Wall Wart alternative....
Thought I'd share this item I found at Parts Express...
150 Watt Switching Power Supply Not a bad price on clearance. I hope to replace all of the wall warts around my server with this. Anyone have link to a spec sheet or manual for it? |

Couldn't you also use a PC power supply - doesn't it output the same three DC voltages?

I tried using my sage server powersupply to power my HD PVR in an effort to have them shutdown when the server does. It immediately burned the hd pvr power input circuitry up. Had to buy a new one. It might work as a stand alone power supply.

Sometimes I wonder whether the "War of currents", if won by Mr. Edison, would have lead us today...a better world without the need of any AC/DC converters? Or maybe not...

DC doesn't really work for power transmission.

of course, but I was more thinking for a home usage perspective, think about home solar system very popular today, they generate DC, but then you have to have an inverter to feed you home 110/240v power grid which in turns need to be DC converted back to run your equipments...I know that transformers have the highest energy efficiency level, but still the heat they dissipate is energy which is inevitably lost...well transformed (as the I thermodynamic law) into heat...and you need coolers to dissipate the heat (more energy)

If you are talking HVDC, it most definitely does work (and may be the only solution) for special circumstances: (1) long distance transmission, approx. 300 miles or more, (2) under water cables, (3) interconnection of transmission grids where asynchronous interconnections are required such as interconnections between the eastern and western grids in the US and several other unique situations.
