I am pretty sure I just went with the default (Volume Locking First). This was on a Test VM with a 20 gig hard drive, to a 40 gig hard drive, (both virtual) so it's not relative to your setup speed...

You could just use Windows 7 backup. It works pretty well, and saved my SageTV box a couple of times. Pro even let's you send to a network target.

I can't speak for devices like the WD one, but XBMC has the coverart/info mechanism built in. Not to mention the many many other ways you can customize it if desired.
