Please use this thread to discuss or seek support for Weather Report Suite (WRS).
Information about WRS can be found here: http://tools.assembla.com/sageplugins/wiki/WeatherReportSuite
Thanks!

Sure. :)
Would be nice to be able see the aniumated weather maps on the Media MVP. Obviously that would probably require transcoding the 5+ pictures into an MPEG or something. Not sure.
Would be nice if possible though.
Other than that, I love it.

You're exactly right... would have to make a movie out of them. It is on my list of things to look at. If anyone has info on an easy (or not so easy) way to convert a set of GIFs to an MPEG2, I'm all ears. Would prefer it to be pure Java. :)
EDIT: people have reported that WRS is actually usable on MVPs using Matt's plugin. As shocked and pleased as I am, all I can say is, "how did he do that?"

I get animated maps on the MVP. In fact, they're the same exact animated maps that I get on the sage server.

Wow, that's pleasantly surprising, Stacy.
If you don't mind checking, I'd be interested in how fast your refresh is set at... most of the animations in the example config refresh at 0.75 seconds (3/4 of a second)... the U.S. National Satellite is set at 0.25 seconds....

The links to the java extentions and the STV in the WIKI in your first post are broken...
Was trying to install it for my Media MVP client install (keep getting Failed to load WRS, blah blah), but can't d/l them as the links are broken. :)

It personally took me a while to figure out the whole weather suite xml file thing, so to help anybody here in the Pacific North West I am posting my customized weatherconfig.xml file that includes...
Seattle High Level Info (Local Conditions)
Animated Area Radar (Washington, Northern Oregon, Northern Idaho, Western Montana)
Animated Metro Radar (Greater Seattle Area, Olympia to Everett)
(11-23-04 )Added Local Traffic Maps from WSDOT (North End, Bridges, South End) Changed some labels to better fit the buttons.
Every time I update my STV I just drop this one into the SageTV folder and over write the file to get my settings back.
Works for me on 2.1.10 with CayarsV21Cr2 STV
Enjoy! Hope it saves somebody some time.

Ok, now I see where my weather + MediaMVP problem is!
For some reason I can't just arrow over onto the menu items that has the animated maps. I have to arrow over and then click OK...
I only have to do this on screens that have animated maps though! If I go from my National Conditions screen (that has an animated US precip map) back to the standard Local Conditions screen I can just arrow over. However to go from the Local Conditions screen back to my National Conditions screen I have to arrow over, and then hit OK...
Anyone know why I would have to hit OK instead of just arrowing over?
Oh, and just for the record, the maps look almost the exact same as they do on the PC. I guess the media MVP can refresh the screen fast enough after all! Cool. So never mind the turning it into an MPEG thing in post #2... Don't need it.

For some reason I can't just arrow over onto the menu items that has the animated maps. I have to arrow over and then click OK...WRS works a little differently than most other (all?) menus as far as navigation goes.
The reasoning behind this design decision was that I wanted to limit the number of button presses required to navigate its menus, and to avoid the potentially long loading times of its menus if a user hasn't really decided to view the page (i.e. if the user is trying to skip over a menu item, I don't want to start the animation).
In short, it operates on a slight delay... if you focus on one of the left or top menu items more than briefly, it should load that page. Perhaps there is something about the way that WRS does this that is tripping up Matt's MVP client?
Since I don't have an MVP, I can't test it or really talk intelligently about what it does.

It wasn't abasu to whom I was referring, it was someone else who actually added a legend to the bottom of an image as an extra layer.
salsbst, don't know if you are referring to me, but I have attached my legends that I created from the legends found in the "radars" that are setup as defaults with WRS. All I did to use them was to edit the weather config file to show another layer and pointed WRS to look at these files...
just wanted to add that these files are transparent and will act as overlays to the downloaded radar images... the text may not be legible on a tv but the point was to get a general reference to what certain colors referred to how depending on it's location in the scale, how severe it is/will be

Can you tell us how you added this to WRS. Maybe attach a copy of your XML and point us to the line additions you made ... Also where (what folder) did you place the GIF's in? :)

Thanks, T.
Well, instead of having everyone scroll through my xml file, I decided to do a screencopy of the area I edited and circle the actual changes I made...
you'll notice that there are black ovals around some things and then black rectangles are around others, ovals just indicate that the radar "feed" is an area or metro feed from the site which tell you which of the legend files (metro or area) to use on that particular radar, bringing us to the rectangles each "rectangled" text string relates to the previous "ovaled" info above it.
you'll also notice that there are red rectangles, these show the grouping of the xml for each individual radar map... don't let this scare you, all you need to do is locate similar strings in your weather xml file, scroll down to where you start seeing "<image href="http://www.nws.noaa.gov/forecasts/graphical/images/conus/MaxT7_conus.png"/>" or similar strings and you'll start seeing similar groups like mine
To keep the xml clean, click at the end of the line that is above the line containing "</view>" (see the arrow in my screenshot) hit Enter to go to the next line and insert the appropriate string below (depending on if the map is an area or metro map)
the text strings you will need are (without "" marks):
FOR AREA RADARS:
" <layer type="image" name="radar" href="file:/C:/Program%20Files/Frey%20Technologies/SageTV/STVs/OriginalV2/radar_key_area.gif" imageType="png"/>"
and FOR METRO RADARS:
" <layer type="image" name="radar" href="file:/C:/Program%20Files/Frey%20Technologies/SageTV/STVs/OriginalV2/radar_key_metro.gif" imageType="png"/>"
you'll need to place the legend files (attached) in the "OriginalV2" file for my location string to work, making sure that if you installed in a directory other than the default for sage you need to reflect those differences in the strings above (tip: "%20" means a space as in "Program Files"... see strings above)
don't be alarmed if at first you do not see the legend, it could be a number of errors... namely whether you have the right version of WRS and/or nielm stv that supports more than four layers, next check that the legend files are in the right directory, if you installed in a directory other than the default... you'll need to reflect those differences in the location string for the legend files, etc.
hopes this helps

I was hoping to include weather on my sagesever. I don't have a custom STV on it right now and would prefer not to for the time being. Is there a way to include weather (WRS) in the original STV?
BTW I have gone thru all the instructions and it doesn't show up anywhere in the original STV.

