Hi, all -

Long time listener, first time poster. Heh.

I was wondering what the rules governing disk cleanup are. Namely, as I'm channel surfing, I get dozens of little tiny MPG buffers from the channels I flip by, as the program starts recording each one in the event that I'll want to pause and/or rewind them.

I'm a little paranoid about disk space, so I was wondering how long they sit around before being cleaned up by SageTV?

And now I'm gonna include this smiley for no reason except that I like it:

Those files are the first ones that SageTV automatically deletes when it needs disk space.

Does that mean that they will sit there until disk space is so low that SageTV needs to delete them? If that's the case, I worry about fragmentation.

Can I add to the doubtlessly growing list of features, and ask for a configuration option controlling how often to clean them up? Hourly, daily, weekly, every third tuesday at 3am, the day after Lent, etc. etc. etc...?

Yes, they will sit there until SageTV needs the disk space. The way to get around the fragmentation issue is to have your recording drive formatted with 64k clusters rather than the default 4k. That's helps tremendously with this and in other areas as well.

With 64k blocks, you do not need to worry about fragmentation at all.

SageTV also will delete all of this little files if you shut it down. But why would you want to do that? :dance:

Can I use Partition Magic to do this?

(That's probably more a question for the partition magic ppl than anything...)

What about the small but not so itty bitty files that make their way into the Sage Guide? I've only been running Sage for a few days, and I got quite a few "3 minutes of (blah, blah)" recordings showing up.

Is there some way to set a minimum size on what shows up in the guide?

Those are from when there's an EPG data change. What happens is Sage recorded something and then an EPG update occurred and it was informed that what it recorded has changed. So it strips the metadata from the object since it's no longer valid. That leaves what you see.

It's not a real big problem. What would be nice, though, is hot keys in the guide to transfer a file to the Library and to Delete files, so it can be done with a remote control.

Again, just a suggestion.

There is already a hot key for "Options" which will then allow you to select "Move to Library" or "Delete" with a remote control. We will probably keep it that way so users don't accidentallly hit a remote button and the file disappears.

If you use Girder, it shouldn't be too difficult to set up a multievent to pull up the options menu and select the Move File to Library with one button press. Not ideal, necessarily, but certainly doable.
