I am new to this whole concept; so, please bear with me...

If I set up a system with SageRecorder, could I use Girder to get the system to respond to a remote control from an old VCR?

I am asking because what I would like to do is the opposite of what most people want to do.

I want to have the IR blaster in my Dish Network system turn on and off recording in SageRecorder rather than have SageRecorder control the Dish system.

The system only sends two remote commands: record and stop

For this to work, I would also need for SageRecorder to be able to be set to default input and quality settings, I assume.

Lastly, if this would work, how would SageRecorder name the files?

I think that's it for the moment.

I don't believe this is possible because there is no default setting in SageRecorder for naming files like there is in SageTV. Why don't you just let SageRecorder control the channel changes on your Dish Receiver when it needs to record?

one of the reasons I was looking at SageRecorder rather than some of the other apps is that I'm not really interested in extra program guide features or "smart recording" or live pause, etc. I really just want a digital replacement for my vcr. I almost never watch tv when a program is on the air, I record and watch later. I'm tired of vcr's and tapes wearing out, and am hoping that a pc-recorder will be a bit more durable.

i already have a program guide in my Dish System, and it's easy to use

Also, as I understand it, if I go that way, I have to have two dongles on the pc -- one for receiving remote commands and one for blasting them to the dish system, no? more jumble in the entertainment center...

i certainly could use sagetv and set it up with all those other features, and i might in the end do just that. but it is a second best choice.

Since SageRecorder does not have the default file names, then I may keep looking for an alternative.
