it to do what I intended, so I've just left it there...
2. A screenshot or three should be all that's needed for an install guide.
Anything after this I can't comment much on, as I couldn't get BMT to do very much...

BMT may not be hard to use, I'm not really sure. This is my personal experience with BMT. I tried the Hulu importer to add Hulu shows directly within Sage. I think they were imported in the "Video" menu. This worked, but I didn't have any descriptions for the imported episodes. I couldn't tell one episode from another. Someone said that I needed to use BMT in order to see the episode descriptions. I installed BMT and a generic description was added for each imported episode. But it was the same description for each episode, nothing like the detailed description in Hulu. I was testing BMT with HGTV shows like "House Hunters". Maybe I was suppose to edit the metadata manually? If this is true, BMT isn't what I was looking for. I was expecting the episode descriptions to be automatically populated and be similar to what is displayed in Hulu. Maybe BMT isn't designed to be used with TV episodes? Just thought I would share my experience.

Actually it sounds as it BMT didn't find the metadata for your files, which is totally possible. BMT runs in 2 modes... the first being an automated processor that checks each file (tv or movie) and then attempts to find metadata/fanart for that movie as its added to your library. BMT has to use fuzzy logic to find things, so it goes without saying that it will not match 100%.
The other mode of operation, is the web ui. The web ui is there to allow you to browse your videos, and to manually fetch metadata for folders or individual items. I tend to rarely use the web ui, since the automatic scanner tends to work fairly well for me.

If you know the IP address of the server on which sage is running... then just use the ip address, ie, something like, http://192.168.1.105:8080/bmt/
localhost is simply a "known" name that refers to the local machine. Whenever you use it, it will always refer to the local machine that you are current on.

From your home network, just find out what the IP# is for your server and use it. I usually set the server to use a static ip # so it's always the same.
Go to the server, and from the main menu, look at SETUP and SYSTEM INFORMATION. You'll find your IP# there. From other computers just use:
http://192.168.1.1:8080/bmt
to get there (replace 192.168.1.1 with YOUR sage server ip number).

Hello Mitch, I'm currently working on some documentation... I realize the documentation for bmt is sparse and out of date :( That's a clear sign that I work on too many projects and as a result I can't do a good job at keeping the documentation up to up2date.
Hopefully over the next month, I'll have some better documentation. When that's ready, I'll put a sticky to that. But until then, I can make this a sticky, if you think it would help others.

The automatic processor is enabled by default when you install the plugin. There is nothing more to do. BUT, the automatic plugin DOES NOT scan pre existing files... it will only scan new files that are added to the library. I think this is one of the biggest misconceptions people have about the automatic plugin, is that they expect it to scan all of the files that are in their library, as well as new additions, but bmt only scans new additions.

I use chrome as well, and after I enter the password it puts a message at the top of the browser window asking me to save.
There isn't an easy way to disable the password feature, and even if you did, it would re-appear on the next update.
If you do want to get rid of the password prompt, you can edit the jetty/contexts/bmt.xml and comment out or remove the following section.

I have fanart enabled, with the default path of D:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV\STVs\Phoenix\Fanart.
When I browse in Sage Video Imports and click on a movie I do indeed see a fanart location and filename at the bottom, yet no Fanart directory exists in the past specified above when I look via explorer.
A little confused... any help appreciated.
EDIT: Ok, I think I see. It lists the default fanart location even if no metadata has been found yet. A bit confusing, but think I got it.

The Fanart folder is listed as a reference so that you can know where to dump manual fanart, if needed. It is the location of the fanart folder, but that folder many not actually exist, as you noticed.

Thanks Stuckless. Another q if I may (not sure if I should be asking here or creating a new thread below):
I'm starting to figure everything out, and I can manually add metadata if I click on the movie, select "find metadata" and then type in only the title in the search title box. If I don't do that though, it can't find the metadata.
Here is the default name for my movies:
title.year.resolution.x264 (e.g. "moviename.2009.1080p.x264")
I would think via the Phoenix "Fanart/Metadata Options," "ignore words in title" default it would just know to search for the title, but it doesn't seem to do that, either automatically or when I hit the find metadata button one by one. Are the periods messing it up perhaps?
What am I missing? Thanks!

well, that is odd... i quoted your selection, well, because I was going to reply... but i guess my mind wandered, sorry about that :(

