I went back to 6.10 as well, it seems to have a slower memory creep than later versions did, but still it's climbing. Hasn't maxed out yet though...

Mine has remained steady it has not peaked over 400 meg ... with Java 7 it would have been up to 600 meg by now and rising. Over all I am very pleased.
I haved these server plugins installed. .. on my server BMT JETTY SJQ3 WEb Server One Time Favorite MC2XML

503 Meg does not seem high at all when you have extenders and all your plugins.. I am sure that will drop when java garbage collection runs... I would not worry about it if I were you unless I run out of memory.

Good point, do you know by any chance when the garbage collector runs?
At the moment all my extenders are off (Unplugged)...

Don't know ... but If i were you I would plug in everything fire them up ... stress test the server see what happens.

The correct answer is probably "Whenever it needs to". However you might try entering detailed setup and then exiting. That was what caused sage to write the properties file in earlier versions so it is possible it might also trigger a GC. Otherwise you could try to force it with a System.gc() call in java or "java_lang_System_gc" call in the STV code somewhere. And Opus4 may be able to tell you a better way.

I believe if you go to System Info in Sage and hit the Delete key it cleans up the Java memory.

Slap me with a kipper if I'm talking rubbish!I did what you suggested, and the JVM Heap Size quoted in the System Information page does change when you hit the delete key. Mine went from Used/Total/Max of 320/360/832 to 95/360/832 The thing that I notice though is that the SageTVService is still using all of the MB that it was before, so at this moment mines on 401,612. If I turn the extenders back off and on again the 'Used' number will grow again, but the SageTVService usage will stay the same until the 'Used' gets to be around the same mark as where the service is, and then more restarts will make it go up further - if that makes sense - effectively reusing the spare memory thats already been allocated to the SageTVService until there's no more, and then it will grab more from the system. This was just a quick play around I've done in the last 5 minutes, I'll have to do some proper testing when I get the chance later. |

I think people are forgetting that Java keeps whatever memory it grabs. There are a lot of posts about this on the forum, but here are a couple from an older topic on supposed memory leaks, posted by Narflex and stuckless.
Most people aren't seeing memory errors. But, if you really are running out of memory & getting memory errors in the debug log, then get rid of all plugins, run that way for a while, then try adding in one plugin at a time until you start seeing memory errors again. - Andy

Hello... Thanks for ALL your interest & help... I feel better knowing that others are having the same issues, but I wish that none of us had them
... I did go back about 10 months & restored a previous image to my server that included an older version of Java but still the latest version of Sage... Probably the same Java version that came with Sage... I am STILL seeing this memory increase... BUT... SO FAR... it is hovering at 500Mb... Ha... Still seems like a lot but if it holds there that would be something new... FYI, I am running Win 7 Pro and have absolutely NO plugins... and no decoding going on... Just a simple clean install of Sage with OTA stations... and 2 HD200's and 2 HD300's... they do get a pretty good amount of usage each day and using them makes the memory usage climb... I will report back in a few days to let you all know if I am going PAST the 500Mb mark and if my server then locks up like it did in the past at apx 1Gig... Perhaps it will be holding now... It sure seems odd that at one time there were NO memory climbing issues of any noticeable degree... We will see what happens...

500 MB is minuscule with the extenders you are running. If I was you I wouldn't even sweat it. The only time you have to worry if you are getting out of memory errors. If you have your java Heap set above 500mb why worry?

At this time with the old image restored I did NOT set any Java Heap size... Just testing it as it comes out of the box... Also... Please explain EXACTLY how I can tell if I have Java Heap Issues... I don't know how to tell... I do have knowledge using the Java Control Panel on how to put in some lower and upper Java limits... I forget the codes but I have them written down somewhere... but as for KNOWING that Jave Heap has been exceeded... How does one know that for sure when it happens???... I know that when my server use to get the SageTV Memory usage to around 1Gig then EVERYTHING would freeze up SOLID... the solution was to unplug the server and reimage... at one time I had NO ISSUES for a year... but you are right... if this holds now at 500 or even a bit higher and my server does not freeze up then I am OK... I know I have these 4 HD200/300 but only 2 are EVER used... but they are all connected... We will see what happens with this older image installed... Thanks...

