Hey!!!

Am I the only one without Studio now?!?!?
I am seeing more and more people putting out STV's. I'm beginning to think I missed an announcement or something.

I have been testing it for the last hour, and I have to say this is a great skin. I love the weather stuff. I especially like the fact that you have it configured it for DC by default. Anyways, no bugs as of yet, which means you have been very careful with your construction of this skin. Good work, and thanks for your time and effort!!

awesome, looks pretty cool :) I must say you've done a great job!!!!

If you would also include commercial skip feature this would rock and roll :)

Anyway I did install it on my client pc and it looks very very cool...

Thanks all...

You can thank salsbst for the DC default config -- I am in Belgium!

I don't have any plans yet to include commercial skip (nor mlbdude recompression) as I do not use it myself, and I am not sure how it works! You could always ask malore to include my features in his STV :)

There is now a wiki for this STV (http://www.sage-community.org/index.cgi/wiki/NielmStv) where supplemental information can be added.

The source code for the java classes can be found at
http://www.sf.net/projects/sageplugins/

If anyone wants to make a GUI for building the menu XML (it is beyond my java skills), the sagemenu java classes already contain code for writing their own XML, so 'all' you need to build is the GUI front-end for editing them :)

After using your STV on my client PC I must say its great, it is awesome, what I like is the ease of usage, Watch TV on the first menu, then when you are watching something you get a menu with so many options, you can go right to the place you want to go, very very accesible for usage. Loving it...

Seriously I'm loving it.... If it only had commercial skip in addition to all the other features it would simply be da best STV :)

Once again, thanks for this great STV!!!!

Wow, it looks great! Is there any chance that you will be adding malore's commercial advance?

edbmdave
08-25-2004, 09:55 AM
Two questions.

One, do you support the changing of the image file name for folder.Jpg like MlbDude did? (This prevents the folder.jpgs from showing up as images in the Imported Pictures, I renamed my folder.img).

Two, Did you (by chance) grab the protion of the Beta MLBDUDE2 skin that allows for Compression of files?

Thanks

nielm
08-25-2004, 10:23 AM
1) the folder.jpg file name is set in the properties file (library_image=folder.jpg), so if that it what you mean, yes I probably support it (not actually tested it yet though)

2) no -- I only took certain screens from the MLBdude2/malore skins, so no compression stuff, nor commercial skip (which is why they don't appear in the feature list).

A tip regarding images: SageTV will not add hidden images to the picture library. So, an alternative is to set the hidden attribute for image files you don't want added to the lib. Ex: When you use Windows Media Player to rip music CDs, all of the image files it adds are hidden & thus are not in the lib.

Thanks. Did not know if you might have grabbed it as part of the section you copied or not...

One More Question: is the IMDB lookup just an additional screen or will it create and populate the info.my file for that movie? (THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!)

Nielm,

I can't sem to get to your links. I've tried several different computers and browsers (PC/Mac, Mozilla IE...) and none of them can get to any ...brutele.be URL, yours or any others I have tried.

The message I get back from the failed link is: "The operation timed out when attempting to contact homeusers.brutele.be."

Am I the only one having this problem? What silly little thing am I overlooking? Who's on first? Help!!!

Thanks,

Lynn

Well done, Nielm
I love the skin. I am having one issue. WHen I play a file from the imported Video Library (clicking Watch Now), it appears in the upper right hand corner and cannot be changed. In Mlbdude 2, when I click on Watch Now, it would open the player in full screen (like the DVD one). Any ideas? THanks.

I just got it to work (freak'in great BTW) but I'm messing around with the Weather module, I'm trying to get it to work with Boulder Colorado USA like how it works with Washington DC.

My question is if theres an easy way to config this? If not then thats cool, I'll figure it out with alittle more work. :)

Great job on this, only problem is that I'm also working with MLBDUDE2's Beta Compression skin so it's kind of hard to loss a useful feature. :(

I'm probably missing something easy, but I can't get the RSS feeds to work.

I've added several Yahoo feeds, and the basic text is shown, but when the browser is launched, it just goes here:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2
->>Document Not Found

Also, at first I was using Firefox as my default browser, but it'd "bonk" with an error message that it couldn't find the page as well. I switched back over to IE, but still no love...

any thoughts?

Thx-

If you mean one of the submenus of the main menu, then the font size is determined by the property: ui/heading_font_size with a default of 28

If you mean the Sage Recoridngs screen (showing recorded files), there are 3 different ones (determined by the settings in detailed setup/enhancements/malores menus options)...

Malores' one uses the defined font size in that options menu (properties setting multimenu_fontsize, default 16).

Mlbdudes 2-pane one, and the default single pane one are the identical menus to the OriginalV2 skin, so you should also have this problem there. The font size is determined by the properties file setting ui/base_font_size with a default of 18.

Opera is very keyboard-friendly, and has the ability to zoom in (+) and out (+) on a page (which is why I use it!) and is fast to start-up

I have a girder GML that does some minor Opera commands (attached), pre-configured for an ATI RW.

It is well commented, and there are hints in the installation instructions and wiki (see first post for links), but finding weather images sources is your own problem :)

When watching a video from the Import Video Library, I click Watch Now and it does not show Full Screen. When I use MlbDude2's interface, clicking Watch Now it shows me in Full screen automatically. The only way that I found to show it in Full Screen in Nielm's STV is to click Watch Now and go to the Main Menu and click View TV and it brings it up in Full screen. Is there anyway to make it show Full Screen when I click Watch Now in the Video Library? Thanks,

Updated to version 1.2
STV fix only
Fixed 'Watch Now' for video file
Added Favourite limit by Timeslot
Added (UNTESTED) mlbdude2 beta automatic recompression (http://forums.sage.tv/forums/showthread.php?postid=50032#post50032)

As this is an STV fix only, you only need to download and unzip the STV zipfile (http://www.sage-community.org/~nielm/nielm_stv/nielm_stv.zip)

For the auto recompression, I *think* I have everything from the MLBdude2 beta STV, but I may have missed something. As I don't do recompression myself, would those that do please ensure that it is working :)

Love the skin, I updated to the newest version you have posted but I can't find any options to enable mlbdude's compression. Usually, if you are on the info page of a recordings it is on the list on the left side of the screen. I see no options. Also, I couldn't find a way to enable, or disable it in the advanced section. Am I missing something?

woops, got it working. I somehow managed to paste the updated STV in the wrong location:) It works great now. The weather feature is awesome. The only thing I am having trouble getting used to is the main page. It seems somewhat cluttered with the vertical line running between the options and the preview window (which is a little small too). I quess I am just used to mlbdude's clean looking main page. All in all, this is the best feature set STV yet. Thanks a bunch and.....can' t wait till studio is available to all.

The preview window is the same size/position as on all the other screens where it is available. This is deliberate -- some low-power machines (my via EPIA M10000 for instance) get upset when they have to resize the video overlay window...

I know what you mean about the cluttered look... I was copying the original style, but with all the widgets, it gets a bit too much...

I do intend to add it at some point because I like Mlbdudes OSD, it was just that I wanted to release soon enough before I went on holiday to catch the major bugs!

Thanks for the slick STV. I'm having a problem with malore style sagetv recordings. If I use a small font size, it doesn't display any text. If I use a large one, it crops the bottom half of the text.

Ok, I see this... it is using the ui/base_font_size property instead. For the moment, keep multimenu_fontsize the same as ui/base_font_size. I will try to fix this today, but cannot guarantee it...

I also do see a problem with one menu: to get there be in the main screen. then press:
Sage TV PVR -> Recordings
then in this menu press with right mouse button.

This menu has left column pretty ok, but I think there should be something on the right side as well, it seems like there is microscopic writing in two places on the right side, and mouse can be moved over those buttons as well.

I dont know how to make a screen capture so I cant post what I do see. I did not modify any of the files in your package not I changed any font settings.

Regards, I love this STV :)

Yep I see this... This is a problem with opions menu in my import of all the Malore-style menus.

You can switch back to the default sage Recordings menu, or Mlbdude 2-column style by going to:
SageTV PVR -> Custom Menus -> Custom menus Settings (scroll down) -> Sage Recordings Style
and set it to Default.
This setting is also available in:
SageTV PVR -> Setup -> Detailed Setup -> Enhancements -> Malore Menus Options -> Sage Recordings Style.

Its been put on the to-do list for when I get back!

didn't bother to go thru the whole thread so i'm not sure if this has been reported.

Once you enter the recordings list, the left button doesn't take you back to the menu.

EDIT: Noticed this is specific to the malore custom menus.
Changed Rec style to mlbdude and problem disappeared.

Same thing in the weather screen. It might be better to have the left button back out to the menu (instead of cycling to the sponsored links tab)

I am getting the error "failed to load sagemenureader class" when loading this STV. Any ideas?

On the subject of improvements my current list is:
1. The music player needs improvement. The ability to just select a play list to play (m3u) or a directory and it to play, jumping straight into the visualisations would be a good start. Currently my next / previous buttons don't jump between files in a play list either, which is poor.

2. It may just be my set up, but the audio sync for DVD play back (AC3 pass through using WinDVD codecs) is poor. It doesn't retain sync correctly, if it every syncs correctly at all.

Other than that I am seriously considering buying SageTV. It looks very good indeed!

I like this skin a lot. The only problem I have is the weather module. When I try and cut and paste your weather lines into the web browswer and change the lines to SFO for my area, it shows in the web browswer fine, so I just make the changes in the config file, but when I try to load up the weather suite, the maps always remain as DC, they never seem to change.

I am not sure what is up. I am pretty sure I have the right lines, as they work when I try to cut and paste. any help would be appreciated.

I put your STV on my machine last night and it is awsome. My wife absolutely loves the weather module, and I love the upcoming recordings window on the bottom of every page, and the disk space in the lower right corner.

There is a slight problem with the menu's however. When you go to Sage TV PVR/Schedule recordings, then use the right arrow to go into favorites, then use the left arrow to leave favorites and return to Schedule recordings you see the old schedule recordings menu. hit the left arrow again and you go back to your schedule recordings menu. Just thought you would like to know.

Hi Guys,

I'm the author of the weather menu, "Weather Report Suite" (named after a Grateful Dead medley).

The bad news is that I won't be supporting every request for assistance with this menu. The good news is that I'm willing to support it to some degree.

Be it known that the menu doesn't care where you download your data from, nor where you live, nor in which way you arrange your Weather Report Suite submenus.

I gathered the URLs in the example config from web pages on the internet. Accuweather is nice. You aren't restricted to accuweather, though... keep that it mind. Any animated gifs or sequence of images that you can download from the internet can be strung together by WRS into an animated weather map.

So, Colorado? My uncle lives there:

http://radar.accuweather.com/adcbin/public/metro_radar_large.asp?nxsite=den&type=loop is the animated weather map for the denver metro area.

Within the HTML for that page, you can search for "basemap" -- include the quotes in your search. You'll find a 'div' element that precedes a bunch of 'img' elements. Those are your animated gifs. You should be able to recognize the 'src' attributes in those img elements and plug them in to the weatherconfig.xml file in the right places. This stuff isn't rocket science, it just takes a little knowledge of HTML and XML.

Here is Colorado:

<div class=basemap id="basemap">
<img
src="http://sirocco.accuweather.com/adc_nxmos_640x480c/re2/inmaremr_den.gif"
height="480" width="640" border="0">
</div>
<div class=imclass id="image2">
<img
src="http://vortex.accuweather.com/phoenix2/images/common/metro_layers/roads/den_6x4_roads.gif">
</div>
<div class=imclass id="image3">
<img
src="http://vortex.accuweather.com/phoenix2/images/common/metro_layers/cities/den_6x4_cities.gif">
</div>
<div class=imclass id="image4">
<img
src="http://vortex.accuweather.com/phoenix2/images/common/metro_layers/markers/den_6x4_int.gif"
alt="DEN Metro Radar">
</div>
<div class="emclass">
<img
src="http://vortex.accuweather.com/phoenix2/images/common/keys/radar_400x40.gif">
</div>

I will not respond to requests for URLs for other cities. I hope you guys will understand that I have spent a lot of time creating the Weather Report Suite so that we all can have great animated weather maps, and respect the fact that I don't want to become the "find my URLs for me" guy.

Stuart

kny, I wasn't directing my statements about limited support towards you in particular. I'm very happy to answer general questions about how the WRS menu and it's config file work. I just won't be the guy who answers the questions like, "I live in Madagascar, what URLs should I use."

Finally ... My SageTV is getting closer and closer to what I'd like to see in a PVR. After a little XML kindergarten training on my own (one night), some trial and error ... and of course thanks nielm, :goodjob: I was able to design my own custom menu layout!

I have also read in this forum about someone who would like to see Sage with a beach scene background offering like Meedio. Well, I tried searching for a photo that would work well with the menu layout and wa-la, sky's the limit!! This was all added to my own font title choice and a little flare added to the Sage logo.

See Attached JPEG ...

Thanks for motivating me to fool with this nielm ... ;)

I would like to see "all" of MlbDude2 menu options available in this STV and I noticed a few things that didn't work properly for me. I have some probable dumb questions as well. I'll compile them and let you know by time you return from vacation.

All in all, I love it and can't wait to try Studio. Well, if you guys keep making these great STV's maybe I won't really need it! :confused: Kidding ... Of course I want Studio too ....

Thanks, T.

Hi.....

Installed the 8-26 version and found, what I think, are the following bugs:

1. I used mlbdude's old recording display (selected from the menu), and when I deleted 3 recordings I, the recordings turned orange (instead of going away) and I could not go back to select shows to watch any more. The menu just stayed in the right-hand side going up and down the newly-oranged deleted recordings. I know they deleted becuase the disk space immedately jumped up. The above problem was using the remote. I was able to use the mouse to select something on the left column, however (but not desirable),

2. Went to view pictures. It now seems that the entire directory must have its thumbnails made to work properly. This seems different than before. Anyway, I was able to view a few pictures, but after scrolling down to where thumbnails weren't visible and hitting OK to view it, Sage stopped working for about 10 minutes then all of a sudden woke up. During the freeze, the mouse would not work on sage, but would for other applications.

3. Music Jukebox. Ok.... no flames or jokes here ok ? I have ONE SINGLE Yani album (remember, we all agreed no jokes)...... however, about 2/3 of my albums end up with Yani's album as their album art. It looks like this skin is placing the Yani art (where it got that from I don't know) in place of albums that don't have any art. I don't use folder.jpg for audio, just the embedded album art that's part of the ID3 tag.

4. Weather Suite..... Small little errors with remote cursor movement. When you go from Current Conditions and hit DOWN to see the radar, it leaves CURRENT highlited along with RADAR. If you move again, it leaves CURRENT highlighted and also selects METRO RADAR. There's some other strangeness when you cursor left to right, too.

5. I'm seeing a lot of "screen debris" left over in the video window, particularly on the main menu. Stuff like parts of blue bars, etc. I am running Overlay mode with 3D on and keying off.

Past this, it looks good. Unfortunately, I had to remove it from the main TV (and server) as the WAF (wife acceptance factor) goes WAY down when something doesn't work 100% with the remote. When WAF goes down, my aggrivation and "inbox" goes up. "-)

Keep up the good work.

Stacy

Ok . I loaded this at first and it was GREATTTTT! Then it stopped loading (I did change the other 3 locations for weather first). Now it will not load (goes back to original) and I have tried deleting and reloading files for the stv but to no avail. The properties file says nielm and the menu setup says nielm.stv but the original is loaded?

I love this stv,

I am having one little problem

after using it for a while (not exactly sure how long but more than a hour less than a day) when i go into sage recordings (the one with the description at the top, the show name lower left and the episode list on lower right) all the text in the bottom 2 panes dissapears you can still move around in the panes like you would expect its just the font has become invisiable

2 solutions to this probelm once it occures
1 completely quit sage or 2 clear filters i usually have it set to show "not watched" only

this has happened to me on at least 10 occasions, I am not sure the sequence of events that causes it to break but at least i have a solution.

I am currently running it without the filter to see if this is whats causing it to happen

Sounds like you're having the same problem that I'm having. There is a bug in this STV that causes the font in malore style sage recordings to use basefont size from the sage.properties file instead of the font size from the malore menu options. The reason that the fonts dissapear is because the field size it's using is from the malore settings. If you go into detailed setup and change the font size for malore menu's to 16, the text *should* stay. nielm said he would fix this when he gets back from vacation. For more info read some of the posts from earlier in this thread.

First, I would like to thank nielm and others for their efforts with Studio. I am particularly enjoying the weather configurability and menu customizations.

I am attaching my weatherconfig.xml file in the hopes that it will be helpful to someone else. I have changed the locations (to Saratoga, Providence, New York and Los Angeles) and added the area Infrared images from WeatherBug. (Note that the extention .txt has been added to weatherconfig.xml.txt to facilitate the attacment.)

