alternatives to USB-UIRT yet?

I have been using a usb-uirt for about 3 years now, and I have to say I am getting tired of replacing them. For $50 you would think they would last longer than 1.5 years or so.

My first one, the two "extended channels" stopped working (the ones that use the plug in hole not the main emitter). I figured it was a config problem but I just couldn't get it to work. Finally after hours of messing with it I ordered a new one and it just worked, so it was defiantely a hardware problem. That was about 1.5 years ago now.

THe one I have now is doing something similar. The two extended channels are working just fine but the main emitter piece has stopped working. No changes on the server and based on past experience I believe I have more hardware problems.

SO now that I am looking at buying yet another one... are there any other alternatives out there yet? I used to use firewire to change channels, but my fios boxes don't ahve FW ports.

I have a total of three STBs, one is HD and runs to my HD-PVR, the other two are SD and run to a PVR-500. I also have a HDHR but that of course doesn't need a blaster.

I just want something that works reliably for more than 18 months.

Mine's 2+ years old, and the only time it doesn't work, is when it's pointed the wrong direction.

Could your external LEDs be drawing too much current?

with SageTV 7 beta 12 some of us have been having fun with our USB-UIRT's

Hello,
With SageTV 7 beta 12 some of us have been having fun with our USB-UIRT's ... I unplug it and replug it and restart SageTV and then it starts working again.

The dropouts have been very intermittent ...

My USB-UIRT on the server is probably over five years old ... and working smoothly.
My USB-UIRT on my SageTV Client is the one that has been working intermittently and it's around 3 years old ... (and only started acting up with beta 12)

Bobby

that is a very interesting idea... I will check his site and see if he offers specific LEDs too... when I buy my next usbuirt.

I've never had a USBUIRT go bad. Just stopped using them early this year when I switched to firewire, but before that they were perfect for years.

i've been using a Microsoft MCE Blaster / Remote combo with Sage and its been working great for years. Prior to Sage I used it with my MCE 2k5 setup for a couple years.

Never had an issue, just have to run LM Remote Keymap in the background to support using it with Sage.

Supports 2 blasters and is an IR receiver for MCE 2k5 Remote and Keyboard.

Just thought I'd add, that I've also been using the USBUIRT with external emitters for about 3 years with no hardware issues.
