View Full Version : Running out of space for Seeker

When I got home from work today, a SageTV popup message was on the screen that said the Seeker did not have enough room to record anymore so it would stop recording. I didn't have it set to record anything so it was just recording whatever was on the current channel all day until the poup box.
Isn't it supposed to delete programs when it runs out of space? I mean it is saving programs that I didn't tell it to record in the first place, and I don't have the intelligent recording on.

Are you running SageTV in sleep mode during the day? That will help alleviate any unscheduled recordings with intelligent recording turned off.

No I wasn't running it in sleep mode. I don't really care about the recordings during the day, it is that popup box that came up. If it had actually been recording something useful, it looks like that would have caused it to stop recording the show. Shouldn't it delete the various garbage shows instead of giving a popup box?

How much diskspace do you have?

I have two directories specified for storage. They total 34 GB of space right now.

I got this popup box again last night. I left SageTV running overnight in regular mode. There was a poup that said this:
Message
Seeker was unable to free up enough disk space to continue. Recording must stop.
OK
Again, shouldn't it delete all those recordings it is doing instead of this poup box and then quitting the current record?

I certainly think it should delete the 'live tv' recording files it made while it was open as needed if ity runs out of space... The Live TV recording files it makes while watching Live TV should be the most expendible and safest to delete.
If that isn't what it currently does, it is what is should do in the future...

What are the diskspace rules you setup for each of those directories? (leave free, use all, etc.)

I had this problem when I installed Norton AV and it installed their "Norton Protected Files". It will save ANY file deleted. I had to configure it to ignore the Sage record directories.

I am using the 'Use All space' rule. I don't have a antivirus installed. I haven't checked the recycle bin though. It doesn't delete them to the recycle bin though does it?
Another thing about the disk space, I setup two directories to 'Use All' space on which should be about 36 GB. I can't actually see from the System Information box in SageTV that it is using it all though. It says like a total of 23 GB for Video Space and then it shows the amount used for the library (~ 4GB), but it doesn't show how much is free for the library. Anyway from the two totals it only comes up to about 27 GB instead of 36 GB.
BTW, the different directories are on two different partitions on the same local drive.

Without a third party app installed, I don't think they will be deleted to the recycle bin.
And shame on you for not having some AV software! :bang:

Hehe. That computer doesn't run anything but SageTV and myHTPC on it, behind a firewall. Hopefully it is safe. :)
who needs antivirus software? just don't download viruses

fasttech, check your recycle bin settings. Be sure its disabled for the drives that SageTV uses for video. Stuff shouldn't go there, but sometimes Windows does weird things with the recycle bin.

I checked the Recycle bin and it was empty. How do you disable it though? Anyway, there was 20 GB of stuff in the errant directory, but none of it shows up aywhere in SageTV. It isn't in the Library or in SageRecordings.

That'll usually happen if you delete the Wiz.bin file. You can delete everything in the errant folder at any time, nothing in there is accessible through SageTV.

I have never touched the Wiz.bin file. Does SageTV not delete these files in the errant folder? I assume it creates them right?

It puts files in there that it can't account for anymore, ones that are 'errant'. SageTV doesn't delete them because it's not sure what they are.

I am also receiving that same error message. "Seeker was unable to free up enough disk space to continue"... I get that message as soon as I try to go to LiveTV. Not sure what is causing this. I have lots of diskspace available to me(200gb).

Does Sage even record shows at all? If not look at some of the possibilities below.
Assuming you're using Win XP, do you have system restore turned off on the partition that Sage is using? if not turn it off.
Is the recycle bin off for the partition that sage is using? if not turn it off.
Do you have any programs like Norton that backup data in the background running on that partition? if you do turn them off.
Are you using a seperate partition for Sage's recordings? If not consider doing so. (This is just good computer practice in general. ie Easier backups, trouble shooting, etc. Also helps customize for the questions above without effecting your main Windows partition.)
Anyone: Did I miss any of the other common possible causes of this situation?

I recommend using the "Use All" diskspace setting on a dedicated partition.
It's not that there's anything wrong with the other settings; its just that the user has less ability to interfere with Sage's diskspace management in that scenario.