I am not endorsing WeatherBug particularly, just using it as an example for adding to the menus in the weather module. WeatherBug is at: http://ww5.weatherbug.com/Pages/Esi/Default.html?referrer_id=1&webwx_zip=10001

What I have found is that these sites don't always use the obvious location IDs. For example where "nyc" points to New York City for AccuWeather metro views they then go and use "vny" for Los Angeles! You have to look carefully at the URLs in their HTML source to figure out how they are addressing different areas. So, you can't count on airport identifiers or zip codes to be used consistantly.

Hope this is helpful.

a) I guess you're certain that you really are looking at the original STV and not the nielm STV (they have the same looks)

b) If the forum won't let you upload the STV as is, just put a .txt extension on the end of it (or put it in a zip file).

It may be (I'm not sure) that SageTV falls back to the original STV if it cannot load the specified STV. You might try moving or renaming the original STV to ensure that it is not loaded. At least that will allow you to prove to yourself that the original STV is being loaded.

Taking a look at Niel's code, it appears that, if you are Win2k or later, you will get the command:

cmd.exe /C start "console" /wait "C:\Program Files\Meedio\Meedio Essentials\Meedio.exe" -config config_dvd.xml

from that.

Win95 or 98 would get

command.com /C start "console" /wait "C:\Program Files\Meedio\Meedio Essentials\Meedio.exe" -config config_dvd.xml

While I can't guarantee that that is what his code is doing (about to jump on a plane), it certainly appears to be attempting to do that. So, if that doesn't work from the start/run prompt, then it probably won't work from the STV. If it does work, then either I've misread his code, or Runitime.exec doesn't do what I think it does.

I like the features you added. RSS and Weather are awsome. I have a few suggestions if you dont mind. First, if you created an easy way to change the presetup cities you have chosen it would be nice. Maybe a way to adjust them by entering a zip code into a setup menu. I would love to change those to maybe towns where relatives live and things like that. The other suggestion I have may be my own problem but assistance is always nice. :o) I noticed that the selection box appears to cover up part of the text in the menus. Also the text looks a little squished. I dont see that with the other STVs I have tried. If that could be fixed it would be nice. If you get those fixed, I think you would have an even better mod than before. I love what is there so far and hope it gets better.

Thanks Are you talking about images or the weather.com info?

With the images, the updates should be noticeable even if you are parked on an animation (the new images are slipped into the animation when they are downloaded).

With the weather.com data, you have to move from one menu to another to see the update.

b) some options to determine whether:
(i) WRS returns to the last submenu that you were on if you return to WRS from some other part of the STV (currently you always get the "top left" submenu when you land in WRS); and
(ii) whether the current location is sticky when you return to WRS from another part of the STV (currently it always reverts to the first location in the list)

That said, in addition to graciously including WRS in his STV, Niel has already taken the bull by the horns and added to what I did with WRS (he made some nice modifications to make it weather.com license-compliant -- thanks to Niel for working out that sticky point!). So I wouldn't rule out the fact that perhaps he can be cajoled into providing an easier configuration process. He's nicer than I am :) Anyway, if I were to change the WRS code base, there's no guarantee that Niel would include the changes in his STV, but my impression is that he's a cooperative guy!

...I noticed that the selection box appears to cover up part of the text in the menus. Also the text looks a little squished. I dont see that with the other STVs I have tried...Is this in the Weather Report Suite menus or elsewhere or both?

Thanks,
Stuart

Taking a look at Niel's code, it appears that, if you are Win2k or later, you will get the command:

cmd.exe /C start "console" /wait "C:\Program Files\Meedio\Meedio Essentials\Meedio.exe" -config config_dvd.xml

from that.

Thanks for the info. It appears that this method doesn't work for any parameters passed with a leading dash. I can't pass parameters to Meedio or Girder which is really limiting the capabilities of this menu system. :bang:

Thanks for the post Salsbst. The menu and font problems I am having are mainly in the TV viewing menus. They dont have anything to do with the weather portion of this STV. I encounter the abnormal fonts when trying to view already recorded shows and things of that sort.

Just as a side note. I really do appreciate what you contributors do to improve SageTV. I would love to see SageTV provide more to make it a full HTPC solution. Right now I see it as an awsome PVR with some HTPC capabilities. It would be wonderful to have everything included into Sage TV that most front ends have. Your guys work makes SageTV a better product day by day.

Okay, I solved my own problem. In case anyone else ever runs into this problem: I'm having a problem passing parameters correctly when calling external apps. For example, running "C:\Program Files\Meedio\Meedio Essentials\Meedio.exe" -config config_dvd.xml from the start menu->run command works great. However when I try to run the same line from Nielm's STV it doesn't work.
<actionMenuItem title="DVD">
<actionList>
<extCommand
command="C:\Program Files\Meedio\Meedio Essentials\Meedio.exe"
arguments="-config config_dvd.xml"
waitforexit="1"/>
</actionList>
</actionMenuItem>

I fixed it as follows:
<actionMenuItem
title="Play DVD"
icon="STVs\OriginalV2\mlbdude\Default\mm_dvd.png">
<actionList>
<sageCommand command="Power Off" />
<extCommand command="C:\Progra~1\Meedio\Meedio~1\Meedio.exe"
arguments="-config C:\Progra~1\Meedio\Meedio~1\config_dvd.xml"
waitforexit="1" />
<sageCommand command="Power On" />
</actionList>
</actionMenuItem>

With the images, the updates should be noticeable even if you are parked on an animation (the new images are slipped into the animation when they are downloaded).

With the weather.com data, you have to move from one menu to another to see the update.

I checked 24 hours later and moved from one menu to another and one location to another and nothing updated. It was only after a reboot did the updates start again. I had been checking the radar in Florida too, and that never changed either until the reboot.

Seems to be working now, it has been updating today.

8. Weather Suite - I was able to set it up to show my location via zip code and can see Local Conditions, National Conditions, Forecast, etc. But, when in Local Conditions, I am missing the Area Radar and Metro Radar buttons? Not sure why?? Also, under National Conditions the word Precipitation in the button says “Precipitatio” and then wraps the “n” around to the next line.

On #7, you say you're not talking about Weather Report Suite, and yet it sounds sort of like the "loading" message that Weather Report Suite delivers if it is launch before any data have been downloaded. Are you sure this isn't a WRS issue?

On #8, yes, that one has been seen in early testing by folks and is something that I will be looking into. No ETA on it as of now.

Thanks Salsbst!

On #7 ... I have attached a JPG with both screen shots. It appears that it is not WRS ... Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but let me tell you anyway.

This is how my Sage grew up over time;

1 - SageTV out of the box.
2 - MlbDude2 1.8.7 overlaid
3 - MlbDude Weather Plug-in installed
4 - Nielm 1.2 STV overlaid

Since Nielm included Weather and WRS, I am not sure if there may be any issues when I moved from 3 to 4 above? Or not?

On #8 ... Thanks a lot, I eagerly await your update ... :)

Oh ... One other question ... Can the WRS text be changed to reflect shadowed or outlined text so it would stand out a bit better on light backgrounds?

Thanks ... T.

On #7, still not clear to me whether this is WRS or not. I'll have to check when I get back from the weekend.

WRS font can be changed by Niel if he sees fit.

Actually, I have customized your STV with my Sage Client and even did a usability test with the fam. They are very happy. But, before I move it over to my Server I anxiously await your feedback form this thread ... ;)

Two updates hold me back I am very spoiled with and used to using ...

1 - MlbDude2's new 2-pane "SageTV Recordings" and

Hey Salsbst ... You back?? :confused:

Wondering if you had any more thoughts on #7??

Also, on the font, I thought maybe it could be a properties file change. Um, but then again I guess you can't change font effects like shadow or outline ... Guess we'll see what Mr. Nielm has to say ... ;)

On the font issue, I must completely defer to Niel since it's a look and feel thing.

On #7, I'm working on a big deadline for work, so I won't be able to look into it just yet. A day or two more, I'd say. All I was going to do was try to understand why the menu says "Weather" at the top in your first screenshot, and then switches to "Weather Report Suite" in the second screenshot. It's the fact that it only says "Weather" that makes me suspect it's not WRS. I've yet to actually see Niel's STV in action, and I honestly don't remember whether WRS starts out saying "Weather" and then switches to "Weather Report Suite".