The import mechanism is only useful for STVs that allow you to define custom menus (Cayars and Nielm at the moment).
So, AFAIK, STVs that currently support WRS:
Maldude2
Nielm
Cayars
MCEXCON (sp?)

Hmmm... what if the customizable menus feature were imported first? Maybe WRS could then be used in any STV? (See: Nielm STV Modules for more imports.)

I've been using mlbdude's SageMC......

When you import your weather suite, where does it show up in a menu? Without Studio, how would you add it to the menu?

Well, I imported the dynamic menus into the SageMC STV so I could then import the WRS.
Yikes, what a mess!
After importing dynamic menus, the SageMC all of a sudden loooked like old sage with different font sizes.
I couldn't even get to detailed setup. After going through the steps to get to setup, if you selected DETAILED SETUP, it would complain that it couldn't find "New Setup modified by Cayars."
Cayars is in Nielm's import module?

Sounds like you have a menu file around from my stv which has some different names in it. You might want to try the menu file in the zip.

The dynamic menus may not import correctly into SageMC, since it is such a changed STV. You might want to get clarification of that in the imports thread just in case nielm doesn't see this.

Hmmm... what if the customizable menus feature were imported first? The import order does not matter with my dynamic menu import -- it sees all menus whenever they are imported
Well, I imported the dynamic menus into the SageMC STV
What a messhttp://forums.sage.tv/forums/showpost.php?p=67479&postcount=29
I am not surprised... as I mentioned in the instructions, the modules are only tested with the OriginalV2 STV. (as it tries to use things already in this STV)... MCE is a completely new STV, so the import will not work.
(think of them more as patches than plugins)And my modules only import the functionality they advertise, so the dynamic menu import will only give you a customisable menu, it will not give you the functionality behind any menu items that you already have set up using other STV's
(please continue other comments on my imports STV's in their own thread... Thanks)

Any insight as to how you got it to work? I think I understand how to modify the weather.xml file (at least at an elementary level) but for the life of me I could not figure out how to identify what jpg or gif file made up this traffic map. So, how did you do it?

It took awhile to finally download, but hopefully that is only because it was the first time.I guess now is as good a time as any to point out some issues that are relevant to your comment.
(1) the default implementation of WRS does not get initialized when you launch SageTV, rather it gets initialized when you first load WRS. This is configurable (you can switch so the WRS will load and begin to download images as soon as SageTV is launch).
(2) the default implementation of WRS does not download images in the background (you can switch it so that it will obey the "maxage" attribute even when you are watching TV).
(3) the initial download of images happens in the order that they appear in the weatherconfig.xml file.
I'll have to get back to you on the properties that you use to change the behaviors listed above in (1) and (2).
how to identify what jpg or gif file made up this traffic mapI just right-clicked in the image in my browser and chose 'Properties', which revealed the name of the file. Viewing (and understanding) the html source would work, too.
Yeah, I'm at work too. Gotta love VNC!... and permissive proxy servers (which I don't have at the office).
You probably already know this, but anyone who gets the idea to VNC remotely -- make sure you use a secure tunnel -- VNC doesn't do any encryption, which means you're pretty much sending naked keystrokes and pictures of your screen over the internet unless you tunnel it securely!

I know this is easy for you guys, but In the Weather Suite I can get my local weather and have modified the line required to add my town and zip code. FINE. I notice however that if I change to one of the other cities, and go back to the main/ first weather page, I have 3 options for all the other cities, except mine.
Basically it's 1. current conditions 2. local rain fall 3. local satellite
I dont have the last 2 on my system for my locality.
What file must I modify and what (links, examples please) to get this to work? Could someone cut and paste the section so I know what to lok for and what to change?
Ive done a lot of reading and have gotten CC, comercial skip and such all to work fine, this last one is all thats left for me.

It means that the java helper files for running WRS could not be loaded :)
Did it ever work for you before?
Have you installed a new Java version recently: if so check all the Runtime library extension .jar files are in the Program Files/java/jre_xxx/lib/ext directory of the new version.
Did you unpack the WRS zip file into the sagetv directory -- so that you have files such as: SageTV/com/stusals/wrs/*.class

Salsbst,
I recently started using Girder with the USB-UIRT and now the WRS is acting a little funny.
Under the built-in SageTV support for the Hauppauge remote everything worked fine.
Since Girder is using SendMessage commands to send Sage instructions, I can no longer see the forecast. That's the one where you cursor right to get the top menu to Forecast, then another right arrow command is supposed to highlight the forecast so you can scroll. Under Girder/SendMessage that does't work. The right arrow just moves the top menu over to Change Location.
Also, another difference is the way the arrows work. Under the built-in Hauppauge IR support, you actually need to press SELECT or wait a couple of seconds for the arrow keys to select the new command, right? Under Girder/SendMessage just moving the arrow down immediately causes the choice to be selected. Same with left/right movement. Maybe that's what's causing the above problem with not seeing the forecast??
My wife and I are going through withdrawl not seeing the forecast --- we've had to (GASP) actually get off our butts and go to weather.com !!! :)