Actually I don't even think I saved when I added the periods, so not sure that did anything.
Anyway, now I did save but doesn't seem to be working... e.g. when I do try to find metadata those terms still show up in the search box (e.g. .720p still shows up).
Ok, I think I need to start over from scratch, because things probably got a bit confused as I changed some settings in the middle of the scan. Also I changed a few of the source filenames and I can't figure out how you're supposed to get the metadata tools to recognize that.
What's the best way to start over? I selected remove fanart and remove .properties files from the tools menu, but a bunch of them are still there. Can I just remove those manually and then restart the process? Should I also select clear custom metadata fields?
Another dumb q... so the fanart is saved where you select it to be saved, but the boxart (.jpg) and actual metadata (the properties files) are saved in the same directory as all your movies? Do they have to reside there?
Thanks!
EDIT: Looks like it did eventually remove all the properties files, but there are still a bunch of jpgs in there.
ANOTHER EDIT: Ok, I'm pretty sure now that adding in a term like ".720p" into ignore words in title doesn't work, presumably because there's no space before it and therefore metadata tools doesn't recognize the term because its not seeing it as a separate term/word. Any way around this? I'd hate to have to find metadata one at a time for most files. Thanks again.

Hi, seems like every time I re-install sagetv I lose the fanart. Meaning it no longer loads in the Videos menu, and only looks at the generated thumbs for fanart.
I have the plugin's installed, and bmt is working fine. It has populated c:\program files/sage/sage/movies with a lot of nice looking art, but I can't get it to load in sage. The same seems to be true of the recorded TV shows as well...
What's the trick?

When you select to remove .properties and fanart, it only remove fanart and properties for items in your sagetv library. So, yeah, you can safely remove any other residual files, if you want.
It might just be easier if you posted your filename, and then I can test that in my setup.

BMT doing contribute anything to the STV (ie Sage UI), but this sounds like your plugins are being loaded. If you were seeing fanart, then you need to know which plugin provided that, and see if it is still loaded.

OK, if I let the automatic plugin scan this file, I get a good hit, complete with metadata/fanart.
If I don't let the automatic plugin scan the file, but instead I do a scan from the web ui (ie, browse to the folder that has the file, and then hit update metadata), then I get a good hit, and I end up with fanart and metadata.
But, if I don't do either of those to previous options, and then I simply edit the metadata for the item, and then I click find metadata, then the 'discover defaults' button doesn't do a very good job of cleaning up the title. This 3rd option is bug in the web ui, and I'll look at fixing it.
But, to be clear, I had no issues with the automatic scanning.

Well, maybe that's the problem :) In troubleshooting this, I would strip back your setup to the bare minimumn. I don't write the fanart plugins, so I have no idea which ones you are using, and even if you are talking about the default stv, smm, diamond theme, etc.
So, remove all fanart related plugins, except for the bmt web ui.
Then, install only ONE of the plugins (http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48690) listed in this thread, and test it out. Personally, I'd just install bailio's plugin (http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48410) and test with that. I know it works, because it's the only one that i've ever used from that list.
I think the worst thing a person can do, is to install tons of plugins and just hope things work. The more plugins you have installed, more chances that things can go wrong. So, keep plugins to a minimum and when testing out new features, like fanart, stick to one core plugin initially, until you know things are working.

Yes, I see now that by hitting the update metadata button it did much better and got many of my files right. Still, there were many that missed, so it will take a good while to update all of these manually. Why would it not find: "500 Days of Summer.720p.mkv" or "2012.1080p.mkv" for example? These seem real easy.

I just added both of those movies to my collection, hit "Refresh", they both showed up with metadata and fanart. I don't know why it's not working for you. My configuration is a stock, unmodified, configuration, as it would be when BMT is first installed.
Now, if you have .properties lying around, then bmt will skip any file that has an existing .properties, since it assumes that you already have metadata.

Rats. While it's getting about 2/3 of them right, there are many "easy" one's it just won't get and I have to do manually. It just doesn't get much easier than "Precious.720p" (at least I think it wouldn't).
There's no properties file, and it shows up under "missing metadata," so something else must be going on here.

Well, if you are up for a bit of work to troubleshooting... try this....
Remove Precious.720p from your library (ie, copy it somewhere else outside of sage)
From the web ui, hit Refresh (that should tell sagetv to remove it)
Restart the sagetv server (that will clear the logs)
Add Precious.720p to your library.
From the web ui, hit "Refresh" (will cause sagetv to find it)
Wait a couple mins, and then check in the web ui, if it i has metadata.
If not, create a zip of the log files (Tools -> Create Support Request) and email to me.

I'll do it. May take a day or two (or three) but I'll do it. Thanks!
