Good point. I know I'd really be begging for scraps with only $49.3 billion in cash lying around.

I don't understand why everyone is so displeased with this nexusq - for years I've been saying that the most important missing feature from Sage is a 25W amplifier.

Sure, that seems pretty clear. What makes me kind of worried, as a Sage user, is that it doesn't really seem like a DVR would really fit into that picture... And looking at the prices for movies/TV shows in the Play store, I'm not real inclined to think I'm going to be throwing out my cable in favor of purchasing individuals shows/movies anytime soon.

Maybe I'm off my rocker, but I'm going to throw this out there anyway... any chance this could wind up being a client/extender setup? If you take that into account, the price isn't all that bad, given that it's really a full PC. They may have called it a server, but it should do fine as a client, too.
Maybe we could hack SageTV to run on it? Google did say they designed it to encourage "general hackability".

But like GoogleTV, without local/network file play back, that doesn't really help. Unless they can actually get some decent streaming support on it, unlike plain Android...

No Sage at Google I/O
So here we go, Google I/O coming to an end.. they didn't even talk up GoogleTV in any of their keynotes on day 1 or 2.. I once again feel like GoogleTV is just a pet project of Googles and they still are not taking it seriously.. and this also goes for their purchase of SageTV.. they purchased it, and then just play with junk until it ends up becoming vaporware or abandoned when its time to cut costs to make the budget look better for the stock price..
Over priced content in the play store, cloud content, etc - do not line up with SageTV's client/server model.. I feel its now in the hands of some other company to do what sage has already done.. Google promoting projects like Plex, etc - just makes me laugh, when they already have one of these types of services that would blow it away - if they would just release it..

Well, technically we are just seeing the results from the streaming company Google bought 2-3 years ago...

I listened to the latest podcast of The Verge and they were talking about the usability of the Q; sounds like a real mess.
![]() What shocked me though is a friend of a friend actually ordered one to play around with (that's got to be a small group of people). Could be Google has more in mind for this thing down the road, but I think it was an experiment in manufacturing for them more than anything. |

After thinking about this a bit more, I might actually buy one of these things if Google opens it up to third-party developers. Basically, it might be worth $300 to me if it supports Pandora. I'm not sure how likely that is...

For me, it probably comes down to being able to run music apps like Pandora and Spotify on the thing. I'm sure its possible to get those apps running, but you may have to hook up the Q to a TV and attach a keyboard/mouse to it. I would want to be able to control Pandora/Spotify from my phone. And, I would want to be able to sync Pandora on multiple Nexus Qs. I suspect that level of support would require Google's cooperation, and its not clear they'd be interested in providing that level of support. |
