Tried sage 7 again, same epic fail

I tried Sage 7 about a year ago and it was totally broken. Video files wouldn't play, the spinning wheel of death would go for 30-60 seconds and then give an error message.

So I thought I'd try 7 again today.

Stopped sage 6 service, rar'd the whole folder as a backup.

Installed 7. Started the service. Launched the interface. Into setup, advanced, apply all updates to 7.1.9.7

Went into the program guide and tried to play live tv. After a 5-10 second pause it started playing. Pressed stop, went into the recorded files to see if they would play. Immediate error message, failed to render 0x000 etc etc. Tried another, spinning wheel of death forever. Had to shut down Sage with task manager. Reloaded, now Live TV fails to play. Spinning wheel of death for any recorded files.

Reboot. Perhaps clear out any "cobwebs". Nothing works, just the endless spinning wheel of death.

Play around with various settings, EVR, VMR9, ATI as decoder, sagetv decoder. Totally, utterly broken.

Stop Sage 7 service. Control Panel, add/remove, uninstall sage 7. Installed Sage 6, unpack rar'd backup over installed files.

Works perfectly as always. Live TV and recordings play instantly, never a spinning wheel for anything. Oh well.

System Info-

WinXP SP3
Intel c2duo, Asus P5Q, 4gb ram, 4tb hdd
ATI 3870

When I upgrade I always start with a fresh properties file. I even start with a fresh Wiz.bin until I have everything setup the way I want. Same import and recording folders etc. Then I copy the old wiz.bin back to the updated SageTV folder. Reboot and let it upgrade the wiz.bin to the new version (can take hours potentially the way I do it). Never had any problems when I do it this way that are not cause by me - missing a setting I use to have that I need etc. I do it this way because some settings for earlier version might have been done to get good recordings/playback that are not needed for new versions of SageTV and could actually cause problems in newer versions. Some people just do an inplace upgrade and don't experience any problems. I like to start fresh to clear up old settings that I might have forgotten about that would just cause me new problems.

Yep. Only keep the wiz.bin. I'd uninstall sage v6, delete the sagetv folder (except the wiz.bin), then install v7 and put the wiz.bin back. If that doesn't work, you have some decoder issues.

Using 3 HDHR's. Forgot to say I deleted everything in the sage folder except wiz.bin/bak after making my rar backup so it was "clean". Does sage 7 run better on windows 7?

The other really annoying thing about Sage 7 is that it takes upwards of 20 seconds to load the interface. I prefer to use XBMC for avi/mkv viewing so every time I switch it takes way too long to load sage. Sage 6 loads in ~5 seconds.

Much. The built-in decoders typically do the trick.

I rarely quit my SageTV client completely; just minimize it to the system tray (maybe that's a Vista/W7 thing?)

Not to be too blunt, but you realize Sage hasn't changed a bit for the last year, so there's really no reason to expect anything different than last time you tried it unless you're planning to put some more effort into figuring out what's wrong in your configuration.

Sounds a lot like Albert Einstein's definition of insanity...

Come to think of it, it also sounds like me trying to get every single new version of the Colossus driver to work reliably...

I've always just installed the new version over the old, and never had issues with an update. 2 of my 3 servers started at v6 and are all on v7. But, on all of them, the machine is mainly a server, client is mainly used to change setting, not playback.

I am having issues on my new client, but it's only with HD VC-1 files, everything else is fine using the Windows built in codecs.

Are your mkv/avi files located on another server? If so make sure you remember to give the sage service the correct login info for that machine, or it won't play them (at least that's what I always had to remember to do since my movies are stored on a seperate unraid box).
