Question NewB problem PCI versus PCI-E

Hi Everyone,

I pulled a newB move. I ordered a Hauppauge 2250 from Amazon.com. Thinking that I would get 2 analog cable connections in my HP D530 server. Unfortunately, this card is a PCI-E card and my slots are all PCI. Can anyone first suggest how I can make this work? I'm pretty sure that it won't because on the card's installation instructions it said that it is made for an express slot not a PCI slot.

Second, can anyone suggest a similar card that will use a PCI slot? I wanted to get 4 analog cable connections to this box.

Thank you for any suggestions!!!!

PJ.

Exclamation Direction

Well, I've decided that the ONLY way to go is to get two Hauppauge 1600 cards. That cuts my record/watch channels to two. Well, next time I build one of these things, I'm going to get a server with more power and PCI-e slots. That's what I get for trying to build it on the cheap.

If you are trying to do it on the cheap, why not look on ebay for an Hauppauge PVR500 or Avermedia Purity 500 MCE? Both are SD dual tuner only cards and many are dumping theirs due to switching to digital tuners and both cards are PCI only.

FYI: There's an Avermedia Purity 500 MCE on ebay right now for 24.99 and 10 bucks shipping (buy it now).

I also just deployed a Hauppauge 2250, and also use both analog tuners for the analog cable TV channels. If you don't have PCI-E slots on your system board, then you will need to get a new system board that has PCI-E slots. Or return the card and get one that works with PCI slots with your current system board.

Eventually, you will want to upgrade your system board to the newer PCI-E technology. Unfortunately, when you make the upgrade, you may also need to buy a new CPU, memory, video card, hard drives, and power supply too, if you old gear won't work with the new system board.

Check NewEgg and review sites to determine which new system boards will work with your CPU, memory, video card, hard drives, and power supply. Also check to make sure there aren't too many negative reviews. Almost every system board has some negative reviews, so you want one that has few negative reviews.

Make sure that the PCI-E slot that you need for the Hauppauge 2250 won't be blocked by your video card. The heatsink on my video card is pretty wide and blocks the adjacent slot. The Hauppauge 2250 uses a PCI-E X1 connector, which will work in any of the PCI-E slots.

FYI, the 2250 can only record 2 things at once as well (AFAIK).

I had this and an Hauppauge PVR500 and the image was better with the Avermedia. You shouldn't be disappointed.

yeah, for SD capture quality, the PVR-500 is about as good as you can get, especially if you take the time to adjust the levels. I still use one for the bulk of my recording, until i get the cash to upgrade to more HD solutions..
