While everybody is constantly talking about HDTV support, I'm surprised no one has mentioned DVB support since it's the the predominant way of getting television these days in the rest of the world. There'll probably be more interest of the release of my new guide: Digital Satellite on HTPC (http://www.htpcgear.net/sat/index.html) Since the streams are all MPEG-2 already it would fit perfectly with SageTV. And development shouldn't be to hard either since there are opensource dll files for windows that do most of the hard work of interfacing to these cards and setting up the graphs in DirectShow.
Anyways something to keep in mind for your long long term plans

If any of these cards have the ability to record in Program Stream or interleaved PES packet format, then it's possible to integrate them with the currently available build of SageTV.
This can be done using the network encoder feature.
If ANYONE is interested in integrating DVB-S/T/C support for Sage, post it here. All that is needed is to implement a TCP/IP server that responds to some simple start/stop/tune commands that are used to control the recording of the card. Everything else SageTV will handle already. :D
Technotrend (manufacturer of the Hauppauge/Siemens DVB cards) has released an API to access their cards. The API should address the channel changes.
Here's a doc about their stream format (http://www.technotrend.de/download/av_format_v1.pdf )

Hi!
I would also like to see these cards supported in SageTV.

You should know the EPG is broadcast with the DVB stream. One thing less to worry about! Having used DVB myself before, I can say having your software available would be very welcome news for users in Europe.

I live in the UK and one of the main reasons I'm building a HTPC is so I can access the Freeview Terrstrial DVB channels. The Hauppauge Nova T PCI supports it, unfortunately neither ShowShifter or SnapStream support that cards functionality. If SageTV could provide that functionality, I'd be signing up immediately.

If anybody wants to write the support for the card, I'll give you all the information you need to do it (from Sage's standpoint).
Essentially if you can make a simple capture application for the card (playback not required, I already handle all that), then you can write Sage support for it.

I'm very interested in this. I have considered buying a PVR-250 and using the svideo out of the Nexus to the svideo in on the PVR in order to use SageTV. A very bad workaround but it would work.

Check out the network encoders description in our developers section on our support site. What someone can do is write an application that implements a TCP/IP server that handles the same protocol that is used for network encoding. If you would like more details on the protocol, email support@freytechnologies.com

I cannot program myself but I have posted a link to this thread on some DVB forums. Hoepfully I can stir up some interest. I know progdvb has ip streaming capabilities and can be controlled remotely.
Is it possible, although not as pretty, to simply run a dvb app minimized and change it's channels via command line from sagetv and connect the DVB card svideo output to the PVR-250 input?

Did this end up getting anywhere? I've ordered a DVB-S card to play with and it would be real nice if it was usable through Sage.

I am interested in programming this support. I have ordered a Technotrend budget DVB-T card that hopefully will artive this week. I have emailed support@freytechnologies.com and would like to get the information i need to implement this.
Also if anybody have links to active DVB forums I am very interested in them.

Anders, I look forward to hear about your results. I have also thought about try to program this but I lack time at the moment. For me I'm interested in DVB-S but DVB-T can be of interest as well. Where did you order the Technotrend card from? If you want some help, I live only 90km from you.

Great. I might contact you when I have started programming. Hopefully my code should work for all of the budget line cards, C, T and S, at least that what it looks like in the SDK.
I ordered my card from http://www.dvbshop.tv/. I got a confirmation email that he sent the card last friday so I am hopefully getting it some time this week.

I revieved my card last week and has started programming. I dont have any results yet though.
I have not heard from Sage about the protocol to talk with SageTV. I guess they have had other things to do the last couple of weeks...

Hello.
I can now controll my card and tune to a station. I can also get data from the card and for exampel save the sound to a file that plays in Winamp. The next step is to convert the Transport stream I get from the card to a program stream that Sage understands.
If anybody (Narflex?) have any information on this I would appreciate it since the standard specification is a little hard to read.
I have not got the information from Sage about the interface but I am working on the TS-PS conversion right now so it is not holding me back (yet).

Sounds like its coming on well.
Did a bit of googling..
The Linux DVB driver may give you useful information on how to convert the TS to a PS.
These links may be of help:

It looks like it was not my TS->PS conversion that was the problem. The TS stream I got from the card with the TT SDK is not ok!
So I have now switched tactics and use DVBCore.dll instead of the SDK from Technotrend. And in very short time I now have a litte test program that can tune to a station and record a correct (playable) mpg file.
Next step for me would now be to make this test program to take commands from Sage. I will write a new letter to the support address about this and when I get the info about this I guess that I can have the first beta out in a week or two.

I went down this path over the holidays when I started to write a network encoder for my Nova-T card.
Unfortunately for me, DVBCore offers limited DVB-T bandwidth support. I live in Australia, where the bandwidth is 7mhz, and in all the versions of DVBCore I've tested to date I can't get it to tune. If you live in a country that uses 8mhz for DVB-T bandwidth you'll be OK.
I wrote to Saar in an effort to hopefully get him to enable this support. His reply was that he hasn't written DVBCore and MyTheatre to specifically support DVB-T. The fact that it works for some DVB-T cards is a happy coincidence mainly due to common SDK's between the DVB-T, DVB-C and DVB-S products from specific vendors. He plans to add 'official' support for DVB-T sometime this year, as he doesn't have any DVB-T hardware.
If you'd like to add your request for extra DVB-T support to mine, perhaps I might get the DVB-T bandwidth support I need!
Cheers

I noticed the lack of bandwidth settings for the DVBCore but I just thought that it was handled automatically.
I will continue with DVBCore for now so that I get something that works as soon as possible. DVBCore supports more cards also so it is possible to use it for satellite and cable with a lot of cards.
In which countrys is 7MHz used? In Sweden we have 8MHz.
Have you solved the problem with incorrect TS from the TSFilter? I have heared that it is poosible to use TSRecordRead instead and get a complete TS that way but my experiments was not successful.