Not a problem. Work always comes first ... :(

Also ... I think there is some confusion here. It's not what you think ...

Nielm's STV has 2 Weather menu items to select from. One called "Weather" and the other "Weather Suite".

See screens shots he provides ...

http://www.sage-community.org/~nielm/nielm_stv/

I believe "Weather" provides you direct access to what is similar to forcast in WRS. I believe it is the MlbDude2 Weather viewer based upon the bullet items on the web link above.

My problem reflected in the screen shots I provided in an earlier post reflect that the second menu item in Nielm "Weather Suite" comes up fine and "Weather" now hangs. That is the problem with "Weather".

Outside of that WRS had a few bugs which I noted earlier.

Some there ya have it ...

Have fun on your project .... ;)

Thanks, T.

Thanks for clarifying that. BTW, now I see why everyone is using the name Weather Suite instead of Weather Report Suite... oh well, perhaps the Grateful Dead are best forgotten and I should just move on. :)

Anyhoo, I just went back and reread your word doc. Along with the issue of the wrapping of the word Precipitation (which is on my "list"), in #8, you say:

Weather [Report] Suite -- I was able to set it up to show my location via zip code and can see Local Conditions, National Conditions, Forecast, etc. But, when in Local Conditions, I am missing the Area Radar and Metro Radar buttons? Not sure why??....

There may be a mismatch in your xml config between the locations and the rotan elements. Here's an example of a locations element:

<locations >
<location
name="Winterville"
label="Winterville">
<weathersourceinfo id="28590"/>
</location>
</locations>
Note the name attribute of the location element.

And here is a submenus element:

<submenus
label="Local Conditions" >
<currentconditions
label="Local Info"/>
<rotan
label="Local Doppler"
view="metro"
local="true"/>
</submenus>
Note that the rotan element has an attribute local="true". This means the rotan element labeled, "Local Doppler" is configured as a local animation. The view name for this menu is "metro".

Now take a look at the rotan configuration section:

<view name="metro" location="Winterville" speed="750" delay="3000" maxage="0.25">
<layer type="image" href="http://pinpoint.ecu.edu/radar/rad.gif" imageType="gif"/>

</view>
Note that there is a view the location of which is "Winterville" and the name of which is "metro". If there had not been a view configured to match both the view name and the location, then that submenu item would be hidden when the user selected Winterville as the current location. The theory behind this is you may have a location of interest for which you don't have all the animations. For instance, I grew up in New Haven, CT and so I configured New Haven as one of my locations. However, there is no such thing as a metro radar for New Haven. Hence, in my config, I marked the "metro" sumenu item as local, and didn't supply a view with the name of "metro" and the location of "NewHaven".

I think this is what is happening to you. BTW, it's case sensitive.

Lastly, have I now noticed and comment on all of the issues/bugs you reported in WRS? (I'm can be a bit scatterbrained -- see reference to musical tastes above.)

Thanks,
Stuart

P.S. The work-work project stinks. There are a lot of HTPC projects I'd rather be doing, very difficult to focus.

Thanks for the quick reply!! ... I know you are busy ... I will check out your recommendations to see it that is the problem with WRS ...

So, I guess I am realizing you can not comment on why my Weather item is not loading since it appears to be an MlbDude2 plug in inside of Nielm's STV ...

I guess I agree on work projects ... I'd also say this HTPC stuff doesn’t feel like real work ... ;)

I have a similiar issue.. Except mine doesn't lock up. It just sits there and does nothing except say loading.... I can break out by hitting giude or something like that.. What is that weather button supposed to do? My zip is 01519 if that matters....

Ok.. I got it working...
I think because I never had MLBDude loaded it didn't have the getweather module. So I grabbed the weather.com extractor here (http://forums.freytechnologies.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6249)
and followed the instructions. Then I needed to grab the weather icons from MLBdude2 and with a llittle necessary tweaking, it worked.

A note about the weather button needing MLBdude's stuff might be nice to have somewhere in the documentation (or is it there and I missed it?)

Thanks for all the great work that everyone has put in!! :goodjob:

Hmmm .... I had MlbDude2 installed with the GetWeather plug-in installed. See extract from my properties file below;

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

mlbdude/weather_exe=\\STVs\\OriginalV2\\MlbDude\\GetWeather.exe

mlbdude/weather_exe_java=false

mlbdude/weather_file=\\STVs\\OriginalV2\\MlbDude\\Weather.txt

mlbdude/weather_provider=www.weather.com

mlbdude/weather_url=http\://www.weather.com/xml/ext/

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

It did work with the MlbDude2 STV!!

Then I installed Nielm over MlbDude and it just hangs there in the loading state??.

BTW, I tried changing "false" to "true" above, but that didn't work either.

FYI, Here is my XML menu call for Weather;

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

<internalScreenMenuItem

title="Weather"

icon="STVs\OriginalV2\mlbdude\Default\mm_weather.png"

screen="Weather Menu -- CSM"/>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lastly, you are right ... I can also click the Sage Logo to go back to Main Menu. Before trying that I thought it locked and just right-clicked Sage in the task bar and closed it.

But, bottom line ... I still can not load MlbDude2 Weather in Nielm. Got me?????

Thanks, T.

mlbdude/ weather_exe=\\STVs\\OriginalV2\\MlbDude\\GetWeather.exe

Oh... Is that space real in the weather_exe thing?? or was that an artifact of copying? I don't think the space should be there..

Try using the weather.com extractor. It's a little different. There is no weather.exe. It's a batch file with two other files. It runs the batch file which loads the data from weather.com to a text file.
then the weather module parses the data from the file. But you have to change some of the properties. The instructions are easy enough to follow...

The other thing you might try (which I don't know if it has been mentioned) but look at your actual file names. Are they case sensitive? Is the file really called GetWeather.exe or is it getweather.exe. Also the Weather.txt.. Is it weather.txt? In the other thread where I got the weather.com extrator (here (http://forums.freytechnologies.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6249)) I think I saw something mentioned about case sensitivity..... Maybe Niel's is case sensitive where MLBdude's wasn't?

I never found the weather.exe because I never installed mlbdude2 so I just got the weather.com extractor. but I think our issue was the same. It can't find the weather unit...

jb ... nope there was no real space in the properties file. Must have been to copy / paste.

However, I have some good news ... I just saved a bunch of money on my insurance .... Sorry, couldn't resist! Too much SageTV ... really need ComSkip ... ;)

Anyway, the real good news is while looking for the space in my properties file and stepping through the reinstall of "GetWeather" I found two problems ...

1- mlbdude/weather_exe=\\STVs\\OriginalV\\MlbDude\\GetWeather.exe

should read ...

mlbdude/weather_exe=\\STVs\\OriginalV\\MlbDude\\GetWeather.bat

thus BAT, not EXE ... ??? Don't ask! :blush:

2 - Then I noticed in the Getweather readme that there was no;

mlbdude/weather_url=http\://www.weather.com/xml/ext/

Not sure why this was there??

So, I remarked it out and BAM! Weather works!! :) :) :) :)

Now, I have both Weather and WRS working on Nielm over MlbDude2!!! All i have left to do for weather is try the suggestions Salsbst recommended for WRS.

THANKS!, T.

Really nice STV you built. I like most of the options, but I can't get to work the RSS News Feed, don't know why.

I add the news websites news.yahoo and news.com.com and I cant get any of the information, I get error message.

Failed to read from news source http://news.yahoo.com/rss
org.gnu.stealthp.rsslib.RSSException: Expected "</MEAT>" to terminate element starting on line 5

I tried to add news.yahoo.com and news.yahoo.com/rss and will not work.

When I add news.yahoo.com/rss I get this error:
Failed to read from news source news.yahoo.com/rss
java.net.MalformedURLException: no protocol: news.yahoo.com/rss

Can anyone help me with this, please?

Also, when I see the upcoming recordings, I try to click on the show to get the info about the show, but nothing happens, but when I click on the LOW LEFT part of the box, I get the information. Is this normal, or just my computer?

Thank You.

NOTE: The STV is really really good, specially the main menu.

OK Stuart ... I hope you are on the other side of your work project so I can ask some dumb questions!! ... I gave it the ol'college try and thought I followed your directions... So, here is what I did ...

I went to the Accuweather site for the following "Area" and "Metro" Maps for the LA vicinity ...

http://radar.accuweather.com/adcbin/public/local_radar.asp?nxtype=R1&nxsite=kRIV

and

http://radar.accuweather.com/adcbin/public/metro_radar_large.asp?nxsite=vny

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I viewed the source on the maps and pasted the follow in to my weatherconfig.xml using Pittsburgh as a template.

