Ubuntu 12.04

The final server build drops this month and I am wondering if anyone is using it yet.

I need to change my distro as I am wanting to try to make use of dvbhdhomerun which supports the prime.

I have compiled the drivers in 12.04 inside a VM so I know it will load. My plan is to make use of the generic tuner plugin for channel changes.

Wow, support for the prime sounds cool. After my "teaser" Comcast internet-only rate expires, I may look into actually getting cable as I expect it might actually lower my bill. I look forward to hearing how well this works for you.

As to 12.04: I installed a desktop last week running edubuntu for my 6 year old with the 12.04. The only connection w/sagetv is that it was my old SageTV server... Sorry!

Sadly for me... Canonical has messed up so badly with Gnome 3 that I can barely use the OS that I've come to love so much I'll probably just upgrade to 12.04 to see if Gnome is somewhat usable, and if not, then I'll be a Linux Mint fan

I have never been able to stand Gnome, even back in the 2.x days. They were always UI fascists. Back in 2001 when I converted from ctwm to a "real" desktop environment, I found that neither KDE nor Gnome implemented the window-management shortcuts I'd grown used to from TWM (alt+mouse1=move, alt+mouse2=resize, alt+mouse3=iconfiy). Hell, they were hard-wired into my brain after 13 years of use.. I opened bugs (*with* patches) in both projects to allow the configuration that I desired. KDE accepted my patch, but Gnome closed it saying it violated their design guidelines, or some such nonsense. So I've been a KDE user for the last 11 years.

Anyway, the point of this reply was to say that I've been happily using Ubuntu for years with KDE via Kubuntu. So if you're a Gnome hater, check out Kubuntu or Xubuntu before moving off Ubuntu entirely.

Yeah, I'm actually using KDE now (since the 11.10 release) and it's OK... I'll totally agree that the Gnome maintainers are UI fascists There are features of KDE that I like, but overall, I still liked Gnome better... until 11.10

I decided to keep this in the Ubuntu 12.04 thread even though I'm not seeing much for general install discussions so far.
I'm planning a new install and will probably be moving to Ubuntu from OpenSuse and have some basic install questions (I'll be installing via the tarball on 64 bit).

Since I'll be starting with a fresh install and haven't begun that yet, is there any reason/advantage to create the default user as "sagetv"?
When installing on Ubuntu via the tarball are the storage directories automatically created?
When installing on Ubuntu via the tarball is the startup script automatically created?
Since the install method for 32 bit libs has changed are others getting by with just libc6:i386 and zlib1g:i386 (I don't need HomeRun support) or are there others than I should add? (I know I can check the error log but just wondering).
Have any of you tried the Duinsoft repository for installing Oracle Java?
And last, which directories/files of my existing can I safely copy (or should copy) over without causing issues on the new install?

It is nice to use a separate user keep track of sagetv resources & to add access to tuner cards, and to limit damage in case of a breakin. I don't think it is required to use that user, but I would not use root.

I don't think either of these are created. You may want to just save the startup script you are using now.

You also need libm:i386, but it may be a dependency of libc.

I give SageTV its own 32-bit java installed in the SageTV home directory, and not managed by any package manager. It is 1.6.x, so old that it is still from Sun.

When I moved from 10.04 on my old machine to 11.10 on my new machine last fall, I copied over everything, including the special java & my /etc/init.d/ startup script. If you setup your NIC to use the MAC address of the NIC on the old box, then you do not need to re-register SageTV. So that is a good thing to copy over as well.
