What does a DVB-s card allow

Guys,

Please excuse my ignorance. I currently have an HDhomerun and 3 analog tunners with 3 motorola recievers.

What does the Genpix SkyWalker1 allow me to do that I currently cannot? Will I be able to input encrypted HD channels from my cable provider. I currently get clear unencrypted QAM with the HDHomerun, but would love to get ESPN HD, TNTHD, etc.

A Dvb-s card is used for receiving satellite broadcasts. It is not very useful in North America though because most satellite broadcasts are encrypted and there is no legal way to capture them without a satellite providers(Dish or Directv) equipment.

There is new stuff on the way that should provide a way to capture premium HD content.

I have been reading through these threads trying to find setup info for my DVB-S card and saw your post, there is a ton of unencrypted content up on the many satellites beaming programming to North America.

Trying to get Dish or Direct TV with a DVB-S card is illegal but that is only a small part of what is up there, if anybody wants to get a better understanding of what you can get try going to a website that helps people with Legal Free To Air satellite. Satforums.com and Satelliteguys.us both have F.T.A . satellite forums. A big C-band dish is very usefull for FTA but a 90cm Ku dish can still get you plenty.

I have been reading more about this but have not gotten around to it yet. I am thinking about setting up a test system and seeing if there is any content worth recording. I guess the next step would setting up a network encoder

I also use a set top box Traxis DBS 3500 to Blind scan satellites for feeds, you never know what you might find. I have a TechnoTrend S2-3200 in my Sage box but I have had a DVB-S card in a HTPC for the last 5 1/2 years and I think it is worth it.