<view name="metro" location="LA" speed="750" delay="3000" maxage="0.25">
<layer type="animation" name="base" href="http://sirocco.accuweather.com/adc_nxmos_640x480c/re2/inmremr_vny.gif" imageType="png"/>
<layer type="image" name="roads" href="http://vortex.accuweather.com/phoenix2/images/common/metro_layers/roads/vny_6x4_roads.gif" imageType="png"/>
<layer type="image" name="cities" href="http://vortex.accuweather.com/phoenix2/images/common/metro_layers/cities/vny_6x4_cities.gif" imageType="png"/>
<layer type="image" name="road markers" href="http://vortex.accuweather.com/phoenix2/images/common/metro_layers/markers/vny_6x4_int.gif" imageType="png"/>
</view>
<view name="area" location="LA" speed="750" delay="3000" maxage="0.25">
<layer type="animation" name="base" href="http://sirocco.accuweather.com/nxss_r1_h_500x620d/r1h/inxr1kvcvs_h.gif" imageType="png"/>
<layer type="image" name="roads" href="http://vortex.accuweather.com/phoenix2/images/common/radar_layers/roads/kvcv_roads.gif" imageType="png"/>

<layer type="image" name="road markers" href="http://vortex.accuweather.com/phoenix2/images/common/radar_layers/markers/kvcv_markers.gif" imageType="png"/>
</view>

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I made sure the Location Element was there ...

<locations >
<location
name="LA"
label="LA">
<weathersourceinfo id="92324"/>
</location>

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And it appeared the Rotan Elemant was already set ...

label="Local Conditions" >
<currentconditions
label="High-Level Info"/>
<rotan
label="Area Radar"
view="area"
local="true"/>
<rotan
label="Metro Radar"
view="metro"
local="true"/>
</submenus>

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After saving the xml file, I launched Sage and selected ¡§LA¡¨ in WRS using the "Change Location" button. After that I selected the "Local Conditions" button and this time the "Area Radar" and "Metro Radar" buttons did show up ƒº ... but ... ƒ¼ and you knew the but was coming ... when either button was selected, I just got a "Loading, Please wait ..." and nothing appears ¡K no maps??

Is there something obvious I am missing?? :confused:

Thanks a lot!, T.

ok, so I am back... and there are 12 pages of 'new' posts, and 4 new pages in this thread... Looks like I have some reading to do :)

I will try to give an update early this week (in between recovering from the flight unpacking, looking after the wife+baby, compressing/watching all the movies I recorded :) .. oh yeah, and catching up with 'real' work :) )

Re comskip -- I have not looked at how it works, so I have no idea how easy it would be to extract it from malore's stv and put it in mine... I also do not use it myself so it is not high on the priorities list...

Good to see you have your priorities straight....:nod:

If you hate commercials you will wonder why you even bothered to watch TV once you have a commerical free environment using comskip... This was the main reason I traded up from my Tivo to Replay. Thanks :goodjob:

I really want to use the features this stv has to offer, but I just can't give up comercial skip now that I've been using it for so long. I love it too much! But I really want xml based menus and everything else you've done. Looks great!

Neil,

I love the custom menu you have for searching for Series premieres.

Can you make on for just plain old Season Premiere?

Or, better yet, can we expand the search capabilities to let us truly search for ANY text anywhere in the data that is downloaded?

Thanks!

PS.... hope you had a nice vacation....

Not sure why I got different reference data from AccuWeather?? Not hard to figure out what to do, but that doesn't matter unless you have the right info plugged in ... :confused:
Nonetheless, plugging yours in covered my area. Thanks for sharing Lynn ... :goodjob:

And Salsbst ... Thanks for a terrific Weather Report Suite. :D

Fooling with this the last few days, my kids are calling me the Weatherman!! :jump:

So for me, Weather and Weather Suite are both sweet in Nielm's STV. Hopefully after his R&R from his R&R he'll be able to make turn his STV from Gold to Platinum!!! ... :p

I don't want to further bombard nielm and sound ungrateful but, for what its worth, the thing thats preventing me from switching to this STV is the mini-OSD from MLBdude.

But no hurries. I'll probably end up trying your STV anyway.

Gaurav

I'll second abasu2003 on that.

nielm - your's is without doubt the most comprehensive STV out there.
I used it for a few weeks and just loved it. However, i missed mlbdude's mini guide so much that i switched back to his STV yesterday. I do miss the WRS and the Malore custom menus and also the remaining disk space display. But the mini guide is a bit too convenient to give up.

I know you have the mini-OSD and a lot more planned so i'll keep an eye on this thread. And yeah!, like many others, i'd like to see commercial advance. Don't know how it works or how good it is but it does sound nice!!

OK, now this is the second time this has happened to me. The only way I got the weather updated the first time was to reboot. The Weather Suite is stuck on weather for last Friday. All the weather, be it forecasts, current weather, radar, etc is stuck. How can I force an update without rebooting? Why is this happening?

RedCoat, somehow the thread that downloads all the data must have gotten hung. I have never seen this happen, but since you report that it has happened, I'll look for places to put timeouts to make sure that such hangs are recovered from.

Nielm ... As promised, working with your new STV on my Sage Client for a some time now I have compiled some of my thoughts, questions and suggestions about an already terrific combo STV ... :thumbup:

1 Can we change the Menu Title of an Internal Screen?
Not without Studio, and I have no plans to include this (it would be a pain and need properties file settings for each individual internal screen name)

2 changing the internal menus 'back to xxx' descriptions
again, no plans to include this... I might add internal screens for each of the 'search by' screens in a later version, so you can work around the search menu limitations.

3. Inconsistent Menu Title Fonts
They should always use the same font, but they will auto-scale, so large menu titles will show as a smaller font...

4 Upcoming Recordings on the Main Menu cuts off date/time
I will look into this -- on my system it only cuts off the date, so you still have the day and the time... There is limited space with the channel logo and the disk space bar...

5/6.Sage TV Recordings Style Options/search menus
Other Mlbdude2 menus may appear in a future version...

7/11 [mlbdude-style] Weather Feed Locks Up Sage
I see that you have fixed this, but in my testing, it never locked up Sage, the Sage logo, the back arrow, the left and home keys still worked

8. Weather Suite precipitaction word wrap
What screen size and base font size do you use?

9. Direct acces to Setup Wizard in Menu Items
may appear in a future version.

10. Sage Logo as back button
It (and the Home key) takes you back to the last dynamic menu page viewed... Pressing it again takes to to the top level main menu.

11 malore Guide3 Locks Up Sage
Ooops... Will look into it... (the back and home keys still work!)

12. Malore Upcoming Movies shows no movies
It always did that for me, I though because I was using XMLTV, not the Sage EPG... Will look into it

Niel,

Thanks for the reply.

I've tried to search in "All Fields" but it appears that All Fields means it will search in all the fields that you can already search in (Title, Description, Actor) but not other fields like "Executive Producer", "Original Air Date", or others which is where stuff like "Season Premiere" come from.

Are you going to be able to browse by station in your STV? I currently keep on system still running mlbdude2 for that feature.... it makes up for not being able to look for Season Preimeres :-)

And lastly, I'm still having problems when deleting using your STV. If you delete a file, it leaves the menu element for the file there until you exit the menu, wait a couple of seconds then come back. Sometimes you have to wait a few minutes. But, it's pretty difficult when you only have a remote and not a mouse, becuase if you've deleted all of them, you can't use the left arrow on the remote to get out of that show and move to another. You're stuck.

Niel, thank you for all the hard work on this. This is by far the best STV I've ever used. If we can fix a few of the bugaboos, the WAF (wife acceptance factor) will be near 100%. My wife, the Weather junkie, is in love with your Weather Suite. I've spent hours and hours customizing it. About the only thing I couldn't get to work right was using radar images from Accuweather premium becuase they use a java script to display the radar maps becuase they do so much --- or to prevent someone frok hijacking them like me :-)

When you feel that your STV is up to "release status" please let me know. I'll be first in like to donate $$$$$.

Best regards.

Stacy

** Bummer … It diminishes slightly the ability to customize a menu item name when the menu that shows up has a different name at it’s top. Less about me and more about the fam. :)

2 changing the internal menus 'back to xxx' descriptions
again, no plans to include this... I might add internal screens for each of the 'search by' screens in a later version, so you can work around the search menu limitations.

