View Full Version : Teehan-Lax UI needs your help.....

You all remeber the teehan-lax UI (http://forums.freytechnologies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6575) that has OVER 5000 views, well it's about time (IMHO) to gauge some real user interest in getting some attention to get this off the ground.

We really need to set Sage apart from MCE, etc. and this would be a GREAT way to do it!

It is in this spirit, that I've created this poll.....

Bump

So, I was bored and actually read the PDF. They have some pretty interesting ideas about creating a useable PVR interface, and I like most of them. I wonder how many of thier usability ideas would be possible with Sage's current version. Obviously the pressure sensitive remote and hold vs. quick press of buttons would not be possible without a new way to interpret the IR signals, but the contextual menus seem completely possible.

The more I read, the more excited I got about going after a project like that. But alas, Studio remains a unicorn to me - a beautiful creature that probably would bite me in the ass if I got too close.

I don't want to commit to a project like that yet without knowing more about studio, but I'd definitly help out with the GUI's graphical elements if someone wants to work on the coding.

Crashless,

Thanks for the bump :thumb: . I know what you mean about 'the more you read about it, the more exited you get! If you read more of the thread, you'll learn that mlbdude made the statement that pretty much all of what is in their UI can be done with Studio. In fact, mlbdude whipped up some sweet looking functional mock-ups in a day or 2 which can still be viewed in the thread.

I have all the graphic elements for this UI that the teehan-lax guys gave me, so if you'd like to work on some screens, let me know. I know there for a while mlbdude was excited about doing this  but unfortunately I think he's becoming burned out by the lack of respect that his work has been getting by some review sites.

I'm hoping that he'll take another look with the results of this poll, and this thread (http://forums.freytechnologies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7742) that 'hopefully' he or others might get re-inspired especially if folks like yourself are willing to shoulder some of the workload.

Anyhow, thanks for the bump and let's keep hoping that Sage or mlbdude with 'throw us a bone!'.

I'd love to take a look at the gfx elements. Maybe I could come up with some screens that at least for now, could be dropped into an existing stv to get interest.

I saw that post from mlbdude, and it's really a shame. I really felt bad after reading it. Maybe a paypal donate site in his name would be appropriate? I don't know how to do such things, but I know I would toss him some beer money if he'd take it.

I can't say I've read the document but I did skim the pictures and they look good. I'm getting more productive with Studio as the days go on. Though I don't have a whole lot of free time, I wouldn't mind helping out when I get a chance.

Crashless,

The info on getting the graphic elements is on it's way to you. I forwarded the message replies that I received from the teehan-lax guys so you could d/l directly. I know sometime the email systems at some isp's have a bad habit of stripping all attachments so I thought this would be the best way to get it to you. Let me know if you have any problems with access.

Meekell,

WOW! That's completely cool that you'd be willing to help out when you have time! Probably the best place to start (as you have time, of course) would be a complete read-thru of the teehan-lax document. That hopefully will give you a 'feel' on what you believe would be possible to do. I saw you are from Seattle, can I ask what part? In my 'former life/career' I was a software test engineer for the Redmond giant everyone so loves to hate

Thanks again, guys!

Thanks, got'em. Nice, basic guide. It'll be a good starting point. I guess I'll post updates here. Might not be able to start until next week though. Big 'SC football game to attend Saturday. Actually, not that big of a game, Arizona St. Should be fun. :)

I saw you are from Seattle, can I ask what part? I live in West Seattle, a few minutes from the beach.

Soooo .... Would this include the cool remote too ?? :jump:

That would make Sage jump ahead of MCE and Snapstream on the remote side !!!

Thanks for the support, guys! Keep it coming!

mightyt,
I wish that they had a way to make the remote available, but they don't. Really, with Sage's ability to support almost any remote this UI should be easy to control. Girder has the ability to have one button serve 2 functions by watching to see if the button is 'tapped' or 'held down'. This could possibly duplicate the jog dial on the teehan-lax remote.

Update,
we are touching base with mlbdude in the hope that he will provide us with the code he's already done for this in the hope that it will be an easier starting point for us.

More later.....

I've got a rough draft of a working epg with the video preview (I couldn't screen capture the video though).

I hope to hear from ThL regarding the font issue tomorrow, I'll PM you the details once I get them. Crashless has also offered to do some graphics work on this project, is there anything that you need that he might be able to help with?

PLEASE let me know if there is ANYTHING that I can assist with. (that includes 'beta' testing ;) ) I don't have Studio, so I can't do much but I WILL rally the troups and knock on whatever doors you need to get what you guys need.

I'm getting more stoked as each day passes!

Crashless has done a great job reconstructing some of the graphics that where not included in the teehan-lax set. I've been using Arial for the font, but would love to replace it with 'Interstate' if possible. I will definitely keep you in the loop. ;)

About the font, don't know if you saw this. Should be a good stop gap in the short term.

abasu2003,

Thanks for that link. It will make a good 2nd choice as I think we will be able to get the 'real deal' from Teehan-Lax. I'm still waiting to hear back from them.

How about some shots of what I've been working on, keeping in mind that most screens are incomplete. As you may notice, there's several graphics that haven't been added yet. I want to give sage a completely new feel so I've redesigned just about everything. :smokin:
