help with avi

Hi all. I have an .AVI film that i just moved to my SageTV and it won't play it. When i go to Video Details this is what it is telling me.

Format: AVI(MPEG4-Video 9:5 576x320@25fps, MP3/224Kbps@48kHz Stereo)

File Size: 1.25GB

Whenever i try to play it i get this really awkward sounding noise and it plays it almost like it is going through a picture slideshow. Anyone know what i need to do or convert the file to in order to make it work? Thanks.

2 suggestions

use Gspot on the file to figure out which codec is was encoded with and then check you have that codec installed

use AutoGK to convert it to something else

so are you saying that i need to have the codec on the computer I am playing the video file from?

for example, if the file is encoded in xvid or dvix, i would need those codecs on the COMPUTER the file is in...not my sagetv player. correct?

SageTVplayer is supposed to play xvid and divx there is no need for extra codecs. Make sure under videos/audo settings the MPEG4 playback is set to SageTVPlayer. If it is set to DIRECTSHOW then you need the codecs installed.

PS Also if you have an older video card and are running WMR9 switch over to overlay and you should get video. Sometimes SageTVPlayer and WMR9 do not play nice together.

Avi Not Playing Check Off list. This list I use with my users that I support their systems.

1. Sound No Video Check to see what player you are using.

A. If you are using SageTVPlayer and are getting Audio no Video and are using WMR9 switch to overlay and try video again. If you prefer using WMR9 then you need to install FFDSHOW.

2. Playback Error in Video. This can be 2 things.

A. If You are using DirectShow as your Mpeg4 player then the correct codecs are not installed.

B. You can try to Switch to SageTvplayer to play MPEg4 files.

C. If you still get playback errors then you need to install the codecs... then use DirecTshow as your audio/video player.

I am having this problem in sageTV.

How do I tell what "Player" I'm using?

I don't have an MPEG4 player setting under Video/Audio settings.

I have .avi files that I can play in another app (using XVID decoder).

Thanks.

btw - i am on sage v6.1.9.146