Hello
I have now my first beta for a DVB Server. I use DVBCore for this and it is not intended for DVB-T and does not support a bandwidth of 7MHz. Therefore it probably wont work in some places. It works fine for me in with the FTA channels in Sweden.
Note that tis is a very early beta and you might get problems if you install it on your computer.
The files can be found at
SDVBCoreRecorder.zip (http://www.nolberger.se/SDVBCoreRecorder.zip)
Please report back if you try this.

Hi,
Been lurking here for quite a while but freeview was basically a necessity for me so was holding off taking the plunge until this was a feature of sage. Anyway, i got tired of waiting and this thread inspired me (big thanks to Anders btw).
I can report that this program works pretty well for me (so far, touch wood) and attatched is the .ini file i have created for receiving freeview from the Emley Moore transmitter (you need to change the frequencies of the muxes if receiving from a different transmitter).
Managed to get it integrated with XMLTV from tv_grab_uk_rt (which has all freeview channels) so just getting ready to start enjoying the great features i've been reading about :)
(Using the 2.0.13 beta by the way)

A new version is now available at SDVBCoreRecorder.zip (http://www.nolberger.se/SDVBCoreRecorder.zip) . No big changes but a fix in threading that should make it a little more stable.
As for what card that is supported look at http://www.dvbcore.com/. But remember that I do not tune Satellite cards so cable cards and the Nova-T (possibly others) in countrys with 8MHz bandwidth should work.

Hey fredpery
I've also have been holding off on trying, mainly because I haven't had the time..
Now, as it looks as if you, and of course AndersNolberger have done the hard work (THANKS!), I think I shall dive in head first!
So.. My question for you is - where do I find the frequencies of the muxes for my transmitter? Oh, and is there an easy way to find out which transmitter I'm using..?
Thanks again!
fredpery
03-05-2004, 02:59 AM
Hey Taylormadearmy,
If you don't know which transmitter you're using, probably the easiest way to find out the frequencies of the muxes is through the channel scan window in the original Hauppauge/TechnoTrend software. (Assuming you have it all set up and working correctly of course).
Just go into the set up and note the frequency being used for the folowing channels (you may need to click the extended information (>>) button to see frequency information):
BBC One (Mux 1)
ITV 1 (Mux 2)
Five (Mux A)
BBC Four (Mux B)
Sky Travel (Mux C)
The Hits (Mux D)
Now just enter these in order into the transponder section of the .ini i posted nad hopefully away you'll go.
Hope this helps,
Fred

Just a note to say that the new version of dvbcore ( included with MyTheatre 3.12 ) works for DVB-T on bandwidth frequencies other than 8 mhz..
It doesn't appear to work with UHF Channels though. I can't pick up SBS here in Oz.

ok - I'm giving this a go..
Bare in mind I'm a complete newbie with sage, so please forgive any silly questions..
So - I have installed v1.4 on a machine that has only a DVB-T card.
I have fredpery's ini file.
I have added the lines mmc/ecoder/12345
and mmc/encoder/12345/encoding_host=localhost:6969 to the sage.properties file.
I then have started SDVBrecorder and sage - and I get the setup wizard.
It asks for Video capture device - I choose my "hauppauge WINTV PVR PCI on localhost:6969"
I then click on - I dont have an access code.
It then asks me to "select the input below that you have this source connected to on your PC's capture card" - unfortunately I have nothing to click on here...
Any ideas whats going wrong?
Thanks!!

Anyone have any info on this?
I have tried on a Sage 1.4 that already have a PVR250. And also on a Sage 2.0 that dont have any other cards. In both cases i got the inputs from a PVR to choose from (at least as I remembered it).
Do you have two encoders set up in you properties file? The original that does not exists physically and the network encoder? In the Sage 2 setup I only changed the encoding_host setting on the existing encoder before starting Sage for the first time.
Did you get any debug info in SDVBCoreRecorder during setup?
--------
The new DVBCore is not available separately right now so i dont now if I am alowed to use it. I have written to Saar (DVBCore) and asked but I have not gotten any answer yet.

Also you should set up XMLTV (if you live outside the USA) .

I don't know. But, this is kind of disturbing to me. What bothers me is that anything already built for network encoding could get broken very easily with a new SageTV release. All they would have to do is release a new SageTV and SageRecorder with total encryption or something and we're skrewed all together.
I WAS planning on adding the protocol to a capture tool I wrote that would have allowed capturing from just about any "standard" windows capture/tuner card. This would have allowed somebody to use an All-In-Wonder, a web cam, firewire capture and of course DV sources.
Example, need an extra capture board for the night? Plug your extra Set Top box into your DV camers and you're set. I've got a bunch of software encoders that could have been put online strictly for capture purposes and they would have worked just fine in this capacity.
Oh well.

I must say this is a great forum - thanks for all your help guys.
A few more questions..
1. Is there likely to be Official support for DVB? I'd love to know b4 I part with my money if this DVB support will a) become official, or b) disappear as the server protocol becomes unsupported. I have tried all the competitors products - and this really seems to be the best solution at the moment.. If ony it stays that way..
2. fredpery - Do you have any trouble with some shows being the wrong aspect ratio - or even just some parts within shows. The News is a prime example of this - often when they go to footage away from the main news the aspect ratio is all wrong - also Channel 5 oftern seems to be a prime example of this. What MPEG2 decoder are you using?
3. Would SDVBRecorder work with multiple PCI DVB cards? Also how about USB - I have a DEC-2000T usb box (basically another Hauppage marked Technotrend Unit).