Stacy, thanks for asking. Unfortunately, my time is pretty much taken until after the new year so I can only be of limited help right now.
I use Girder and USB-UIRT and SendMessage myself, and WRS has no problems with that combination on my machines. I'm sorry that it isn't working in your home.
The navigation in WRS is (at least supposed to be) based on a delay. If you go right/left/up/down, you should immediately see that you have selected a new item in the horizontal or vertical space, but WRS is meant to react to your selection after a delay of a second or two. Perhaps seomthing in your Girder config is freezing WRS' ability to detect that you've changed your selection?

I found out what the "problem" is.....
I am using the new Hauppauge 45-button remote. It has separate CH+/CH- , VOL+/VOL- and arrow keys, where the old small remote combines CH+/CH- and UP/DOWN and it also combines VOL+/VOL- and LEFT/RIGHT.
Well, using the new features I mapped LEFT and RIGHT to LEFT and RIGHT in Sage. It appears that WRS is actually looking for something more than that when it comes to the forecast page.
If you simply use RIGHT when the top menu is sitting on FORECAST, it will advance to CHANGE LOCATION. However, if you re-map to use the old remote's VOL+/RIGHT, WRS sees that command and allows scrolling to and in the forecast.
At the moment it's no big deal. I just use the arrows like everyone else. Since I use an amp and digital audio out of the PC, the volume +/- doesn't do anything anyway.
However in the future as more and more people get the better remotes, it might cause a problem as STVs and, perhaps sage itself, use these funtions separately.
Thanks again for WRS.

The "PageRight" and "PageLeft" commands are the ones that should allow you to scroll within the 10-day forecast. For me, these are mapped to the FFD and REW buttons on my remote. So FFD and REW browse the forecast 3 days at a time.

I use the Hauppauge 45 button remote, also.
You need to hit FFWD to get into the forcast pane and move. I guess I was lucky, I did it that way even with the old Hauppauge remote, so wasn't any different when I switched.

You just need to copy the jars installed for WRS (and any other STV features' jars) from the previous JRE's lib/ext directory into the 1.5 JRE's lib/ext directory. If you do that, I wouldn't expect any problems.

Thanks Salsbst.
Now It works. Looks like WRS as part of the Cayars release 17 distribution does not work out of the box as advertised.
I'll have a look at what is different and will post him a message.

Hello all, a newbie here. Anyway, I have Sage 2.1 set and was attempting with no luck to get the WRS module add-on installed. Briefly, here is what I have done:
- installed the JRE Lib Extensions to my C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_03\lib\ext directory
- backed up entire C:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV directory (just in case)
- installed the SageTV additions - unzipped the weather-report-suite-sagetv.zip to my C:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV directory, ensuring nothing was overwritten (didn't overwrite the C:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV\STVs directory, but added the C:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV\STVs\OringalV2\weather_report_suite_import.stv to the existing directory)
- using the General Installation Instructions, attempted to import the module at Setup -> Detailed Setup -> Advanced -> Import SageTV Module (.STV) -> Select
However, this last step seems to not work. When I select Setup -> Detailed Setup -> Advanced -> Import SageTV Module (.STV) -> Select, it pops up the file list window, and shows weather_report_suite_import.stv in the list. I click on this file, and after about a second, it kicks me out to the Main Menu. That's it, nothing appears to have happened. I have tried restarting SageTV, but still there appears to be nothing different. It's like the selection of the weather_report_suite_import.stv didn't take. Is there a trick to selecting this? Is there another way to tell it to use it?
One last thing, I did the the following command prompt test and it produced the following output:
C:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV>java -cp . com.stusals.wrs.Testy
view is ready: false

So, this shows the core java portion seems to work, just doesn't seem to be linked to my SageTV GUI menu. Notice the first line, it says "view is ready: false". Seems like this might be an issue. Oh, and yes, I have not edited the weatherconfig.xml yet for my city, but I figured first I would get it up and running and then modify it for my specifc local.
Finally, does this procedure need to be done at the SageTV client too (I have SageTV client running on my laptop and also I am experimenting with Sage TV client for my Media MVP - BTW this works slick and is WAY COOL!).
Thanks for any assistance or insight into my problem.

it has probably installed itself, but there is no way of entering the screen... You will need to install the dynamic main menu plugin (http://sage-community.org/index.cgi/wiki/NielmModuleDynamicMenu) to be able to add a WRS menu item...

Nielm,
Thanks for the quick reply. Yup, I need to add the dynmaic menu module. Once I did that, I was able to add the WRS module by doing a Add New Menu Item -> Internal Screen - 104:Weather Report Suite - salsbst. Anyway, I was able to add a menu item for WRS which opens in the default weather view for DC (default weatherconfig.xml has DC, Pittsburg, and New York - need to now edit this file for my location).
Anyway, it all looks great, and it works out well for me that the dynmaic menu customizations is required, as I love being able to edit the menus easily from withing the Sage gui. So it all worked out for the best. I would only suggest updating the install instructions for the WRS to indicate it requires the dynamic menu module (or if not, instructions on how to edit the menus without dynamic menu module) including instructions on how to add WRS thru dynamic menus (wasn't hard to play with it and find Add internal screen options, but it would be nice if it came out and said it).
Thanks again for such great customizations!