** I wish Sage would have just used a generic “Back” since we can not change it. Well, I guess whatever you can do for us on the Search side is a step!

3. Inconsistent Menu Title Fonts
They should always use the same font, but they will auto-scale, so large menu titles will show as a smaller font...

** Nope, weird as it may sound all menu screens take on my selected font for the title, EXCEPT the “Archived SageTV Recordings” screen in your STV? I’ll attach a JPG so you can see what I mean.

4 Upcoming Recordings on the Main Menu cuts off date/time
I will look into this -- on my system it only cuts off the date, so you still have the day and the time... There is limited space with the channel logo and the disk space bar...

** Actually there is plenty of screen space, it’s just that the day and time squish up against the channel logo, truncate and add … ??? I’ll add it to the attachment. Got me??

5/6.Sage TV Recordings Style Options/search menus
Other Mlbdude2 menus may appear in a future version...

** Excellent answer!! ;)

7/11 [mlbdude-style] Weather Feed Locks Up Sage
I see that you have fixed this, but in my testing, it never locked up Sage, the Sage logo, the back arrow, the left and home keys still worked

** Yep, my bad … a few tweaks and the hanging quit!

8. Weather Suite precipitaction word wrap
What screen size and base font size do you use?

** As you have seen with the help of others I have WRS working great! As for the Precip test issue. It appears this one was on me as well, I changed the base font to ERAS BOLD ITC which caused the word wrap … Since Salsbst WRS gave me the ability to change the text I just kept my font and changed “Precipitation” to “Rainfall” and wa-la, no more wrapping?

9. Direct acces to Setup Wizard in Menu Items
may appear in a future version.

** Would pleading make a difference. ;) Thanks to you, I have a “Settings” menu that includes, SageTV Setup (formerly Detailed Setup), Channel Setup, Parental Controls, Update Media Library, Recording Information, System Information and Sleep Mode. The only valuable settings menu worth adding is the Setup Wizard for configuring TV cards. Anyway, if you can sir it would be great.

10. Sage Logo as back button
It (and the Home key) takes you back to the last dynamic menu page viewed... Pressing it again takes to to the top level main menu.

** Hmmm … I thought the silver left arrow next to the Sage Logo took you back one level and the Sage Logo itself was always a way to get home (main menu)?? So, I guess what you are saying it the arrow and logo have one and the same function, correct?

11 malore Guide3 Locks Up Sage
Ooops... Will look into it... (the back and home keys still work!)

** I’ll probably not use this myself, but tried to test everything for you and share my experience as promised.

12. Malore Upcoming Movies shows no movies
It always did that for me, I though because I was using XMLTV, not the Sage EPG... Will look into it

** Again, personally, I’ll probably not use this myself (I like MlbDude2’s implementation), but tried to test everything for you and share my experience as promised.

I might go through and change everything to 'back'

3. Inconsistent Menu Title Fonts on Archived SageTV recordings
Ah, I see. I will have a look at this -- most likely iit is a bug in the Original STV that I inherited :)

4 Upcoming Recordings on the Main Menu cuts off date/time
I know the issue... and will rephase my answer -- the widget I reuse for displaying upcomming recordings is the same one that is used everywhere else, and it expects to have the full screen width... Because it has less than the full screen width, things get squished more than they should... I will look into it.

Not quite.

If you used the 'Guide' button to get from video to Guide and press the '<' button, you will go back to the video screen. If you press the [Sage] button, you will go back to the last dynamic menu page used.
Similarly, if you go: 'top level main menu -> Shecdule recordings Submenu -> search menu -> search for program -> view results -> view airing' , '<' will take you back one step in the above list while [Sage] will take you back to the Schedule Recording submenu.

If you are in a dynamic menu page and press the '<' button you will go up one level (or to the OSD if you are at the top level) If you press the [Sage] button you will always go to the top level menu.

Its a bit inconsistant, but I did not want to make too many changes in the OriginalSTV ouside of the bits that I have added

I had hoped that 1.0 was the release status version :rofl: After 10 years of software engineering, I should know better!

Re deleting... Which menu and which action are you using to delete the file? (mlbdude sage recordings/malore sage recordings/Original sage recordings [grouped/not grouped]) From your comments it sounds like the mlbdude 2-pane version, in which case it is a known bug with the 'old' version, which I plan to replace.

Re browse by station... Added to the todo list :)

Niel,

Yes..... my delete problems are coming from mlbdude's old 2-pane version.

Also another thing I've noticed..... using the same mlbdude old in your stv sometimes the recording screen will show nothing in both the show title box (left side) and one or more individual episodes (right side).

This happened when I upgraded one of my clients to your stv. The episode of "joey" had no show title or episode title, just blanks. Same with one episode of "The Apprentice". The other episode showed up normally.

hmmmm.....

2 / 4 - Appreciate the consideration ...

3 - Appreciate the consideration ... BTW, Just and FYI, this didn't happen in MlbDude2 ...

10 - Ah, I understand ... Actually this isn't really an issue for the server since the remote is my main source of navigation. It's more for the client side. you mean the [<] arrow button next to the sage logo: yes, if you configure the remote to send the 'back/previous page' command, or ALT-LEFT keystroke...
The [Sage] logo itself sends the Home command (== Home key)

Thank you very much for your contribution. This is absolutely everything I am looking for (short of commercial detection :)!

Any thought on if you will implement commercial detection? Is there a way that I can do it myself, via editing your xml w/ known parameters?

I have been unable to set a different background image. I can see that mightyt has successfully done so, so I think it shopuld be possible.

I found the sage.properties parameter and edited it as follows:
ui/background_image=C\:\\Program Files\\Frey Technologies\\SageTV\\spices.jpg
but nothing seems to change. I have completely exited Sage while editing this file. The desired graphic is a jpeg with the above name and location.

Any help with what I am missing here would be greatly appreciated.

It's easier than you'd think Lynn ... and didn't require a mod to the properties file. :cool:

Within folder "C:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV\STVs\OriginalV2" you will find a file called "Background1024.jpg".

I took several of my favorite background photos and opened them in my MS Digital Image Pro software. I saved them with the following parameters;

* Pixel Dimensions = 1024x768 (W x H), and
* Resolution = 96 pixels per inch

Whenever I want to change my background I just copy one of those JPG's in to that folder and rename it to "Background1024.jpg".

Once you restart Sage, there it is ...

BTW, I keep the original Sage background and my alternates in a folder under the OriginalV2 folder as well for easy future access when I get board with the one I am looking at.

Enjoy :D … T.

Yep ... The reason I went with 1024x768 is because the original indicated that to me in its name. I went with 96ppi just to keep the file size and graphic refresh rate down, and as with web graphics, no need to use large amount of pixels if I am not printing the jpg ...

Glad you now have a custom personal background!! :jump:

In case you are curious, a ppi setting is completely irrelevant when talking about a specific resolution size of an image, unless you are actually going to print it. A 1024x768 image at 96 ppi is the same as a 1024x768 image at 2 ppi or 5000 ppi: 1024 pixels x 768 pixels. The ppi setting simply tells the print process what size to print the image at.

Anyway, SageTV is scaling whatever image you give it to fill the space it was told to fill. If it is a background image, you will notice that it still fills the background whether you are running in a tiny window or full screen.

Sorry for the interruption. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming... :)

Hmmm ... Doing some web authoring in the past we had some professional digital photos taken. Our provider went with the lower ppi stating that that is what would be preferable for screen refresh. It appeared to make a difference than when compared to the others with greater pixel depth. I assumed that a Sage background would be treated similarly, thus it would be less taxing with a lower ppi. Nonetheless, if it all works then I guess it doesn't matter much.

This is only a test ... For the next 60 seconds the EBS will be ... Bla, Bla, Bla ... :D

Thanks, T.

Maybe your provider didn't know what they were talking about, or else they conveyed the meaning in a poor manner. :) PPI only makes a difference when you are talking about the size of the image in terms of some measurement, such as inches. So, an 8" x 10" image at 240 ppi is 1920 pixels x 2400 pixels, while at 96 ppi it would be 768 pixels x 960 pixels. If you are talking about the pixel size of the image, ppi is irrelevant -- it is just a setting to say what physical size the image would be if it were to be printed or displayed in a program that scales it according to the ppi setting. Example: if you load an image into MS Word & display it at 100% size, it will be scaled on the page to match the pixel size divided by its ppi setting, thus it is preparing it for its printed size. Oh -- and I might be wrong, but as far as I know, IE doesn't scale by ppi setting. It can be set to scale an image to fit the screen, but that is different.