First so that everybody knows, I am not connected to Frey Technologies in any way. My DVB server is only a hobby project of mine.
I am also very interested in the future of the protocol I am using right now. It would be nice if someone from Frey would clarify what it means that "Sage has decided to stop giving that protocol away. It's no longer supported." Will the protocol be protected so that I cant use it for my server? Or does it just means that Frey wont answer any queations about it? (And will there be official support for DVB?)
As for the lockups in the DVB server. I think that my current version works better. I will make it available soon, there are some more things I want to include first.
SDVBCoreRecorder is based on DVBCore.dll and I dont think that it will work with more than 1 card. The recorder only supports one. But you could have several computers with a card in each.
(The aspect ratio is possible to choose in the settings and you can map shortcut buttons to the aspects you use the most. Do a search in the forum for more information.)
Hey Anders
It is great that you're still working on DVB support!
Are you able to grab the EPG info from the cable signal with your program?
It would be a lot smarter that using the XML tools available.
I will get my DVB-C card up and running in a few weeks and are looking forward to using your plugin.
Keep up the good work Anders!
PS: Now we just need Sage to step in and answer these simple questions.
I just read on the DVBCore homepage that it supports "EPG Info gathering" so it should be possible to implement in SDVBCoreRecorder?
MyTheater supports multiple DVB cards, so I would think DVBCore does that too.

Hi Anders
Thanks for the work you are putting in - its certainly appreciated! It really woul be a shame id Frey shut the door on this protocol and leave us out in the cold.
I am aware of the ability to change aspect ratios - however there seem to be some aspect ratio's in some shows that often are diplayed incorrecrtly what ever aspect ratio I choose . If I choose 'fill' for example, the picture appreads ''Tall and Thin".
Has no one else seen this..?

I believe this is a DVB issue as I only have ever seen this using DVB - and then only on certain channels with certain broadcasts.

A new release of SDVBCoreRecorder is available at http://www.nolberger.se/sage/default.htm
This version is compatible with the new DVBCore found in MyTheatre v3.12. I can not include that version in the release due to licensing rules but you can find the download for MyTheatre at http://www.dvbcore.com.
Everything is much more stable with the new DVBCore so I really recomend that you download that.
I have not checked the version included in the new 3.19 beta so I can not say if it works.
The source for my server is also available at the same place as the program. It is programmed in Delphi 6.
Enjoy
Anders
It's really good that you're still working on the SDVBCoreRecorder Anders !
I tried it but can't get it to work properly.
SageTV finds my DVB-C card but I can't get the channels working.
I'm not sure how to fill out the Transponder and Channel info.
Could you help please?
I have a cable.ini file from ProgDVB that works in MyTheatre too.
Here is an example from that:
...
107=143000,V,6875000,-1,0,0
108=156000,V,6875000,1030,120,97
109=474012,V,6875000,1010,100,97
110=482012,V,6875000,1050,100,98
...
How do I use that in SDVBCoreRecorder?
My cable company uses:
Symbolrate: 687500
QAM: 64
Bandwith: 8MHz
Thanks for all your great work so far!

Hi Andres
I'm still having little luck with the latest RC's and SDVBrecorder - does it work for you?
When sage starts it all chugs a long very slowly as SDVB is using 100% CPU. If I lower SDVB's priority I can get Sage to start viewing TV - and I get some debug out of SDVB:
NOOP 21:48:07
NOOP 21:48:07
NOOP 21:48:07
START Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II Capture TV Tuner|1|4611684934810065329|E:\Video\TV\PearlHarbour-1002179-2.mpg|Great 21:48:42
NOOP 21:48:47
GET_FILE_SIZE E:\Video\TV\PearlHarbour-1002179-2.mpg 21:48:47
Please report this to Anders:
GET_FILE_SIZE E:\Video\TV\PearlHarbour-1002179-2.mpg
However, as SDVB cpu usage stays so high sage efectively hangs - have you got any ideas that may help me?
Thanks!

Did some more playing - it definitely is the RC builds that break SDVB for me - I rolled back to 2.0.15 and it works ok - any ides what has been done to breaak it?
On a sad note I got official conformation from Sage support that they have no plans as yet to support DVB:
"I'm sorry to say, but we currently have no plans to support DVB.
"
and on the issue of supporting plugins like SDVB:
"Sorry, but it's the same situation. We are not currently supporting it. We
realize there is a huge market in the UK. It's something we are always
working on, but we can't offer any kind of guarantee on whether we will
support it later or not."

I didn't realize you already had a plugin working. :) I've been a little busy. If the author (or whoever can make the changes) wants to contact me with the problems they're having I can tell them what's changed (the "GET_FILE_SIZE filename" call is a new one that was added in RC3). betatest@freytechnologies.com

I am sorry I have not looked at this until now. I have myself changed computer and I now have problems with jerky playback with my DVB server.
On my server at http://www.nolberger.se/sage/ are a new version that works with RC3. Try it and report back how it works for you.

Hey Anders:
You da man BTW! Hey, Im tempted to buy a DVB card but am unshure on how well you have your cool plugin working with sage. Can you give me a general feeling on this? I dont mind waiting and working through bugs, I just dont want to buy a card which will likely be a boat anchor if I cant get it to run semi-stable with sage.

There still are some problems with the server and I do not recomend anyone to buy any hardware to use with this. I can only tune with some DVB-T cards and not any cable or satellite cards. There also is a few bugs that I dont know if I am going to fix.
I will probobly wait until the release of v 2.0 of Sage before I continue with development of my server.

Hi Andres
Ignore my last post! It works fine - it stopped working for me as my hard disk k:\ stopped working :( between reboots. Howver, new disk in and all seems fine with RC3. Will let you know how stable it looks when have been using it for a day or so.
Couple of feature requests for when you start to develop it some more:
1. Warning when no hard disk is present ;)
2. Maybe an option in the ini file for SDVB to launch Sage once it has started.
3. Slighly harder - dont know how feasilble - how about simulating multiple cards by doing a mux record...?
Thanks again!!

Hi Anders
All is now working well for me. So far seems rock solid.
I also fixed a previous problem I mentioned - funny aspect ratios. Turns out it is a Hauppauge driver problem with DirectX 9. IF you replace quartz.dll with an older version everything is displayed correctly - however you then loose the ability to use VMR.
I contacted Hauppauge about this and they said new drivers should be coming out any day now (2.17) that will fix this.
If and when you have anything new to test let me know and I'll try it out!
Thanks!!!

