Possible PVR setup

Hello, everyone.

I need some feedback on an idea I have for a PVR/DVR system using SageTV. Lantronix has a USB server, the Ubox 2100, that supports isochronous (time critical) devices. In this particular case, A/V. Also, at CES, Hauppauge introduced a USB HD capture device to be released during the 1st Qtr of this year. Now, I am thinking that I could connect the Hauppauge device to the Ubox and stream the A/V to my pc for recording and playback using the SageTV media extender. What do you think?

Why not connect the Hauppauge device directly to the PC via usb?
There is already a thread about the component capture device.

Through the Ubox, the Hauppauge would be virtually connected to the pc. This would allow me to have my pc in another room instead of next to my tv (fan noise). I have a DirecTV H20 and would like to record from it. Here is a short video on the Ubox: http://www.mavromatic.com/archives/000656.asp

The PC doesn't need to be next to the TV for recording. It just needs to be near your DirecTV STB, not only to capture the output but also so that Sage can change the channels as needed for recording purposes. Once you've given Sage control of that STB, you won't be using to watch TV anymore, so there's no reason to keep it in your TV room (unless that's the only room in your house with a satellite feed).

The two places with a satellite feed are the LR and BR. The house is wired with CAT6 and I am hoping to use this medium instead of pulling in more coax to the network closet to install the sat. receivers there.

Thanks for the reply!

my first thought about this Ubox is the ability to hook a DVD or Blu-Ray drive to it via a USB external enclosure, and place it next to the HD extender. Now you have a DVD/Blu-Ray drive for you HD Extender, provided SageTV will support Blu-Ray since HD-DVD seems to be the loser in HD format war.

In the Ubox manual, it is rated to stream A/V from 12-15Mb/s, so I don't know if a Blu-Ray or HD DVD drive will work through it.

But again, getting the HD output from the STB into Sage is only half the problem. You also have to get channel-changing signals from Sage into the STB, typically via IR blaster. How are you planning to remote that?

The H20 STB has a usb port and its my understanding that it can be controlled thru that. The Ubox has 2 ports. I would connect the Hauppauge to one port and the H20 to the other port using just a regular usb cable for changing channels.

I'm not aware of Sage being able to change channels over USB except for an R5000-modded box. And for that I think they also modify the Sage TV program and provide their own version of the software.

There's the Paterson Tech TV Translator, which I presume is what he has in mind. No idea if it will work over Ubox though.

Not correct. The R5000 uses standard Sage software with a special Sage-compatible version of the R5000 software that turns the R5000 into a network encoder.

I was not aware of this. Learn something new every day.

I knew there was something special in the way of software that was needed with the R5000. Probably if I had purchased one I would have looked a little closer into how it worked. I almost went that route but decided on the HDHomerun and receiving HD locals.

According to the Ubox manual, the pc will see the usb devices as being directly connect to it (pc). So, if the usb device will work being connected physically to a pc, it will work virtually also. If this is true, then, during SageTV setup, these usb devices should be detected, right? At least theoretically.
