I love the idea of these customized skins and so forth, but you guys are loosing me here!!

WHEN will you guys STOP updating and call a skin DONE?

I'm so confused trying to keep up with "download this, then this, look here then here then change this line, and then this line......all the time wondering if what I'm doing is correct, because it's all the same, but just a bit different than the day before!!

How about DELETING all the OLD, outdated files from the forum, and just leave the latest and greatest?

How about updating the instructions as well, so they don't say "this is the same as my old skin", cause then I have to track and find out what the old skin says, or I use the old instructions, hoping I'm still following them correctly and insert the correct line when I'm told!

Maybe I'm not the norm, but I can't keep up and learn as fast as thesechanges. So I wind up trying nothing.

Has anyone tried to create an INSTALL program for these skins? Then it's just install and it changes the settings for you.

Wow, these guys are just doing this for fun. I don't think we should request them to do anything.

I'm just glad they are working so had on all those STV's and that they make them available free of charge.

I can appreciate the fact they are doing it for free, I was expressing an opionion that if we the general public are to be kept from this proprietary software, and a few chosen few are doing all the work and feeding us scraps, it should be regulated and documented for all to be able to understand.

They have done an excllent job in creating these skins and such but it does get confusing with all the steps and instructions involved.

I think we should request them to do certain things, as they are the ones only allowed to provide us with these options right now. Nothing wrong with asking for a CLEAN way to install these features, with good documentation. If it was a free for all, I'd make my skin my way and be done with it. I suppose it I could also say it's frustrating to be dependant on someone else, then they don't do it in a structured way to simplify the process.

I don't mean this as a SLAM on these individuals, and I know they are doing it for free and for fun, but in some respects they are representitives of FREY technologies, and are in fact keeping the buzz about studio alive. I have very many thanks to them as well for all there hard work. :goodjob:

You are wrong. Period. They are performing an important function to frey by participating in a private beta test which is done almost universally in the software world. That they are willing to spend their time providing us with the fruits of their labors is a kindness. No one has any right to ask anything more of them. Yet when people have asked for specific mods, they have often complied out of the goodness of their hearts. If you don't want to be confused by the unofficial product of independent beta testers, don't use them. Avoid the threads about their work. No one is making you use them and they were certainly never promised as part of the purchase of Sage. Get a clue.

ErsatzTom is right. The idea of an evolving skin (ie never done) is fine...it is done for you when you stop updating...now one forces you to go to the next version. Hard to install???? It is easy, and the same every time...copy several files into a Sage directory...reboot....done. If that is too hard, don't use them.

hey no reason to get disgruntle with him

why not just explain how to install the .STVs

he made no attack on either of you

I feel that yes they do an awesome job and it is very nice that they are willing to help us out by adding features we like and so on

but it is apparent to me that is this the problem

he would probably need just some help knowing how to install them and to know that we all want to use Studio and be patient

they are trying to make it the best they can

To install the .STVs

well only mlbdude's currently has an update
but just download and unzip the .STV in the original STV folder

and do the same for mlbdude's update after install the base one

laurenglenn's you just drop it in the original STV folder

then you will have to open the properties folder and need to change the last line at the end of it where it says original.stv to the stv you want to use

and if you want to know when a new version is updated just check once on the weekend cause thats normally when they are posted or subscribe to the topic

it is ok to rant in my opinion
and I am not going to bash you for it
you are not cussing or insulting anyone (well not really)

I hope this does help and frey is trying to make fast user switching available in an update

you can download the original.stv updated version from the FAQs
and it has fast stv switching but alot of the current STVs do not support it

Actually, I think all the current STVs support switching via Setup -> Detailed Setup -> Advanced -> SageTV Application Definition (.STV File). The problem seems to be that some stuff from the old one sometimes gets left over. But, you can then simply exit SageTV (not sleep) and restart it & it should be fine. (No reboot needed.)

As for installation instructions: MlbDude, malore, and MalDude all have installation instructions on their web pages. (I haven't folowed Lauren's too much, so I can't comment about that one.) I'm not sure it can be simplified any further w/o writing an install program, which I don't plan to do. If you let us know just what part is unclear... maybe it can be clarified.

Yes we all get impatient at times waiting for things... but when there isn't much we can do about it, there is no use arguing about it and making each other upset.

The complication for me is decideing WHAT file is current, as ther seems to so many to choose from, at least in the forum threads.

I don't want to be worried about bugs or installing the wrong file first or second etc.....

My SAGE machine is working PERFECTLY, and to screw it up now will cost HOURS to fix. (TIME I DONT HAVE)

I understand the install better now , THANK you kny3Twalker. I just need to get the right file.

Just for the record, I asked for a specific feature, the miniguide by itself, bus was basically told I would have to wait for the release of STUDIO and do it myself or get the entire skin, wich I didn't really like, with some of the bugs that were being reported.

well the fast STV switching may be supported through restarting Sage
but I thought the idea was to be able to switch STV while sage is running
and thats why that comment was made about it

also there are few to none bugs in MlbDude's skin
I use it all the time and even choose my own background and use the old style icons(realistic images)
(I like cartoons but that went to far with those icons)

the only issue I have seen of late with mlbdudes is where some of the text in the recordings will be over the first run icon
(not even a big deal but hopefully will be fixed)

there is a picture of this I posted in his STV topic

I do believe though if you find bugs report them
I am sure they would rather fix them because they probably use the skins themself

Also miniguide has no problems here

The complication for me is decideing WHAT file is current, as ther seems to so many to choose from, at least in the forum threads. MlbDude, Malore, laurenglenn* and Opus4 have been very good at having a website that always has the link to the newest version of their STV. The link to their sites is in the first post of their threads. The threads are only for discussion of features and possible issues.

I hope this answers you question as to which file is most recent. I'd provide links to the websites or STV files, but if the links ever change in the future this would just add to any possible confusion. This is the reason Frey has requested all STV release be made in this manner. If the hosted space ever changes then the link can always be updated on the first post of the thread. This ensures there is only one area the users need to check to make sure they get the lastest version of that person's STV.

MlbDude's case is a little different in that he now has two STVs. But each still follows the rules above. Just check the first post of each thread for the correct link. As for the reason there are two, he's generous. ;) Seriously he expalins in his threads. Just read up a little or ask a specific question(about the exact differences between the 2) and I'm sure we can help you with that.

*laurenglenn has a link in the first post that will directly download the newest/current version of her STV. All info for her STV modifications can be found in her thread. In other words... She is following the same basic guidelines as everyone above, just without maintaining a seperate/dedicated website.

/justme Editted because I accidentally signed my SHSPVR site username. Sorry if this caused anyone some confusion. I try to use justme everywhere, but as you can imagine that name goes fast. ;)

broderp, according to the available information about Sage Studio, when it's available, you'll be able to pick and choose the skin "components" that you want from a variety of what is currently an STV to make your own interface. The Studio beta testers can confirm or deny, but, ultimately, the control will be in your hands and you will be less reliant on the complete skin package/STV released by any one person.