Thanks to Peter Brennan for changes to support DVB-T/DVB-C Bandwidth and QAM. ( Requires version of dvbcore.dll from MT 3.12 )
There are no other changes so if you dont live in Australia I dont think there are any adventages in upgrading.

Well I would like to get DVB-S working, though I haven't coded a single line of delphi in my life.
Would you be willing to work together to get it working?
Could you at least tell me what parts of the DVB-S interface to DVBCore aren't there?
Thanks
Ok, I have DVB-S working with Sage TV.
Modified the SDVBCoreRecorder source, so it can change the channels with AVbroadcaster plugin.
-make an entry "SageTV' in the Favorites in the mytheatre database.
move the channels you like to that entry (take same channels as in your XMLTV file). Number your channels.
- Close mytheatre and copy the channels.mdb to the SDVBCoreRecorder directory.
- make a directory plugins in the SDVBCoreRecorder directory and copy the AVbroadcaster plugin in this directory.
- Start SDVBCoreRecorder and setup the AVbroadcaster plugin.
(default port 8000)
-Start SageTV and setup the channels, numbering must be the same as in the favorites/SageTV from mytheatre database.
That is all, works for me !!!
(I have a Skystar2, with the latest drivers v4.2.11)
Can't post the modified SDVBCoreRecorder.exe in this forum,
If anyone is interested I can mail it to AndersNolberger if I can get his e-mail adres.

I am setting up my HTPC and plan on using sage and am basing the the setup from a DVB-S card. I must say I am new to the DVB scene but am an expert in HTPC setup and computer hardware and programming. I guess I have a few questions for yoja.
Does the setup you are describing basically give you all of Sage's functionality (Pausing, Recording, Timeshifting etc.) with the DVB-S card?
Does the software provide support for multiple satellites using a motor or switch that conforms to the DiSEqC standard?
Could please just elaborate more on the basic functionality of the setup you are using?
I am sorry if these questions are basic or obvious as I noted I am a bit new to the DVB scene. Thanks for all the great work so far.

AndersNolberger

If the only thing you see in SDVBRecorder's debug window is noop then Sage is not trying to tune with it. The problem should be with channel setup or the line up for the tuner. Do you have any other capture cards? Try to disable it to see if Sage choose DVB instead and make sure that there are channels configured for the card.

I currently have DVB recorder working with a single DVB-T card. I will shortly be turning the pc into a server and adding a new client, to run sageTV. I'm sure this will work as DVB recorder is already running as a network tuner. However I would really like to add a second tuner, on to the same pc as the first, and so have multituner support for DVB-T. Is this possible with DVBRecorder or DVB Core.
Can it be the same tuner (Tecnotrend) or will it not work at all.

Is there a list of supported cards somewhere that this plugin can use? Is it possible to use a DVB card and a PVR-350 on the same machine or do you have to have the DVB card on a seperate machine to use it as a network device?
AndersNolberger

The server use DVBCore from MyTheatre 3.12 so it should work with all DVB-T and mayby DVB-C cards that is supported by that.
I dont know about the DVB-S modifications by Yoja.
As for multiple tuners. I have not tried it but you should be able to install two instanses of SDVBCoreRecorder with different .ini files. In it you can set which device to use and at what IP-port it shold communicate with Sage. But as I said I have not tried this since I only have one card myself.

I'll post my configuration when I get home tonight. I'm going to schedule a bunch of various recordings overnight and see how it goes. but for live viewing with multiple clients, working just as well as a pvr250.
The only issues I have is when you load that SDVBCoreRecorder , it prompts you for a selection of which driver type you would like to load. This makes it so you can't automatically load the sdvbcorerecorder on windows startup without having to interact with it.
Once I get everything working the way I want, I'll post a How-To.
The only thing about this is, does sage serve up the mpeg stream as delivered by SDVBCORERECORDER? or does it try to re-encode the mpeg? I hope it's the former and that it is only serving the native mpeg stream and not degrading the signal by further re-encoding. if that is the case, then the quality/file size settings shouldn't ahve an effect right?
AndersNolberger
11-29-2004, 11:33 PM
What message does SDVBCoreRecorder prompts with at startup. It should not do that. But as I have stated before I have not tried the modified version for DVB-S.
Sage is not reencoding anything. SDVBRecorder is saving the mpgeg file to disk and Sage is not changing this file in any way. So it is correct that the quality settinngs in Sage is not used at all.
I am interested in what cards you all are using. Are there BDA drivers available for them. I am thinking of writing a new verson of the recorder that use BDA but unfrotunately it would not support as many cards as DVBCore does. But I am not happy with the files created by DVBCore, they dont play nicely in all players. The tests I have done with BDA makes "better" mpeg files.
Also how many is interested in DVB support at all? Are there any users of my SDVBCoreRecorder?
If there are a DVB-S user in Linköping Sweden that is interested in helping make DVB support for Sage or a Delphi programming DVB-S user somewhere in the rest of the world, please contact me and I will se what I can do... But no promises at this time,

Firstly Foollo thanks for willingness to write out a 'How to' guide.

with the seeker/fast_mux_switch=false change, channel change and LiveTV now works perfectly in the limited testing that I have done. Thanks for the assistance!
I have not yet tested scheduled recording, etc. I will try to do that sometime today and will report my findings.
The only issue I have is that when launching sdvbrecorder a dialog box pops up for hardware options (same as foolio's issue I assume). I am using a technotrend 1.5 card, and the dialog box asks for:
- Force Open
- use BOB
- use Softscaling
I am not sure how to set these to a default value so that the dialog box does not come up. I could probably use a windows script or a girder event to hit enter; something for another day.
My config:
SageTV 2.1_10
jre 1.4.2_6
MT312 dvbcore.dll (3/3/2004)
Technotrend 1.5 DVB-S, 2.17g driver

Also how many is interested in DVB support at all? Are there any users of my SDVBCoreRecorder?
Anders - I have been using SDVBrecorder for months now - with very few problems.
I reckon there are quite a few users here in the UK - but would be far more if set up was a little more straight forward - ie automatic tuning and no playing around with text files.
There really isn't a combination that works as well as Sage and SDVBreorder once it is set up, for use in the UK - I have tried (and purchased) many apps, though Sage is the one I use every day.
The only problems I have is that channel changing is rather slow (it can take a few seconds to change channel) and occaisinally it crashes on startup of Sage.
I really believe that many more people would use this in the UK if it matured a little.
Anyway - thanks for all the work you have done up till now - it is greatly appreciated.