If you want more details about how ppi affects images, its relationship to a printer's dpi, etc., PM me. Trust me: not all pro photographers know what ppi is & how it affects their images. I know some who only think in inches for image sizes, so ppi means everything & the # of pixels seems irrelevant to them. They are still good photographers, though. :) I'm guessing your provider was thinking in inches, so _resizing_ the image using a lower ppi setting made the pixel count/file size smaller. Simply setting ppi w/o resizing won't change the number of pixels or the file size.

I really didn't mean to get too sidetracked here; my goal was to let you know that 1) the ppi setting doesn't matter here & that 2) SageTV will scale the pixel size to fit its current display size.... and used waaaaay too many words to say it! ;)

Just wondering... I lobe the skin and made my own Menu but the only thing I can't get working is MAME. I know not too many people use it, but does anyone know how to add it back in. I managed to get it into the menu but when I click on MAME it says it can't find it.
I'm not too familiar with XML so how would I go about adding in the right code?
Thanks

Well, I'm not much of a gamer, but added all of the menu options to my XML file, using their Internal Screen Names from Nielm's web page.

http://www.sage-community.org/~nielm/nielm_stv/screens.html

I added "Arcade Games - TEST" this way. Note, I used the weather icon just as a place holder to ensure it worked.

<internalScreenMenuItem
title="Arcade Games - TEST"
icon="STVs\OriginalV2\mlbdude\Default\mm_weather.png"
screen="Arcade Games - TEST"/>

FYI, when I click this menu item a blank screen comes up, but I don't get an error.

I am sure others will comment .... T.

Since I have set up my client system with Nielm's STV I have completely customized the menus to my liking. Only one thing I can not figure out ...

How to I create a "Live TV" menu item? I don't see anything on the "Internal Screen Names" list, nor on the "Controlling SageTV Using Windows Messages" list that I can use. So what do I use to execute this as an XML menu item? I used to be able to enable this on MlbDude2 via the properties file on the main menu and now I have to go to the Guide, click a show and then Watch Now ...

Any thoughts?

Thanks, T.

Ok... some time later... here is version 1.3:

You need to download:
the updated STV zipfile (http://www.sage-community.org/~nielm/nielm_stv/nielm_stv.zip)
the updated Java classes (http://www.sage-community.org/~nielm/nielm_stv/nielm_stv_classes.zip)
and if you have not yet installed the Mlbdude2 STV, you will also need to download the updated icons file (http://www.sage-community.org/~nielm/nielm_stv/nielm_stv_icons.zip)

Some of the additions are untested -- CC and commercial skip: I don't use these myself, but added them by popular demand... I hope they work, but I guess I will find out soon enough if they don't.

Oh man, I can't wait to try this! I've been waiting for the commercial advance, so hopefully it works. :) Still using Malore's (VERY GOOD!) stv. But am missing weather and RSS...

What a great effort this is! Both on the original content and the collaborative content.

This is the first skin that I can honestly say has everything *I* wanted in a skin. Should be fun configuring it! The documentation looks easy enough (I've done my share of XML in the past).

I'll report back

ok, don't want to sound the least bit ungrateful so think of this as a completely idle question:

THANK YOU!

I just wanted to say once again, your STV is the bomb. This is pretty much everything that I want (w/ the newely included commercial skip!).

Not to discount the hard work that the others have done at all. Without their hard work, you would not have compiled all these great options together (or so quickly!).

Thank you mlbdude, malore, neilm (and others which im probably not aware of at this point)!

This is from dooferlad on page 4 of this thread:
I am getting the error "failed to load sagemenureader class" when loading this STV. Any ideas?
I am having the same issue. Any ideas on what we are doing wrong?

Installation steps Ive taken:

#1 Unzipped the files where told. Also I unzipped nielm.stv into the OriginalV2 folder.. are all the unzipped files supposed to be in there or just the SageTv folder?

#2 Modified sage properties line to wizard/widget_db_file=C\:\\Program Files\\Frey Technologies\\SageTV\\STVs\\OriginalV2\\nielm.stv

#3 Modified the weatherconfig to include chicago
<location
name="Chicago"
label="Chicago">
<weathersourceinfo id="USIL0225"/>

I think that about covers it. What am I missing?

If you don't have a file named:
c:\program files\frey technologies\sagetv\net\sf\sageplugins\sagemenu\SageMenuReader.class

then you probably didn't extract the Java class files correctly.

Ok, without reading a 12 page post on com skip, what all do I need to install to make that work on this STV? I'm also gonna have to set up my server to use UNC shares for my recorded files (Grrr, KNEW I should have done that to start with).

Also, what do you need to add to the system to support the auto-compression? I'd like to compress some of the kids shows...

Wow Nielm, this looks really promising. I'm still using Malore's skin but it hasen't been updated in some time so I'm kinda tempted to try something new, even though I really like Malore's work!

Do you think the installation routine of your skin will be combined and made easier at some point or is that simply not possible and I should just live with the installation the way it is?

Let me know :-) It might be worht waiting a little bit if you're gonna include some kind of installation routine.

1. Commercial advance works great for me.

2. Love being able to configure all of the menus. NEAT.

3. Already setup the weather suite, also cool.

4. Setup a number of RSS feeds. Works great.

One note, looks like in the DETAILED SETUP -> ENHANCEMENTS section there are TWO listings for "Malore Menus Options". Only one of the two works (the bottom one).

BUT ... like others, my thanks is way overshadowed by my appreciation for your amazing commitment to the development of the ultimate STV. :thumbup:

You deserve a ton of credit for turning around some VERY cool updates since you returned from vacation only a short while ago. I can not wait to update my system!! I almost want to take the day off from work ... :D

Before I get started Questions ...

1 - Would you suggest as a best practice to install MlbDude2 and then Nielm 1.3 over it? Is that the simplest way? I am going to hold a copule of brown bags at work and want to make an install recommendation.

2 - When using Commercial Skip ...

White94 said ... Cobra What am I missing with commercial skip? I can't seem to find anywhere to manually start comskip on a recording. I used to have it working great in the commercial advance beta.

Then ...

Never mind... it appears you need to be using the Malore recordings guide.

So, does this mean it will not work with MlbDude2's 2-Pane Recordings screen??

Does the web browser, RSS reader, or weather work using the PVR-350 as your only output?

redman

Weather and RSS reader works fine, as long as you don't need to launch a browser (i.e. Airport delays - or click on a RSS feed for details)

The output on the PVR-350 will only output the sage screen, so no Web browser.

Of course it took your brain to show that !

I seem to have comskip working (with some issues relating to spaces in folder names) with the mlbdue recording view. The controls are not as accessible but seem to be sufficient if you don't need to separate some program's behavior from others.

Background Commercial Processing is enabled on the Malore Custom Menu Settings screen which is independent of the recordings view style. It is also available on the Detailed Setup Enhancements screen.

Thanks Lynn ... OK, I see "Background Commercial Processing: Disabled" in the Detailed Setup > Enhancements > Malore Menus Items. I have never used ComSkip, but I assume if I enable this it will automatically comskip all mpeg2 files in the background.

So are you saying I should enable this and when I play a show from the MlbDude2 2-pane recordings menu that I will be able to skip though the commercials?

This parser would have to be different for every news source, and some pretty tricky coding -- which is why I didn't do it!

T. You cannot start commercial detection on individual shows from anywhere except Malores Sage Recordings menu (which you can add a direct link to in the menu.xml if you want so you have direct access to both SageRecordings screens).

Commercial skip on playback will work from wherever you started playing back the recording.

Got Comskip working great, but for some reason can't seem to get the compression working. Never see anything produced in my pickup directory. Anybody got any ideas?

** EDIT ** Got it working, silly me must have edited my properties file when Sage was just asleep not closed... Working fine now.

Another question tho, can you use Comskip & the compression on the same program? Will the player jump to the correct place if the file is compressed after the commercial file is created? Guess I'll find out shortly, hopefully it'll work :p.

** EDIT 2 ** Apparently Comskip & Compression are mutually exclusive. Wonder if the code for comskip could be added to the library module? If it worked on the compressed AVI files, that'd be awesome...

I'm also getting some major blocking on the compressed file, guess I'll ask about that on the compression thread...

Why are there 2 weather buttons (one says weather, and one says weather suite)??