Thanks for the intelligent and detailed feedback, foxtony.
I've added a brief note to the community page for WRS ( http://www.sage-community.org/index.cgi/wiki/WeatherReportSuite ) under the installation instructions. It reads:
Note: if you are installing the WRS module directly (as opposed to using it within an STV that includes it), then you will not have a menu item within SageTV to launch it unless you use Nielm's Dynamic Menu. So, if you install WRS using these instructions and you want to actually use it :) , then install and use the Dynamic Menu to make it a menu item in your STV.

I just noticed that my Forecast within the WRS doesnt' have any pictures anymore. I think last month I made the comment that it does a better job of recognizing what pictures to put up there than the other weather manager but, after not checking it for some time, none of the pictures are showing up. Can you point me to a directory where the files should be, or maybe where it points to the directory in the weather.xml file? Thanks.

Ahh.... you mean the icons for the weather conditions. I misunderstood you -- I thought you were talking about a forecast map.
You should have a whole slew of png files in a directory named "c:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV\weather.com". If you don't, then that explains it. The files are in the zip file that is listed as "SageTV additions" at http://www.sage-community.org/index.cgi/wiki/WeatherReportSuite .

Must be the so called "storm" that is "ravaging" the Mid Atlantic area of the United States as we speak.
(Here in DC it's not even sticking to the roads and yet the local television would lead you to believe we were going to be seeing a blizzard.)

If you mean the 'Local weather' that only provides current conditions and forecast for one zip-code (the title of the screen would not be 'Weather Report Suite'), then this is a different weather plugin to the Weather Report Suite. Which STV are you using? Perhaps post in the support forum for that STV

Just wanted to say nice one to all the people who have developed this module, works very nicely. I have now got it configured for where I live and all is good. I live in South Wales in the UK, the main motorway through south wales is called the M4 and along it are cameras. You can get images from these cameras to see live traffic levels. So I added the image links to the WRS so i am now able to view the live camera images (stills taken every 5mins) for the various cameras I am interested in, which is very very useful. So well donefor designing the WRS so it is fleixble enough to do this :)
If anyone else lives in South Wales, the website the images come from is
http://www.traffic-wales.com/
...then navigate to the traffic map and go from there.

Ok, I give up...
I've tried the weather thing on a number of different STVs and on all of them when I change a location, upon reloading sage (it never picks up changes until after I do), I get Failed to load WRS Java Classes. If I change ANYTHING in the weather config file it does this.
All I want is one... just one working location...
<location
name="SPEKIN"
label="South Pekin">
<weathersourceinfo id="61564"/>
</location>
That looks like valid XML to me... It's not malformed... It's syntactically correct...

That's exciting. I would think that if mlbdude has added it to SageMC, then you don't need to import it.
You *may* need to download the jar files, though. You could just add the weatherconfig.xml file and see if it gives you the "failed to load WRS classes" error when you go to the menu. If you get that error, you probably need to download the jar files.

What do you mean, "running WRS?" Is this an application? When I enable My Weather Suite in SageMC, and I click on it, I get the xml file not found. When I first used it, I was playing Live TV, and there was a lot of frame/sound loss during the loading of the weather images. The next time I tried to use it, I shut down Live TV, and then went into the Weather Suite, and I kept getting a message asking me if I wanted to resume Live TV. No matter what I clicked, it would take me back to the main menu. If I selected weather again, same thing. Not sure if this is an STV issue, or something related to WRS.
Oh, and if it matters, I was using motions xml file as a test.

No, WRS doesn't handle javascript. I took a very brief look at the trafficland site. They're purposefully making it difficult to fetch the images outside of their web site.
http://cam04.trafficland.com/trafficimage.php?system=vdot&webid=570&pubtoken=74fc797b7ce37ed4a86ceff49a471140&random=0.41120339195363903
It's the pubtoken thing that's the problem (unless they're reusable, which I haven't determined, yet).
In a future release of WRS (actually the rotan, i.e. rotating animated images, component), I may support scripting, such that you could write a script to get a token from their site.
But for now, I'm not sure you'll be able to use them.

Another question.....
On the Cayars version of WRS, if you pressed the OPTION button, there was a selection that allowed you to quit WRS and re-load the definition file.
That seems to be gone with the import for V3.
Is there some kind of XML command we can enter into weatherconfig.xml that would allow us to set a "button" to do the same thing?
It seems like I'm always tinkering with weatherconfig.xml when the server is recording, so that means I can't shut it down to reload WRS file.

I was just getting my development workstation settled and ready to dive back in to coding (after a hard drive failure) when I fouled up the registry while trying to hack my way into QAM recording, so it won't happen any time soon by me.
BTW, if anyone out there ever thinks they'll restore a ghosted image of a domain controller, don't do it!

Been using this with SageMC. How do you control how often it gets the weather info? For example, I checked the local current conditions last night, and the last update time displayed was just then. But this morning, checked the current conditions again, and the last update time was last night.
Thanks

For the forecast/conditions from weather.com, it is the attribute weatherSourceMaxAge="0.25" in the root element. This says that the weather.com info must be retrieved every 15 mintes (one quarter of an hour).
For image/animation views, it is the maxage="0.25" attribute in the view element. Same interpretation.
Please note two issues:
a) there are configuration options which can cause WRS to not prefetch images before it is first launch and to cause WRS not to keep images updated while it is not displayed. If you have the latter set, then that may explain the issue
b) it is possible that one or more of the WRS background updater threads hung. I kind of doubt this because I revamped the downloading process to avoid background thread hangs due to bad HTTP situations, but I can't say that thread hanging is impossible.