After completing the SDVBRecorder mods to work in Oz, I've been preparing ( slowly ) an update that includes the following :
-Modify Tuning Handling routine/Cache TP details for quicker programme changes
-Provide ability to tune programme by Service ID
-Return Errors to SageTV via Network Encoder Protocol
-Add 'About' function to provide System Information and Status
-A switch to Open Source JVCL JvTrayIcon component for System Tray Icon
I'm hoping I'll have finished testing it by next week. I'll then get Anders to make the release available. Other than possibly looking at adding a UI for tuning ( I've got some skeleton code already working ) I probably won't be doing any further work on it, but will fix any bugs that you find. This is primarily due to Saar dropping support for 3rd party software based on DVBCore. The latest version of DVBCore no longer supports the interface that allows SDVBRecorder to currently function. :bang:
I've also been looking at BDA alternatives and there are a number of solutions that would fit into the current SDVBRecorder framework. The only issues I can really see are : A) Limited support/availability for DVB-S & DVB-C drivers B) the reliance on 3rd party mux filters to produce the mpeg file and C) The reported buginess of Microsofts PSI Parser. Of course if someone would like to port the mpegtools code from Linux that would be appreciated :)
Having said all that, I'd be happy to be a part of the said project if/when it eventuates.
Cheers

Man, that sounds great- too bad we don't have the similar experienced people working on the DVB-S side of the mod.
for the most part, all my scheduled recordings worked great. Two main issues:
1. about 5% failure rate in channel changes - ie, didn't change the channel = incorrect recording
2. difficulty with the DVB-S sdvbrecorder on initial load - I need to change to about 5 different channels, before it works and tune to the correct channel. Once it does, alls subsequent channel changes are smooth.
3. Doesn't handle suspend/wake gracefully. It crashes on waking from a suspend. And with the problem describe above, I'm just going to leave the server with the tuner running full-time.
I will post a How-To/FAQ and destribute to other DVB-S users - hopefully one will have the programming expertise to modify and improve on Yoja's and Ander's work.
All-in-all, I'm very pleased. I've converted my computer from Mytheatre to SageTV and plan to buying sageclients for my other computers.

Anders-speaking for myself, I would be very interested in DVB-S support, I use a Hauppage Nexus-S, and I pray every night that you will help us ;) Lol
I wish I could help, but I'm green like grass when it comes to that kinda stuff. ProgDVB along with it's plugins works pretty good; but it sure is heck is no SageTV. If sage would work with DVB cards I could see the Sage sales skyrocketing right out the roof-I for one know at least 5 people that would get in on it right away.
Maybe I can help in another way; I'd be willing to paypal you a little $ donation for the DVB fund, considering I wouldn't really think it would be fair for you to go buy one JUST for the sake of helping us out. Just trying to help out however i can, if something like that would interest you feel free to let me know :)

But I am not happy with the files created by DVBCore, they dont play nicely in all players. The tests I have done with BDA makes "better" mpeg files.
you are very correct here - many of the dvbcore mpeg2 are quite poor headers, etc - causing problems with seeking in sage and other players.
The newer dvbcore works much better in terms of compliant mpeg2 but don't work with the sdvbrecorder, unfortunately

Has anyone managed to get this to work with the latest myTheatre (v3.20.02) ?
The 3.13 version as quoted working doesn't support my card, but the 3.19 and beyond versions do.
I'm trying to use this with the VisionPlus DTV (DVB-T) card in australia.
This is the debug output:
Frequency: 0
VERSION 8:27:32 PM
Please report this to Anders:
VERSION
NOOP 8:27:32 PM
NOOP 8:27:32 PM
NOOP 8:27:32 PM
STOP 8:27:38 PM
The first line of debug ("Frequency: 0") was when I pressed 'Channels' in the debug window.
Should this show all the channels that are setup ?? Or is this the usual output ?
This is my .ini file if anyone has any insight:

Unfortunately the SDVBCoreRecorder only supports DVBCore versions up to MyTheatre 3.12. This is because later versions is not supported for third party use.
The channels button is supposed to list all channels on the current frequency. But if the card is not tuned the list is empty. Your debug indicates that you are using a frequency of 0 so the card is not tuned to any station.

well - I've been running sage 2.1 now for 1 week with 2 dvb-s tuners and 1 hauppauge pvr250 tuner and it is running AWESOME. The dvb-s tuners are a bit flakey, sometimes missing a channel change here and there, but overall, it is running like a champ.
The current system is sage server with skystar2 and pvr250, 2 sage clients. the other skystar2 is on one of the client and being used as a network encoder.
I LOVE SAGE! it is about 1000 times better than mytheatre or any other DVB "PVR" programs out there. it's great having a true PVR again.

