Correct SageTV7 Upgrade Method?
I am evaluating the 21-day trial of version 7. I've been a v6 user for a few years and rather than just install version 7 over version 6, I would like to know the correct method. My version 6 directory has a lot of legacy plugins and junk and would like to start clean.
So is this the correct method: Stop the server Rename the SageTV directory. Install version 7 copy the version 6 wizbin file into the version 7 directory start the server. Is that all i need to do to maintain all my settings and recordings?

In a post that I read, they recommend that you copy the v6 directory and install over the original. That is how I upgraded to v7. But I did not have
but if you want to start fresh then your idea should work...I think. fortunately if it doesn't then you can simply uninstall v7 and rename the copy of the v6 directory.

What's in wiz.bin? Is the format the same for v6 and v7?
I want to perform a fresh v7 install, but I'd like to keep the information about my existing v6 recordings, ie, the date/time/info about each recording, watched or not, etc. Assume I configure the directories correctly in v7, will Sage automatically find the recordings, or do I need to copy this wiz.bin file to keep the meta-data info from v6? Thanks. |

The wiz.bin is the database of info about what you have watched in the past, what you have currently recorded, and what to record in the future. You will have to drop the old V6 wiz.bin in the new V7 install directory and Sage will udpate it to thet V7 format. There is a difference in the formats and Sage can transfer a V6 wiz.bin to the new format, but you can't go backwards.

Thanks for the info. So something like this:
1) backup bin.wiz 2) uninstall v6, nuke Sage directory 3) install new version 4) copy bin.wiz over. 5) start sage and configure it (tuner, channels, etc..) Does #4 need to happen after #5? ie, when sage starts, it sees the new bin.wiz, but I haven't configured it yet (tuner/channel is not setup). |

I would swap steps 4 and 5. I.e. run through the Config Wizard to set up sources, channel maps, and recording & import directories. Then quit Sage and copy over Wiz.bin before enabling the service.
Also in step 1, back up the entire directory. You have nothing to lose by doing so, and it gives you something to fall back on if things go wrong.

I wouldn't just backup the wiz.bin and nuke the Sage directory. I usually just zip up my sage directory prior to an upgrade/new install just in case. If things blow up and go horribly wrong I want, at minimum, a path back to a working system even if it is with the old version. It's also nice to have an old sage.properties file to have as a reference for resetting things like tuner merits that don't have config options in the gui

You could edit the properties files and take out everything except your drive paths and tuning devices. copy the the wiz.bin and the remote codes directory. Delete or move every thing else in the directories. You would then have a new install with everything configured and no plugins. Properties file will regenerate items that are missing and incorporate the settings that remained. Minimum reconfig. Then install v7

thanks
Sage has done a nice job of not requiring anything but the SageTV directory so it makes moving to a new system easy without having to mess with the Registry or other files scattered about. I really appreciate this.

so, I installed clean OS, after backing up wiz.bin and properties. Installed clean Sage 7, dragged over wiz.bin and properties from 6.6 (after duplicating all the original storage directory info into Sage configuration settings), and Voila! - all is well, even my folder structure. All shows seem present and accounted for.
And, my HD PVR remote seems to be more responsive with W7 and Sage 7. |