I checked and all the "maxage" properties are set to 0.25. In order for me to get the latest I have to switch locations most of the time. As soon as I have done that the weather is updated.

On the bottom of my local conditions, I get text that says:
Weather data provided by Weather.com [garbage text]
where [garbage text] is a series of "A" with a tilde above, followed by a box, i.e.
A_tilde BOX A_tilde BOX
Why is there this garbage text? Can I remove it?
It shows up on other pages, such as Sponsored links.
I'm guessing I don't have the proper font installed. Suggestions? Can I just remove this commercial all together?
Thanks!

I would think that just navigating away from the conditions or forecast views and then back again would do the trick.
(The values won't change if you just stare at them for a 1/4 hour -- that's the watched pot feature.)

Interesting difference ....
I have had my Sage Client, which is v.2.0.20 with Nielm's v.1.8 STV and Salsbst WRS set up perfectly ... I had customized WRS to include Traffic and set up my button selections to my liking.
I am building a new server and have install Sage 2.2.8 with Cayers Ultimate 18e STV which also includes WRS. I copied my "weathercondig.xml" file over to instantly gain my custom WRS and everything is again perfect ... except for one little thing ...
No sure why this difference appears, but on my 2.0.20 Client the left buttons and top buttons all have consistent font sizes and essentially word wrap, however on my 2.2.8 server with the same weatherconfig.xml file the top buttons are fine, but the left buttons don't word wrap and shrink in size??
I know that on the normal Dynamic Menus text will shrink unless you add the following to your menu.xml (or in this case cayers-menu.xml) ...
<option>dontscaleitems</option>
I've added that and it worked as expected on the Dynamic Menus, but the WRS buttons on the left remain the same.
Any reason why it would act differently on 2 different systems with the same weatherconfig.xml file???
Thanks, T.

FYI, WRS doesn't pay any attention to the Dynamic Menus settings.
I think that either neilm (in the import module) or Cayars (in his STV) may have changed the behavior of this. IIRC, the original design was constant-size (the way I happen to like it), but I think some folks wanted the dynamic sizing.

I know Cayers is still recovering, so maybe Crashless or Nielm can give me a clue it they added dynalmic sizing and if it can be turned off ... Nielm gave us the option in Dynamic Menus, so who knows!!

Or, if you do want to rebrand it a bit, you can use the "rotan" (rotating animated images) classes from the WRS source. Those are the ones that deal with animation and reanimation. The WRS stuff is mostly about formatting on the screen, menuing and downloading weather data.

I had a short look and I'm not sure that out of the box this would be good enough for webcams... The update time for images is in hours in the XML... that's not good enough for webcams. Where can I find the WRS source?

I would like to be able to see the detailed forecasts that are available on most of the weather sites. I have not seen this ability in any of the Weather plugins for Sage (only short descriptions like "mostly cloudy"). Does anyone know of a way to do this?
Is there any way to view the WRS source to see what functions can be called from Sage using Studio? Or maybe if I saw how you collect the data you currently get, I could figure out how to extend it?
Here's an example of what I'm looking to get:
Day: Windy. Snow flurries and a few snow showers throughout the day. Temps nearly steady in the low to mid 30s. Winds WSW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow 30%. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.
Night: Windy. Flurries and snow showers diminishing late. Low 27F. Winds WNW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow 30%.

The browser is supposed to open. Those buttons are there to satisfy the weather.com license agreement more than they are there to actually be used by real people.
It's been a while, so I can't remember, but does the default config file have those menus configured for the location that you're looking at? If not then that would explain the absence of the menus.
The WRS source is in the sageplugins project at sourceforge.

I *think* you may be able to import it and at least have it functional.
I have not been involved in Studio since the STV was refactored and since the theming work has been done so I don't have much clue as to what would be needed to adopt the conventions of the latest release(s).
And, to top it all off -- no, I don't have any plans to work on this. I haven't the time, unfortunately.