The weather one does nothing except go to a blank screen and says looking up or downloading information, but never comes back with any, so it just hangs there (not lock up, but never gets any info) The other one works ok, and I managed to FINALLY get my local zip code to work (what a pain in the ....:eek: ) I would adjust one file, nothing, then one file I couldn't adjust at all, until I right clicked and finally edited it, then the program ALWAYS put washington DC first, so I always had to go in and select my area. I finally got rid of all the other areas, and fixed that problem.

Now I don't have any (actually never did) local maps showing up, like they were for DC and the other locations that came by default.

Also, any INSTRUCTIONS on how to customize menus? I cant figure it out, I'd like to delete some stuff from showing up that I don't use or want.

I like the idea of the comercial skip, but does it mean that I have to use MLDUDES skin to use it? what does his skin look like? (the recording screen)

This skin is pretty good, but I have noticed a few new glithes, my show indicators lose parts of the buttons just about every day. The little arrows for play or time indicator disappear partially or flicker.

I also can barely barely read the text on some of the "guides", and as usual, I can't seem to get them to work. What do I need to do to use them?

Stupid questions, but this is partially why I wish I had studio, to make it as detailed, or as non-detailed as I like.

PS.....THIS STV KICKS A$$, if I could "clean it up, it would be perfect!

Good job!:goodjob:

Try this. I've only been using the STV a couple of days, but was able to customize EVERYTHING based on the information in these links. Ok, not quite everything. MLBDUDE and Malore specific features are describing their respective threads.

Hope that helps!!!

Read through this thread ... there was a lot of dialog about weather and weather suite issues.

And yes read the JasonJoel recommended links ...

Oh ... when you make yours perfect, be sure to post it ...

Why are there 2 weather buttons (one says weather, and one says weather suite)??
From the feature list of the first page:
Weather reporting suite with full Weather.com integration, multiple location support and ability to display animated images
Mlbdude-2 weather viewer for backward compatibility (needs mlbdude2 STV installed)

The Weather report suite is powerful, but with that power comes the complicated customisation. You are free to create a WRS configuration GUI to generate the XML files if you want -- I have been busy on other things.

The malore guides font size is cusomisable....

Compskip can be started for individual files from the MALORE sage recordings menu (which you either can have set as the default sage recording screen, or set up a custom menu item that links directly to it).

I don't know what the 3 malore Guides do either -- I just included them, but don't use them... look at the instructions for malore menus.

They allow you to make custom guides. Say you like SciFi shows/movies. You can rename one of the custom guides to SciFi then setup a filter to show only upcoming shows that are catagorized as SciFi. Then set it to group by title. Use the 'options' button/command (Esc key) to bring up the customization menu from within one of these menus.

Edit:
It looks like with the fabulous addition of menus.xml, that renaming menus from the options menu no longer works. To rename these guides you now have to edit the menus.xml

There is a slight problem with 2 tuner cards. It's showing that I have double the harddrive space remaining as I should.

Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks,

Are you sure it's related to multiple tuner cards? I have two PVR-250's in my SageTV server and it reports the correct disk usage.

Nope not sure at all but All I've done is install 2 250-pvr cards then sagetv2 then this stv and now it's showing me having double the harddrive....

Unless the harddrive fairy came in last night when I was sleeping and gave me a new one... (After careful inspection the drive is still 80 gigs and not 160...)

I just assumed it was to do with the 2 tuner cards but I guess it's something else. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Do you have any network drives mounted?
What do you have set for your video directory(s)? Could you have the same drive listed twice perhaps?

That's all I got...

Wow thanks for your help I guess I'll stick to one folder for videos.

Thanks!

You might also try the "use only" for each folder. That might report the correct disk space....

I dont think you guys here get the picture. There is NOTHING in any of those links (wich I printed out every page to use to set up this STV) that tells me WHAT TO DO STEP BY STEP with the menus, no examples, no NOTHING. I'm not a programmer, don't have a clue about XML, JXT,JHS or what ever you guys call all these plugins.

I am so lost as to WHY I need MLDUDES stuff when I don't want his features, I didn't install any thing from his STV, and it seems to work just fine.

I'll admit, I'm not the sharpest tool in the PC programming shed, which is why AGAIN, I feel more people should have access to this studio.

Neilms STV is the closest to what I'm looking for, but I still have NO CLUE on several features, have asked for help, have been told to "read the posts" which I have and my answers STILL are not there.

Please try to see it from my stand point. Most of the tweaking I need to do is BEYOND my capability right now, It's hard to do anything if you don't know the TERMS and the way things work. Telling me I can "customize" my menus is great, but where do I start? You guys assume I know as much as you do, and I'm sure I'm not the only who is lost or has these questions. I may be the only one it seems to post my concerns. :nono:

> I'm not a programmer, don't have a clue about XML,
In the menu configuration page (http://www.sage-community.org/~nielm/nielm_stv/menu.html) there is a link to an XML tutorial which explains what XML is and what the terms tag and attribute mean.

In the Wiki, there is a page with examples of adding new screens new submenus and new programs. (http://www.sage-community.org/index.cgi/wiki/NielmStvMenu).

With that and the delivered menu.xml as an example pretty much everyone else here have figured out what to do...

OK Broderp ... Know that you can do this !!! :D ...

I am not a programmer either and I was able to make this happen to my satisfaction. Just have a little patience, be prepared to look at what you are starting with; such as the menu.xml file. Open it, print it, stare at it for a while, look for patterns or things that repeat and apply logic. Once you get it, you will see that it's not all that bad ...

If you PM me your email, I would be happy to send you some or the methods and sample docs that helped me to get what I wanted. I am still no XML programmer and could not do what these guys here do, but I have my HAPPY Menus!!! :) :) :)

Oh ... and reading the links won't hurt either ...

The Weather option comes from mlbdude's STV. If you never installed it, it will not work in nielm's STV.

I'm only guessing, but I don't think that Studio will be the magic bullet to solve all of your problems? It will probably help you design custom menus and screens, but it seems that most of the advanced options being developed are being written in XML and JAVA among other things. So Studio will not help you to configure things like the weather suite, or video compression, or sommercial skip.

Just wanted to thank you for fixing the fonts on your menus. I am now more than happy to use your stv. Only change i needed to make was to tell Sage to use Firefox instead of Opera. Once I figure out how to change the preset cities in the weather section and I am set. Your continued efforts make this a better and better Media Center every day.

I have just tried this STV. I really like the weather and the layout. I am having speed problems though. I have an AMD 2500 w/ 512 MB RAM. I am using a PVR-350 output and I get huge lags/pauses between commands. Has anyone else seen this? It is unusable right now. The Malore skin has no problems...although I see this at times with the beta Malore skin with Comskip.

Thanks!

nielm,

Can you check for any differences in how comskip is launched in your STV? It seems to work fine if it runs automatically, but trying to run it via Malore's recordings list and it doesn't seem to be able to find the .ini file.

If it's a problem with comskip, I'll be happy to fix it, but I don't know what to fix since I don't know how it is being launched.

Thanks,
Jere

Interesting... for me it's the other way around. It runs fine when run manually, but won't start automatically. When I was running the beta CA STV it worked great both ways. In fact, after two nights all of my recordings had been "comskipped." Now, even after running it for a couple of weeks, I still have about 25% of my recordings with no CA.

Jere_Jones
09-27-2004, 09:50 AM
Please note that if comskip doesn't find any commercials it will still produce a .txt file but it will be empty. If it's empty, the list won't show [CA], but since a .txt exist it won't rerun comskip either.

Jere

White94Cobra

I didn't realize that (although it would be nice if it showed CA anyway just so we don't manually run it again). While I didn't check for empty .txt files I did run it manually on a few of the shows and it did find and mark commercials. Some of the shows were recorded over a month ago so comskip should have run on them automatically by now.

I can still manually comskip stuff and most of the time it's very accurate. I've noticed when it isn't accurate (maybe 10% of the time), it isn't even close. Many times it either doesn't mark the whole commercial (it skips the first two but not the last three) or it is accurate through the first half of the show but no commercials are marked at all in the second half. I can't wait to try the new version.

Jere_Jones
09-27-2004, 12:52 PM
In addition to my previous post:

If an empty .txt file exists, the option to run commercial skip should not show up on the options menu. So... if the show is old and the option to run comskip is there, then something went wrong. Go ahead and run it.

Also, you can (via the options menu) change the sort options to "one group" and then run "Commercial Detect All" and it should run comskip on all shows that don't already have a .txt file.

Jere