I have it working with the 1020a with no issues. I also have a TT1.5 working.
If you open up the DVB systray application does it show your 1020 as the active card?
You won't see any mention of the actual DVB card within Sage, only a reference to SDVBCoreRecorder on localhost port 6969. This will show up when you add the necessary lines to your sage.properties file and run the config wizard.

do you have any specific questions? where are you stuck - if you tell me where you need help, I'll try to point out certain things.
The key for me was:
1. make sure to have your channels in the SAGETV favorite group
2. Pick the correct VIDEO PID when setting up your channels in Mytheatre
3. make sure once you load sdvbrecorder - that you can access the avbroadcaster plugin by ip address: ie, 192.168.x.x on your browser and see the web interface for changing channels.
4. make sure you have a video directory that sdvbrecorder can access - ie, if over a network, use UNC \\server\videos
5. set the fastmux option in the properties file to "FALSE"
should work! This is great! While everyone is waiting for MEEDIOTV to support DVB or BeyondTV or MCE2005 or MEDIAPORTAL - sage has a mature PVR that works great with PVR

Is there any chance that we can get spectral inversion support in the configuration file? I am in Helsinki, Finland, and it is required for DVB-C here. I can't get anything to tune in without spectral inversion with any other software either.

madcoder - Spectral inversion is set by default to Auto which should work in most cases. Are you saying that you need to specifcally set it to on or off? What card are you using? I'll include the change in the version I'm ( still ) working on.
insomniac - If the dvbcore.dll from MT3.12 supports the Nexus DVB-S you should be OK. But no promises! One thing to be aware of is that there are currently no BDA drivers for DVB cards with hardware MPEG2 encoders ( that I know of! ). As BDA appears to be the direction the industry is heading, it's possible that any future versions of SDVBRecorder may not support this card.
Cheers!

Hi, I have this card...
Technotrend Premium DVB-C 2300 OT
It is supposed to be a recently released replacement to the Premium DVB-C 2.1 card. Here is a link to where I got it...
http://www.dvbshop.net/product_info.php?products_id=199
I also have the 3.5 Common Interface for it, along with a Conax 4 CAM and smart card from the cable company.
Their config it here...
http://dvb.swelcom.fi/cable.php
I have set up multiple other software like Showshifter (all needed to set spectral inversion, and then worked), and the software that comes with the card, but I don't like either, and I want a better PVR experience. I am really, really hoping to be able to use Sage; it looks wonderful.

Ok...
I know this might not be the place to get the information about MT stuff, but its driving me crazy, and I need to hit up every resource I got!
So, im setting up DVB w/ a SS2 in MT to point to birds 119 & 110. So far, this doesnt seem like a problem. I point to both satellites, scan them, and find all the channels. Mind you that this is off a Dish Pro Twin LNB with excellent signal.
So my problem is that I cannot get it to work on both LNB's at the same time. In order to watch the other satellite, I must click on a channel from the other satellite, close MT and then re-open MT. It will then lock on the other satellite and I can get channels from it. I have to close MT everytime if I want to get the opposite sat.
This tells me one thing (I think):
The internal switch (DP Twin) is working, just doesnt sense the switch?
Anyone with a Dish config have any input on this? Its driving me crazy!
Am I just configured wrong?
My config:
sat 119 - LOF1 11250000 SW 11250000 LOF2 11250000 ----> CSW-LNB1
sat 110 - LOF1 11250000 SW 11250000 LOF2 11250000 ----> CSW-LNB2

I've been searching everywhere for 3.12 with no avail :( I did manage to get my hands on 2.76 tho....which should work right guys?
One other thing i was wondering is if it would be easier (or even possible) to plug the A/V outs from the Nexus-s into the plextor m402u and have sage control the channel switching and instead of using the hardware encoder on the nexus to just use the plextor for recording? Looking forward to your thoughts....

I just wanted to throw out an SOS for anyone that knows Delphi and has knowledge of DVB-S. I am aware that Yoja has beeen gracious enough to share his modifications to Anders source, that works by using AVBroadcaster to change channels; BUT, it just doesnt work reliable enough to use in sage (Very intermittent channel change, wont switch satellites well. Cannot rely on it to happen on scheduled recordings).
After speaking with Anders, he stated that he prepared for DVB-S but did not know all the values, so he did not add it.
Can we either help him to add these values to his source (or PeterJB's newest)??
What I know:
Below is an example of a working DishPro LNB Transponder.ini file. There are two different lists because the Dish has a built in Digital switch. In order to scan them, you need to setup two different satellites in something such as MT, etc, and scan them.

Now from Anders SDVBRecorder.ini file, I see framework for some of these settings, but not all. listed below is a snip from his ini:
[Satellites]
0=terrestrial
; Transponders (Channels) with settings
;
; SatNo - Satellite Number
; Freq - Transponder Frequency ( MHz )
; Polarization - OFF/VERT/HORZ (DVB-S)
; OR Bandwidth - 6/7/8/AUTO (DVB-C & DVB-T)
; QAM - QAM Demodulator 6/32/64(DEFAULT)/128/256 ( DVB-C & DVB-T )
; SymbolRate - SymbolRate of Transponder ( DVB-C & DVB-S )
;
; Transno=SatNo|freq|Polarization or Bandwidth|QAM|SymbolRate
;
[Transponders]
0=0|474000|8
1=0|522000|8
2=0|554000|8
3=0|642000|8
So if you were to deduct what settings need to be added for DVB-S, would it look something like this?
1=12224000|VERT|20000000|201,120,94 //first line from my above DishPro.ini
I dont know what 201,120,94 would stand for, but the rest should be close to correct...
standard configurations for DVB below:
LOF1=9750000 (to my knowledge, not necessary with DishPro LNB)
SW=11700000 (to my knowledge, not necessary with DishPro LNB)
LOF2=11250000 (necessary with DishPro LNB)
What other kind of information would be necessary to get DVB-S support directly in Anders's app? Can this be done?

Foolio...when/if you make the How-To-Guide please make it a SageDVB for dummies, maybe even Sage DVB for retards(like me lol).I thought I wouldn't have much of a problem getting it going, until I got to the text files part then i suddenly realized how much of a n00b i really am. I must say, I am VERY impressed by you people as far as what you all can do with it. The STV's are fantastic too-my hats off to you guys. I don't even know where the hell to start :bang:
Where do you guys learn this programming stuff? I'd like to know what's involved, so that maybe I could go fishing myself instead of looking for dropped fish on the shore ;) Lol But if you all have 8 years of university and 10 years of work experience in the field I think I'll just keep patrolling the beach :D
Question...do you need MT to be working before this can happen? I have ProgDvb and VRemote working pretty good so i just stuck with that...it was quite awhile ago but I tried setting up MT and I couldn't get the satellites to scan for nothin so I just stuck with ProgDvb.

what LNB's do u have? DishPro? Legacy? What sats are you trying to scan? If its DishPro, the ini's above will help you. Are you using Yoja's modifications? If not, thats your problem. Go find Yoja's post for how to get going with DVB's.
What im trying to get backing on is to get native DVB-S support in Anders SDVBRecorder (and not user AVBroadcaster to change channels). Its just too problematic.