XML help needed!
I edited the weatherconfig file to my location (Cincinnati, OH), based off of a previous post that had a traffic map tab included. I installed WRS and all the weather maps work great, but I am having issues with the traffic map portion. I had feared I might, and here's the deal:
The map I am "borrowing" has clickable road segments, where, when you click a segment, it takes you to listing of detailed info. It is here:
http://www.artimis.org/mapseg.php
I don't want the info, I just want the map, since it is color-coded for conditions. I found my way through the source code and found all of the separate .gifs that make up each segment of the total map view, as well as the area map background itself. My thought was, similar to the weather maps that have overlayed parts (city names, roads, boundary lines, etc.), that each of these .gifs would overlay and create the map I want.
Unfortunately, there is info in the original source code that "locates" each segment on the map (x and y coordinates), and I don't know enough about xml or the rotan stuff in WRS to transfer this info to WRS. So when I put it into WRS, I get all of the road segments stacked on top of each other, and the background map is small and hidden, as can be seen in the attached screen shot.
Here is a sampling of just some of the source code (some things cut out, and only two of the 20+ segments shown) that shows what I mean:
function ShowSegments() {
show("Map1");
show("Seg126IA");
show("Seg126IB");
(many segments cut here)
}
<STYLE>
#Map1 { position: absolute; z-index: 1; top: 60px; left: 10px; font-family: sans-serif; font-weight: bolder; visibility: visible }
#Seg126IA { position: absolute; z-index: 1; top: 208px; left: 130px; font-family: sans-serif; font-weight: bolder; visibility: visible }
#Seg126IB { position: absolute; z-index: 1; top: 205px; left: 305px; font-family: sans-serif; font-weight: bolder; visibility: visible }
(many segments cut here)
</STYLE>
<BODY BGCOLOR=ffffff onLoad="ShowSegments()">
<div id="Map1"><TD WIDTH=100% ALIGN=CENTER VALIGN=TOP><p><IMG SRC="/images/map.jpg" BORDER="2"><BR></TD></div>
<div id="Seg126IA"><td><p><img src="/images/126IA.gif" border="0" alt=""></td></div>
<div id="Seg126IB"><td><p><img src="/images/126IB.gif" border="0" alt=""></td></div>
(many segments cut here)
The images (126IA.gif, etc.) are the ones I am trying to get. That segment, for example, is here: http://www.artimis.org/images/126IA.gif
But with no xml knowledge and only my intuition, I am guessing that the info that I need to get into my WRS config file is the "STYLE" portion from above, specifically the "top" and "left" data as below:
position: absolute; z-index: 1; top: 208px; left: 130px
So, if anyone is familiar with the WRS language, could you tell me where and how to put in the "locator" language?
Here's a piece of what I currently have in my config file. Note that I listed each segment as an animation since they sorta "jiggle" - should I just make them an "image"? Feel free to correct anything if it is wrong.
<view name="traffic" speed="750" delay="2000" maxage="0.25">
<layer type="image" name="Map1" href="http://www.artimis.org/images/map.gif" imageType="png"/>
<layer type="animation" name="Seg126IA" href="http://www.artimis.org/images/126IA.gif" imageType="png"/>
<layer type="animation" name="Seg126IB" href="http://www.artimis.org/images/126IB.gif" imageType="png"/>
<layer type="animation" name="Seg126OA" href="http://www.artimis.org/images/126OA.gif" imageType="png"/>
<layer type="animation" name="Seg126OB" href="http://www.artimis.org/images/126OB.gif" imageType="png"/>
(((many more segments omitted here to be short)))
</view>
Where/how do I put in the "locating" info?
Thanks!!:clap:

Hi, pj...
If I recall correctly, you can use attributes in the XML to control the placement of images, but I'm actually pretty rusty on the whole WRS thing, so I may be off base.
I'm in the process of a career alteration, so no time to dig in today. I may have some free time on my hands in the very near future, though! :)
Yes, you can use attributes to scale the height and width, crop, or set X and Y anchor-points. Here is an example...
<view name="statecombo" location="Milwaukee" speed="750" delay="3000" maxage="0.25">
<layer type="animation" name="base" href="http://sirocco.accuweather.com/sat_mosaic_640x480_public/rs/isarWI_.gif" imageType="png" fixedheight="0.8" anchory="0"/>
<layer type="image" name="key" href="http://vortex.accuweather.com/adc2004/common/images/keys/400x40/sat_rs.gif" imageType="png" fixedheight="0.2" fixedwidth="0.9" anchory="0.8"/>
</view>
another attribute I used on some maps was "cropbottom"

Is this still working for people?
Using the default configuration (New York for example) I get images but no data (no forecast etc)
I use it with Sage 6.3.10 (haven't tried the 6.4.x betas yet).
Works fine, thought the interface is a little inconsistent with the current standard STV.
I haven't tried the default weatherconfig file in a while -I modified mine for where I live or travel frequently and deleted the defaults cities, but maybe the New York links are out of date?

Thanks, Tiki...
I'm laboriously working on moving the numbers that were given on the original xml over into the lines of the WRS code (copy/paste, copy/paste...), but I came to the realization... pardon the noobish nature of this question, but I have no programming knowledge whatsoever...
In that code you pasted, what are the fixedwidth and anchor numbers (0.8, 0.9)... what are they a fraction of? Just the original file size? For example, my map that I am trying to piece together has X and Y coordinates that are done by pixel (so instead of, for example, 0.8, it's "360px"). What would be a good way to get that translated? If the decimal that you posted is indeed (as I guessed) a fraction of the size of the original picture, then I could make my original background picture 1000x1000 pixels, and then add a decimal point in front of those pixel numbers, and it should be right... your thoughts?
pj,
if you open up the weatherconfig.xml using a text editor (in Windows, right-click on the file, select "Edit" and tell it to use Notepad or Wordpad), you will notice that there are numerous comments in it.
Whenever you see: <!--
in an XML file, all the text after that point is a comment until you see: -->
To start with, read all the comments in the default weatherconfig.xml file.
Near the top of the file you will see the following comments:
A layer represents one set of frames in a view. Each layer in a view should have either X number
of frames, or 1 frame (if it is not an animated layer).
All layers have the following attributes:
type: the type of layer (can be "animation", "image" or "manualanimation").
name: used to identify the layer for the purposes of having a more readable configuration file.
A layer of type "animation" reads and parses an animated gif file. An animation layer has the
following attributes:
href: URL of the file that represents the layer's data
(optional) cropbottom, croptop, cropleft, cropright: percentage of the image to crop before rendering the
image for the client. Defaults to 0. Must be between 0 and 1 inclusive.
(optional)anchorX, anchorY: values passed to the client to define the location of the anchor within the
rendered image. Defaults to 0. 0,0 it the top left.
(optional)fixedWidth, fixed height: values passed to the client to define the width and height of the
anchor within the rendered image. Defaults to 1.0.
A layer of type "image" reads an image file. An image layer has the same attributes as an "animation"
layer.
A layer of type "manualanimation" reads a series of image file and composes them into an animation.
A manualanimation layer has the same attributes as an "animation" layer, except that it lack an href
attribute.
So the WRS import reserves an area on the screen where it will display the images or animation. The fixedwidth, fixed height, and anchor numbers are percentages relative to this area. The crop numbers are percentages relative to the original image.
By setting the crop attributes, you can trim unwanted parts of your picture.
By setting the fixed width and fixed height attributes, you can stretch or compress your image.
By setting the anchor attributes, you can move the images around.
You will probably need to spend some time playing around with these numbers to get the effect you want.
It's been awhile since I did this, but if I remember correctly, the weatherconfig.xml file only gets read once when you start WRS. This means you need to restart Sage every time you make a change before it takes effect.

