Order ID = 62814

I really, really hope that this one is as reliable as my old PVR-250's that never once gave me a problem in 4 years. Especially since I swore not to ever buy another HD-PVR until it had proved itself in the wild for at least six months. When I say my butt was chapped by the USB model I'm seriously understating the pain I've suffered the last 3? years.

On the positive side it just cannot be as bad as the USB model. It just can't. <crossing fingers>

This will be my 1'st Hauppauge product since I bought a 350 on the basis that Sage could use its overlay function for the UI ..... didn't work so good - ended up using it like a normal capture card in the end with a PC client.

Fingers crossed this time....

Oh and I just hit 300 posts - wow I should have made that about 5 years ago - I need to stop being such a lurker!

Cheers

Mark

I certainly hope Sage has Colossus support in the works. It arrives in one to two weeks.

It'll be my first HD-PVR hardward I purchased. I was going to get around getting a USB one but never gotten to it.

I hope my current motherboard PCIe which have 1x and 16x can handle both cards on it.

I'm toying around with leaving dish at some point, which means my R-5000's would be going away. (one of 3 is already dead). So, in anticipation, and due to the lower price, I bought 2 of these. Hopefully they work well. If not, I can sell them for $40 off list and still break even.. ;-)

The price for me was $129.00 plus $8.50 shipping, the total cost was $137.50. I hope it will be more reliable than the HD-PVR.

The problem with the R5000 is that you're stuck with Dish Network. If they don't offer the programming you want or they jack up the price, then you are stuck. The HD-PVR and the Colossus gives you the flexibility to dump your content provider and switch. You might also still need a USB-UIRT if the Colossus IR blaster does not work correctly like the other Hauppauge products.

It's strange that the Colossus is not on the Hauppauge main page as a new product. You have to click on the Facebook link or web store link, then products to see the Colossus. The new Colossus product should be directly on the Hauppauge home web page. After clicking on the Colossus product on the home page, there could be a $40 off link to the Facebook link. These changes should be very easy for the webmaster. The Hauppauge marketing people must be on vacation or asleep.

I missed all the early "fun" with the hd-pvr, so I ordered 2 of these. Thanks Keith for the link, I am no FB friend but the price was still129 each.
P.S. When will sagetv support Colossus?

I wish we could afford one of these. I probably could have convinced the wife if we hadn't needed to get a new router.

I've only casually followed this thread. We still don't know about MPEG2 support in Sage, right?

Ordered. I have two HD-PVR's that are both rock solid but I would love to get rid any external boxes where I can.

Nope, it's just hopeful speculation that Sage might support it. I think there are quite a few people highly interested in knowing if they'll support it. Too bad we can't get a comment. nudge, nudge

My guess on MPEG2 support in the card itself (independant of Sage):

There are two video chips. An H.264 encoder that takes the pristine output of an A/D converter and creates H.264 video. The H.264 video can either be treated as the final output or sent to the transcoder chip and turned into mpeg2 video for final output.

If I am right then mpeg2 will never be as high quality as the H.264 for two reasons. 1) MPEG2 is not as efficient as H.264 and 2) compressed H.264 is the input of the transcoder not the pristine output of the A/D converter.

I am going off of SHS's description of the card that lists an H.264 encoder chip and a seperate transcoding chip for the MPEG2.