Thanks bud, I didn't realize Yoja made a post to get the DVB going, I was trying to make do with Andersnoblegers' DVB support thread :/ Maybe I can get this thing going after all then :) :smokin: Sage won't work with both sattellites though, will it?

Foolio,
I could use your help getting more reliable results with DVB-S (Yoja's). I am up and running, but not well using SDVB. In MT, on the other hand, I have a 100% working results. The only thing that I can think of is that Im just missing some hidden configuration, etc..
I am using the fastmux false setting. Whats your processor speed? I hear that if your running on an fast intel processor, that there are some problems with getting DVBCORE to change channels reliably.
Any suggestions?

Maybe it’s much easier to make a plugin for MyTheatre that does

Yoja,
It seems that you pretty much have a good foundation on what you have already done. Wouldnt it be easier to figure out how to pass commands direct to the core instead of AVBroadcaster? Dont get me wrong, I love that you did anything at all. Unfortunately, no matter what I do, I cannot make it work reliably.
On the flipside, I would buy a MT license in a heartbeat, if such a plugin was to be made.
Just a thought..
I.
EDIT:
Just afterthought..
But after looking at your source, I could nto find anywhere where you passes LOF AND SW info. Is that stuff not necessary(only for scanning). If so, would you only have to throw dvbcore compliant commands for the channel change and the core will take care of the rest?
Also,
Im trying to get this to work with a DishPro Twin and or a Legacy Twin. Both of these have built in switches(i read everywhere this is problematic). Are you running single or dual LNB's with DISEQC switches? Running well? Im willing to go buy some hardware if it is.
BTW: I love the fact that it queries the channels.mdb!

My Theatre and Sage is working like crap with my Nexus-s...the channel changing is horrible, but I believe my diseqc sw(spacecrap) is giving me the biggest problem. The weird thing is it works flawless with Progdvb. My lnb facing Echo 110 is a dual lnb legacy (I think?? Came with the dish and receiver) so i don't know if that my be part of it too. Another thing I'm wondering is if it could be that I have all but one Pci slot filled with a Pvr250, Promise Sataraid controller, Audigy 2 sound, and of course the dvb-s. Along with that I got a plextor M402U plugged into the usb2. If you guys figgur that's too much I'll start ripping my computer apart but in this day and age of computers i dont think it should be ??
This thread gets me all gitty because I know it's just a matter of time knowing how clever you all are :smokin: When this all works nice I'm gona have a feeling similar to being a rooster in a house full of hens lol. Thanks to everybody who has put work into this and Sage in general....where would we be without you :thumb:

Just wanted to throw it out there that I will donate $30 to whomever comes up with a solid, working DVB-S plugin.
Yoja's effort was great towards getting DVB-S working, but it just plain doesnt work for me. If others out there are willing to make donations towards teh DVB-S cause, now is the time to pipe up!

I'll match your offer Insomniac :) And I'll throw another $40 to the person who can come up with a solution that allows sage to control the channels on a dvb-s card, while the plextor convertx handles the recording (if this is even a reasonable request ). Yup, I'd be willing to spend some $ on these, and if Paypal is an option I'd pay the same day i disover and test the masterpiece :) If paypal isn't an option I suppose I'll have to send a money order...I promise you I will cough up the dough though. Would it not be easier to have a plugin for MyTheater that Sage can control? Then the system would work with any board/signal that MyTheater can control, and should be version independent, as long as the plugin loads & works under whatever version they have out. Wouldn't this fix the requirement of having the .12 version?

Guys and Girls,
We need to start taking a tally on what hardware people are running. And more importantly, what configurations work and what do not! Please share your exp with DVB.
My config:
Skystar2 2.6c w/ modified 4.28 drivers
2 Dish500's (1 with a DishPro Twin, 1 with a Legacy twin). Both built in switches.
Yoja's modified sdvbrecorder
LOF1 - 11250000 (for the legacy only)
SW - 0
LOF2 11250000
This config just simply doesnt work. I do get random channel changes, but it sticks on transponders and doesnt want to switch satellites. This is mostly because im running the Twin LNB's.
Testing next week:
DishPro single LNB's (one for 110, one for 119) ---> pansat 4x4 Disecq switch ---->Skystar2 + signal amplifier if necessary.
What works for you?

yea your confused :)
what we want is the dvbcore (which already has support for DVB-S) to change the channels on the card natively instead of through a plugin. Sounds simple, but I do not know Delphi. I have taken a look at the source and understand the changes needed to be made, just cant dedicate the time to figure it out by trial and error!
The recording is handled by software and the card, Carlg. No other capture devices are necessary.