BTW... THANKS for ALL your input on this matter... This forum NEVER lets the members down... Always positive & upbeat participation & solutions... I am always hoping that Google/SageTV finally comes out with some product that allows us to continue with the functions we have & migrate to even more... But... A lot of time has gone by & there is an open forum to sell & trade so I am thinking this is a done deal... So be it... OK... Here is what I did... One of the members mentioned a way to uninstall Java and uninstall SageTV and then reinstall both and NOT lose any SageTV settings... Well... I uninstalled Java via the windows function... and then uninstalled SageTV using the SageTV software itself... and to my surprise ALL the functions of SageTV were left intact... So I just reinstalled SageTV and was ready to go... No reconfiguration of SageTV was required except that bit where you update the STV or whatever it is called... Totally Painless... So now I have the ORIGINAL Java 1.6.0_10-B33 installed... Memory is now staying under 400Meg... The server is happy... and I have Java updates turned OFF... BTW... You need to have admin privileges to get the Java Ctrl Panel to STICK on the NO updates request... That is all for now... We will see what happens down the road... Thanks a lot for all your participation... It is appreciated...

I just ran across this thread - I have been having this problem for a while myself (several months). I briefly mentioned it somewhere a while back but didn't really follow up on it because I've been busy and it hasn't been as much of an issue in the summer (with less shows being recorded/watched). Every so often, if I'm down in the basement near the server, I just stop and restart Sage Service with the control panel, and the problem is gone.
Somewhere back early this year, I was getting short on disk space, and, for the first time, started setting some favorites to auto-convert, using the built-in Sage function. That seemed to be when I started seeing the issue. Of course, right around that same time (coincidentally), my wife started using the Podcast Recorder plugin in conjunction with PlayOn. So, while I don't know what is causing the rising memory usage, nor have I had time to look into it, I suspect it's one of these two things (or even both). I was noticing sluggishness even on my HD300. When I noticed it, I was finding my memory was frequently in the 700k-1000k range. I only had it go so high that it crashed once or twice. A restart of Sage Service always fixed it. I can say that my memory increase had nothing to do with extender usage. I went away on vacation for a week (unplugged all my extenders) back in April, and within a day or two of having left, every recording was completely messed up, stuttering, unwatchable. After being gone about 4 days, I tried to watch something via the mobile webserver remote streaming, and saw that it was all messed up, so I used Splashtop to restart service. The recordings for the next few days (until we got home) were fine. I recently added another hard drive to my server for recordings (just in time for the Olympics, of course), so maybe I'll take off all the auto-convert settings and see how things do. My wife goes through spurts where she will go crazy with the podcast recorder, so maybe after I get all the auto-converts eliminated, I will have her record a bunch of stuff and see if that appears to trigger it.

I'm running Java 1.6.0_24-b07. I rarely reboot my system or stop the Sage service. (Current uptime is about 31 days 9 hours.)
The current memory usage is 1,131,000K. (Java heap is set to 1GB). None of my extenders have any lags of "flaky" behavior so I don't particularly care about the memory usage.

I just want to thank you guys specifically tmiranda! I downgraded my java to the .24 release and I am about 600 megs of memory. I did just reboot but it is pretty good. I think a lot better but time will tell.
I think another one of my major problems is that a larger portion of my recordings and my videos are on unraid with its disks spun down. When I watch a video or recording and it is over I get a long pause waiting for the listing to populate the listings again. Also I did adjust my raid card which wasn't writing back instead of through and I think my write speeds are significantly improved at least by testing with crystal disk. The tweaks continue! Thanks, Neil |