Thanks - I had read those notes but I guess I just wanted confirmation from someone.
Unfortunately, I have bigger fish to fry right now... one of my HDHRs died... not good for the WAF.... :(

Greetings!
I am unable to display the weather.com information for current conditions, forecast, etc. Essentially, anything from weather.com isn't coming up. All my other maps, animations, etc. display fine. I have confirmed that the location codes from weather.com are correct. Any thoughts as to why this is occurring?
Attached is my weather config file.
Thanks.

Bump...
Did this configuration file work at some time in the past and suddenly stop working?
If it never worked, you could try removing the entries for El Segundo and 29Palms and try again. If that fixes your problem, then it might be because it doesn't like the punctuation in your labels (').
I had a problem where I labeled one of my maps "Satellite & Radar Composite" and it wouldn't work because of the "&".

pj,
...
By setting the crop attributes, you can trim unwanted parts of your picture.
By setting the fixed width and fixed height attributes, you can stretch or compress your image.
By setting the anchor attributes, you can move the images around.
So I took exactly what I had - which gave me a bunch of stuff stacked on top of itself - and I put in the anchorx and anchory values from the site that I found the source code for the page, converting the pixel offsets to decimal numbers (assuming that the background map will be "1x1", where the original was listed as being offset 360 pixels, I made the anchorx=".360"). I don't know if that's the right way to do it or not... but regardless, now I get a blank screen. Hmmm. I can understand if the offsetting was wrong, but I was hoping I would at least see something, so that I could make corrections...:confused:
I guess what I really need is someone to explain to me the text from the original source code, and what those offset numbers are doing with relation to the original background map, so that I can try to determine how to use them in the WRS code.... but first I would like to have the map pieces visible, period.

The WRS has not been retrieving forecast data since for a few months for me. The maps are OK, it's the forecast I'm missing. At first I thought it might have been related to the changes at Weather.com, but traffic on this thread seems to indicate that the WRS is working fine for some. Please advise if that's not true.
Today I finally had time to look at the error. The error has me stumped. Here's a sample from the log:

I was able to get Testy to work without error messages, after I struggled through some Java ignorance. (see http://tools.assembla.com/sageplugins/wiki/WeatherReportSuite#Testing)
I have also examined the timestamps of all the components in the WRS installation zip file and confirmed that I'm using the correct components.
Any thoughts? Right now I have maps only. Is it a weather.com thing or a Sage Beta thing?
I have revised my weatherconfig.xml to include Hurricane information, see my post: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?p=274884#post274884

Sorry, I forgot to keep tabs on this thread!
Tiki, this config file had been working fine for quite awhile, a couple of years now. My problem is exactly like egeller's: the maps (static and animated) are fine, and they retrieve up-to-date information, but the forecasts from Weather.com don't come in. I simply get "Untitled" for each location I select. But the maps are fine.
egeller
08-31-2008, 08:46 AM
Madas, Skarr11 and I, apparently, are seeing the same behavior - No forecast retrieval, but the maps work fine.
Thinking it's a Java issue, I nuked all the versions of Java and reinstalled the latest. No change.
I have a laptop I use infrequently. It has a SageClient license, so I upgraded it to V6.4.8 and loaded WRS and it works fine. I have compared the Jars in ..\SageTV\SageTV\JARs between the server and the laptop and made the server identical to the laptop there. Still no change on the server.
Does anyone have any idea on what to do about the NullPointerException error? I am still getting it.

Hey guys,
For some reason, I'm unable to download the v4 weather report suite zipfile via the link in the wiki.
I'll test it out again later today. I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem, and if this file can be downloaded elsewhere. Can someone host this file that has it?
Thank you

Now I just need to figure out how to configure it to tweak this for my location! Thank you! :)

Hello,
I just have a few questions. I tried to make a couple changes to get my local weather to show up. The default stuff seems to show up and work fine (DC, New York, etc), but when I make my changes I don't see them.
Is the only file I need to make changes to weatherconfig.xml? What about weatherconfig_us.xml? Do I need to make changes to both of these files? It appears everyone only poster their weatherconfig.xml, so I assume I don't need to update the other file...??
After I make changes, do I just have to restart SageTV, or do I have to do an 'import' or something again? I'm missing a step since I can't see my changes. I have tried restarting SageTV and that didn't work (I didn't see my changes). I'm wondering if I need to do another import again or something.
Sorry I don't know much about XML and I'm having trouble figuring out the flow of the code...
Thank you

You should only need to modify weatherconfig.xml and restart Sage. If you're using the service, you need to restart the service (I think).
SnyperBob

Hmmm, odd, restarting Sage/service wasn't doing it. I just now redid my config file, re-imported the WRS, and THEN restarted Sage again and it works!
Thanks for your help :)
Works great, I love it :)

Ok, on second thought, I don't think you need to restart the service. Restarting the client should have done the trick. I don't think re-importing could possibly be of help.
Anyway, glad you got it working.
Anyone using this with Sage 6.5.9?

