Upgrading from Version 6 to Version 7
I currently use version 6.6.2 and want to try out version 7 but have some questions that I hope someone can answer:
1. Can I install version 7 into a different folder alongside version 6 without uninstalling version 6 so I can switch between the two if I have problems with V7? 2. I use the web interface on version 6, do I need to download/install anything extra to use the web interface on V7 or is it "standard"? 3. I use XMLTV importer and LM Gestion EPG importer with V6, does this work ok with V7? 4. I use 3 x HD100 extenders with my V6 setup - will these just work with V7 or is there anything I need to do? Thanks. |

You need to update them to the beta firmware for them to work with V7. |

Upgrading from Version 6 to Version 7
Thanks for the guidance. If I have to make a clean switch to V7, I am wondering if the current beta is stable enough to go with or if I should wait for the formal release - any advice?

Once you fire up version 7 it upgrades the wiz.bin. When it completes it is NOT backwards compatible so be sure to make a copy just in case you need to revert. Sage also makes a copy for you, but it's worth being extra careful and making one yourself.

I think you should be safe just updating to the beta, I have been running it for a while now with no issues. If you are worried about loosing anything just copy the SageTV directory somewhere else on your PC.

One further question. I am proposing getting a BluRay drive in the PC that acts as the SageTV server. Is it possible to watch BluRay from any of my HD100 boxes?

The short answer is yes. BUT (there is always a but) to watch BD movies you have to install AnyDVD HD on your Sage server and list your drive as an import directory. And menu's are not supported. Search around and there is a lot of info about it.

You can also use DVDFab to rip them to your Movies import directory and skip AnyDVD. I've been doing it for a while and it works well as long as you have the space.

Thanks for everyones help.
I am about to get a new PC which will be my SageTV version 7 server. I am going to have a period of "parallel running" witn the old one on Ver 6, but how do I get the recordings transferred from my Version 6 hard disk to my version 7 setup so they appear in the SageTV recordings? |

Yes. V7 will automatically convert the database to V7 format. This is essentially what happens when you install V7 over top of an existing V6 setup. Once it's been converted, however, you can't then copy it back to a V6 server and expect it to work.

Thanks - that makes sense.
My new PC is going to be an Intel I3 with 4GB RAM running Windows 7 Home Premium - I am assuming that SageTV V7 will be happy on this platform? |

I made the switch yesterday and a couple of things I noticed.
If you have Directv and were using the Serial Control, you must set it back to Fast mode again. Second, if you had increased your JavaHeap size, you might need to change it again. I can't tell if its in a new place in the Registry, but it appears when you search for "JVMMaxHeapSizeMB", its now in 4 places within Vista's registry with the UAC turned off, as it was before the update. Changed it in only one of those entries. FWIW, I gave the new UI a try for 1-3/4 days, but gave up and went back to SageMC. Jeff |

You really ought to give the new interface a try. SageMC is on it's last legs. It's not going to be worked on in any significant way anymore. There are other interfaces on the horizon, but with the themes, and multitude of large and small plugins available for the sageTV7.stv, it can be actually quite usable. I, of course, understand the appeal of familiarity, but trust me, you'll have to let go of SageMC at some point. :-)

Fuzzy,
I know you're right and I really am trying to commit to the new UI, but it just feels inefficient to me. Its too busy of a screen, but not enough info, example too many icons without description, too many colors Buttons seem to different, they work forward but not backward example, using an extender remote's left arrow moves forward, but the right doesn't always move you back. I cannot tell what is to be selected, there doesn't seem to be enough contrast. I am continuing to test/use the new UI on a Placeshifter client on my office system while the main and bedrooms are back to the SageMC for WAF. Maybe playing with it more will work out! I know there have been numerous posts on the new UI. I'll shut up now. I'm old school, I was taught to to read words in school, not look at pictures/icons to determine what they meant. Bring back the TELETYPE. (It was only in CAPS )Jeff |

I have decided not to move to V7 until my new PC arrives in a week or so and will keep V6 running on my present PC. When the new PC (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit) arrives, I am not sure whether to install V6 first and then update to V7 or start afresh with V7 (I just bought a V6 to V7 SageTV upgrade). Not sure if it is "safer" to get V6 working with my wiz.bin from V6 and then install V7 or install V7 afresh and then copy over my old V6 wiz.bin file. Which would anyone advise as the best way?

Straight to V7, now questions asked. When it asks for your license info, just put in your V6 key then it will let you put in your V7 key. Copy in your wiz.bin and you'll be all set.