Yea, I know that....I'd like to be able to record with the convertx for the format and quality. The format the nexus-s records in is ok to watch but I like recording football and the panning and zooming and high motion is just a little too much for that card imo. Not to mention to transcode the files into something else (divx, dvd) is a pita. Recording from the a/v out to the convertx does a really nice job, and if you want to store some of those video files on dvd, divx, mpeg4 or vcd it'll be alot easier and the quality will be a fair amount better. What I was confused about was whether or not it could be done ;) Having said all that, I didn't mean to make it look like one feature was more important than the other by offering more, because to me they're both equally important. Was tired after a long day of work. So, rather than knock the $40 down to $30, I'm offering $40 per each feature/plugin. $80 U.S. total from me for both ;) Edited to add my specs:
1 legacy dual lnb on echo 110
1 single lnb (Directv) on echo 119
Spacelab diseqc (Yuch, soon to be Chieta)
Hauppage Nexus-s driver version 1.7.0.5 (Skystar-1)
Haven't YET found a way to get MT nor Sage to work properly, Works perfectly well with Progdvb and vremote though

Things to do:
When you scan your satellites, make sure that you do it without a switch. Otherwise your results from your scan, and your channel changing will suffer. This was a major setback that I could of avoided if I had done this from the start.
Whatever machine hosts sdvbrecorder must have hyperthreading either turned off, or you can right click the sdvbrecorder process and set the processor affinity to one processor. Very important!
Make sure that the fast mux switch is set to false. Again, very important!
Someone can correct me if im wrong, but in avbroadcaster, I dont believe its necessary to actually have it broadcasting. Even if it is, you can surely click the audio only option.
you must manually edit the channels.mdb to reflect the correct channel numbers on every channel (as in Yoja's directions).
Things that still happen:
Sometimes you will get a black screen inbetween channel changes (seems like a sdvbrecorder bug on how it handles file creation?) You will need to change the channel and then change it back. Again, this is in the 1% percentile, but its a major downfall if you have a scheduled recording and this happens (murphys law?).
Am I happy?
Enough, yes. I am incredibly greatful for Anders hard work getting this solution going! Although I would much rather pay someone to integrate channel changing w/o outside plugins, and somehow figure out how to allow for hyperthreading and fast mux switching. My $30 offer still stands.
Hope this helps someone....

Thought I should share a good find for the Hyperthreading issue with sdvbrecorder....
If you do not want to slow down your machine by disabling hyperthreading, or setting the processor affinity everytime you start sdvbrecorder, you do as I have done. This will work with most all applications, so keep it in thed back of your mind for other fixes.. Below is a link to imagecfg.exe w/ instructions:
http://www.robpol86.com/misc_pgs/imagecfg.php
Its a simple patch on the binary which makes the program permanently start with whatever processor you choose. If you have hyperthreading on 1(2 hyperthreaded..), then your setting would be:
imagecfg -a 0x1 c:\path\to\file.exe
http://www.robpol86.com/misc_pgs/imagecfg.php
MAKE A BACKUP! works fine for me, but it would be wise to back your executable up. Always is...
Anders,
One thing that I am missing is the ability to specify which driver to use (by default) when you launch the application. Im pretty sure that dvbcore does allow for such command line parameter. Would you happen to know if it will work here and what it is?
e.g.
sdvbcorerecorder.exe -enhanced

Does anyone know why a DVB-T card is any different to a normal analogue card? Doesn't the DVB-T card have on an board MPEG2 encoder just like the analogue card. I don't see what the big problem should be.
Anyone care to shoot me down?
AndersNolberger
02-24-2005, 06:18 AM
DVB-T is already MPEG2 so no encoder is needed. But in principle a DVB card is as simple (or difficult) to support as an analog card with encoder.
The reason for bad support is that the market has been to small and that all cards had its own driver architecture. Now that BDA is coming I think that more programs will support DVB.
As most know I am working on a network encoder for BDA. I have not finished it yet but that is not because of technical difficulties (at least not only that) but I am doing it on my free time and there are so many other things to do.
We will see who is first with DVB support: me, someone else or Frey! (I already have one plugin but it is not working very well for all users, try it if your card is supported.)

Hey i made it i was able to use my Twinhan 1020a DVB-S card work with SageTV
and i am verry happy with that except for two thing that someone can help me with it: 1. When in TV guide on in Live TV i can't use the numeric key on the remote to change channel when i tried for example to go to channel 520 i press first the 5 and it appear on the screen but when i press the 2 everything disappear like and nothing happen 2. When just changing channel i got some freezing of the picture and the sound for the first minute and sometime time during viewing after that (note: i am using a MediaMVP maybe it this the issue)or maybe the lot of collision i got on my hub is causing the problem (before using SDVBRecorder everything during live tv was working fine.
For the rest i must say to all you who made this plugin (Anders and Yoja) thanks you !!!

Hi,
I have been considering giving DVB-T a go. I just have a few of questions:
1. is it possible in Windows 2000? Are BDA drivers supported?
2. Do I need DVB core, in which case where do I get it?
3. Anyone using a USB DVB-T device? I only have one PCI slot so I will have to go USB, but knowing that someone has it working would be nice! I was thinking of a Nova-T USB2, but apparently it only works under Windows XP. Anyone using a USB device under 2k?
Thanks

1. SDVBCoreRecorder does not support BDA but I think it will work in Windows 2000. It is based on a really old version of DVBCore so many newer cards does not work at all.
2. There is a version of DVBCore in the zip file but the slighlty newer one that works better is not available any more.
3. I don't know about USB devices but it should work in SBDARecorder if there are BDA drivers for your device.
Take a look at SBDARecorder. There is an early beta available from http://www.nolberger.se that might work. The problem is to find a working combination of filters. I am about to complete a new version of SBDARecorder soon now. I am aslo hoping that there will be support for TS-files in Sage so that the third party filters wont be needed.

It appears to be a bug related to playback in the beta. In my case, The files are being written correctly as I watch & change channels but the resultant files are not being rendered correctly by SageTV. They can be played subsequently by media player/WinDVD with no issue - so there is no problem with the actual files.
I've validated this with the MyTheatre Network Encoder plugin I've been working on and it exhibits exacty the same behaviour as SDVBRecorder.

odd. For me, the files stay at 0 byte. Maybe Ill have to re-run through my settings.
Do you connect to 127.0.0.1:whateverport for your encoder? This is how mine was configured, but ive been wondering if I should even bother trying hostname or actual ip(im sure it wouldnt do any good, but the question has been looming in the back of my head, none the less...)

I have 127.0.0.1\:6969 specified as the encoding host.
The channel change freeze bug appears to be a known issue that is supposedly resolved in the latest beta.
There is also the possibility that the new beta is sending commands that SDVBRecorder doesn't recognize or acknowledge???
