New EVR0To255Range Registry Entry

For some reason I can't seem to get this option to work. Where in the registry would this be located in Vista x64? I find a couple registry entries for Frey Technologies but this is the one that looks like it has most of the options:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Frey Technologies\SageTV\DirectX9

I've put EVR0To255Range there and set it to 1 but it doesn't seem to make any difference in the output. Either way I get washed out video with gray instead of black.

Thanks.

That setting is included in my settings tool. It should work on x64 (it was compiled as a x86 app) so it should end up in the correct place.

The virtual store is where settings end up when a non-admin account tries to write to the registry, you shouldn't modify that section directly.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. The only reason this has become an issue for me is that with the addition of subtitle support it seems that vobsub support is only available if always_use_dshow_player is set to false with EVR enabled. And for some reason I can't get SRT style subs to work at all. But, with that set to false the YUV->RGB conversion doesn't work as it should.

If you're not using dshow for playback the EVR isn't used (so this setting won't do anything).

I don't understand that as EVR is set as my renderer. But if I set always_use_dshow_player to true it tries to find a proper filter for the subtitles and finds none. Graphedit tries to insert vobsub in the graph but that doesn't seem to work properly. And since it's so old I'm not sure vobsub works properly with Vista, particularly with Vista x64. If you know of a Vista compatible vobsub/srt compatible DX filter that would be great.

the EVR is a directshow renderer. if you're not using directshow for playback the EVR can't be used to render it.

have you tried vsfilter?

Hmmm... I thought I had VSFilter, otherwise known as DirectVobSub, installed. Apparently it was either not installed or not installed properly. Looks like it may work now. I'll try it when I get home as video doesn't work quite right over Remote Desktop.

I did some limited testing via remote desktop and it appears that GraphEdit inserts the subtitles properly into the video. For some reason SageTV isn't inserting DirectVobSub at all into it's graph so no subtitles are being shown when always_use_dshow_player is set to true. The two graphs otherwise appear identical. With Haali being called for the splitter, Cyberlink Video Decoder for the video and AC3Filter for the audio.

I realize this video is probably a bit odd. It's actually the video, audio and subs ripped directly from the DVD and put into an MKV container. The subs are in both SRT and graphical vobsub format with the SRT being the first set as the default subtitle stream.

It's odd that this works perfectly in GraphEdit but not in SageTV when its set to strictly use DShow.

Thank you very much. Changed the option in Haali last night and it worked like a charm! Now if only they'll start supporting graphical subtitles on the HD200. Although, the SRT style subtitles look worlds better on my HDTV.

I've been using VobSub. There are several programs out there that have OCR for subtitles but its the only free one that seems to be able to deal with an IDX/SUB subtitle set. Most of the other free ones seem to only deal directly with the VOB's.

Also, VobSub seems to be the only subtitle ripper that is able to deal properly with multi-angle DVD's. Both VSRip and SubRip get the timing wrong on multi-angle DVD's such as Star Wars and Return of the Jedi. Not sure why. But both programs seem to no longer be in development so it will probably never be fixed in either one.

It's actually the SubResync program that's included with VobSub.