There is a setting for WRS on when it downloads the weather info. You can set it to continuely update the info or download it when you use WRS(can't remember the exact details). I do remember getting the same screen as scat when I would set it to continusly download the weather info. Once I changed the setting back it seemed the problem went away. FYI....

Mine is set to only load when I open it (not continuously update), so perhaps this is the issue.

First I have never had SageTV on my main desktop computer and as a test I installed it then installed the following STV
1.) for ver 6.1.8 nielm's Multi-speed continuous FF REW module
2.) weather_report_suite
3.) for ver 6.4 or greater NielmModuleDynamicMenu
4.) I left the default weatherconfig.xml in place

I am attaching an updated weather_report_suite_import.stvi file that works with SageTV v 6.5.9.
I have corrected the menu bars along the top and left side of the screen and the local forecast so that they display at the correct size. I did not make any other changes.
I am not the original creator of this import and I don't know if the original creator of this import (salsbst) is still maintaining this import or not, but I thought I would float this out there.
I am only attaching the updated STVi file - you will still need the PNG graphics, JAR files, and XML files that come in the full release.
To use, first obtain the latest released version of the weather report suite and unzip it following the usual instructions. Then copy my updated STVi file in place of the one that came in the released ZIP file.

I would like to know more on how you opened this and changed what you did, I have opened Studio before but couldn't find any screens that show on the STVI
I have attached screens of the default install of weatherconfig, and screens of my weatherconfig
I have watched this daily awaiting this change, I use this everyday many times a day.
PS - If the screen with the change location is a easy change then could you change that also?
Please, pretty please:)

Hmm, I didn't look at the code for that screen - it displays OK for me.
... I just checked and it has the same code bug as the other areas. I will fix it...
I would like to know more on how you opened this and changed what you did, I have opened Studio before but couldn't find any screens that show on the STVI
It depends on how the STVi was created - some can be opened in Studio and others can't. However, since these are imports and not complete user interfaces, they often look like a blank screen when first launched. This is the case for this WRS import. So, here is what I did:
1. Launch Studio
2. From inside studio, open the WRS STVi. You will see a mostly blank screen.
3. Look down the studio tree to find the name of the menu you want to work with (in this case "Weather Report Suite -- salsbst"). Click on this menu widget in Studio. Then press <f5> to load (or re-load) the selected menu.
4. At this point, the main Sage window should be showing the screen you want and you should be able to navigate within it.
The change I made was this:
There are several places in this STVi where a Table Component Widget was used to create a row (or column) of buttons. The problem is that immediately underneath the Table Component Widget, they used a Conditional Widget. According to the current Studio manual, the Table Component Widget cannot be a parent for a Conditional Widget (see the table labeled "Valid Widget Parent-Child Relationships on page 54 of the manual).
It appears that Studio will not even let you place a Conditional Widget under a Table Component Widget. However, it will open an old STVi that was created this way and try to display it - it just displays it incorrectly.
To fix the problem, I added a Panel Widget in between the Table Component and the Conditional. I labeled it "Cell" (name doesn't matter) and set the Fixed Width and Fixed Height properties to "1.0". See Attached Screen Capture.
PS - If the screen with the change location is a easy change then could you change that also?
Please, pretty please:)
OK, I am attaching an updated STVi that corrects the locations menu too.
Tiki

Great job and thank you so very much again:goodjob:
Now I will try to get the local conditions to work, when I switch locations Sage locks up, I have been searching and it looks like the locations in the weatherconfig.xml file is now using your zip code before it was a number like <weathersourceinfo id="USFL0372"/>
but when I put in my zip code I still don't get the local information and as you can see in my above screen shots the default install of weatherconfig.xml shows the current conditions and its weatherconfig.xml file list the location like this: <weathersourceinfo id="USDC0001"/>
If anyone knows how to fix this please let me know.
EDIT 4-1-09 11:08 AM
Evidently mine takes a while to download all the images then it gets local information, so now my
Local Currently which show the Current Weather conditions.
and then Forcast Local which shows the 5-day of weather information are working again, see images

I have added the following to my weatherconfig.xml file
because last Friday there were no storms and then there were three, this hasn't happened since 1992 and then we had Hurricane Andrew in south Florida, right then I knew I had to update my weatherconfig.xml file for more than one storm.
Added animated sections:
1.) Tracking - Added tracking for up to four storms
2.) Spaghetti Plots - Added tracking for up to four storms
3.) Enhanced Satellite - Added tracking for up to four storms
4.) GFS model - Caribbean
5.) GFS Model - Atlantic
FYI:
You can only have a max of 20 images in a
type="manualanimation" array
or if the last image isn't found on the website you are getting them from
then no images from the list will get displayed.
I had trouble when adding the sections:
GFS model Caribbean
GFS model Atlantic
I thought there were 21 images and there was only 20 and nothing would display
I fought this for the last four hours, anyway just passing the info along.

Rename weatherconfig.xml.txt to weatherconfig.xml
Also I use Vista x64, you may have to edit the path Program Files (x86) to Program Files in the weatherconfig.xml file for Windows XP x32 or Vista x32.
