Whats the difference?

I am a bit confused. Can someone tell me what the difference is between the placeshifter and the client?

Thanks!

Neil

Placeshifter transcodes video files to decrease the bandwidth required for transmissoin so they can be streamed over the internet. Client runs everything locally (to where client is installed), uses its own codecs, and plays everything back at full bandwidth. If you want to use Sage from a remote location over the internet use Placeshifter. To playback from local network either will work, but client puts less load on the server. Also client is licensed per seat and Placeshifter is licensed per connection. Them's the highlights.

By the way, this question is one of many common questions answered in this excellent FAQ

I figured it was documented somewhere but I was just being lazy and posing the question.

Is any placeshifter liceneses given with the server? How can one see how many connections via placeshifter are licensed?

Does the mobile web interface use this for steaming or is that another thing?

If by "this" you mean placeshifter then the answer is no.

PS Licence

I thought you got a Placeshifter licence with the WHS installation of SageTV Server.

You don't get one with the standard Windows version for sure.

You do (get one with the WHS version). Essentially, when you purchase a SageTV Media Server, you get the backend and a frontend license. For normal Windows that means the included local/desktop UI that you normally launch. Since WHS does not (normally) provide a desktop, the WHS version allows one Placeshifter connection "free". I don't think you actually get a Placeshifter key when you buy Sage for WHS, it's just the WHS version allows one placeshifter connection without the need for entering an extra key.

Correct. And the WHS version only works with WHSv1. WHS 2011 has to use the regular SageTV server install that does NOT have the free connection.
