I'm just thinking about creating a Linux Sage client for the first time, to get some at-home experience with Linux (I use it at work, but not at the System Admin level). Given what I've read about the Linux Sage software authenticating keys to some server, if I find someone to buy a Linux client key from, am I likely to find that I'm out of luck if I have to rebuild my client in the future? Are you folks more concerned about that on the Linux side?

I have a hunch (totally my opinion) if Sage ever deactivated the Linux activation server they would create an updated release of the Linux version that doesn't require activation.

Thanks, Will. Based on the way they've conducted themselves, I would think so too.

license server down again?

The motherboard on my server was killed by a power surge, so I'm rebuilding on new hardware. However, when I try to activate the license key, I get this:

License Key File: activkey
Public/Private Key Generation Directory: .
Loaded SageTV's global public RSA key.
Establishing network connection to the SageTV License Activation Server...
Error with license activation: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused

Is the activation server down again?

Do you know the MAC address of the old server? Do you still have the old SageTV directory? If yes to both, then you can just set the MAC address of the new server to be the same as the old server, and it should work without re-registering.

I didn't think I'd be able to get the MAC address from the old server since it would no longer boot, but fortunately there was a sticker on the network interface showing MAC address. And also fortunately the disks in the old server did not go up in smoke with the motherboard. So I did as you suggested, and I'm back in business with recordings intact. Thanks!

Send a note to support. I am sure it will be fixed.
