Able to control dtv box while in RF mode

Hello,

I just got my new H21 Directv box and I'm sticking it down in the utility room in my basement because its going to run the tv in our bedroom. I put it down in the basement because we don't have room near the tv in our bedroom to place the box (tv is mounted on the wall) so I decided I'd get the RF compatible remote and use that to change channels from the bedroom.

I got this grand idea to build my own pvr and use Sage to record some shows we watch. My pvr machine will only do recording, no playback so I decided to stick the machine right down in the utility room next to the H21 box.

My question is, if my box is on RF mode, will I still be able to use Sage to tune channels to the shows I want to record using the Serial to USB method that I see described here? I'm hoping there is a way that I'll be able to get Sage to change channels whilst still being able to use RF from up in bedroom.

Should not be a problem. My bedroom directv box is split to also send signal to kitchen and laundry room. SageTV is connected by usb - serial at the bedroom. I can still control the directv box functions via rf remote and blasters in the 3 rooms although I've noticed I am more and more just using the SageTV and placeshifter from the various sets.

Anybody know what the biggest monitor is out there. I don't think I need any tuners in my screens anymore.

Computer monitors cost more per inch than a tv anyways, in most cases, so you wouldn't be saving anything. Just get the screen you want, and ignore the tuner.. ;-)

Awesome, thanks a lot for the info. I was worried I wouldn't be able to use this setup.

Well, there will still be limitations if you are trying to have sage control the box, and you still ALSO control the box. Sage has no way of knowing if you are actively watching something in your bedroom, and may decide it wants to record something else.
