How much money in your sagetv home system

I listed 500-1000 but that is partly because I keep asking for parts for Christmas / Birthday. I am still surprised my wife actually bought me a video card. then traded dad $200 and a 1Ghz PIII for a PIV 1.7Ghz back when that was saying something. Most of my systems have been when there was a crazy good deal including rebates. (damn I hate doing rebates though)
I would guess replacement costs would be closer to the 2000 mark

If I wern't feeling so lazy I was going to do one of those mastercard priceless things.

Alot of the upgrades I've done to my PC - nice case, quiet power supply, cable management, extra hard drive, etc. - all serve more purpose than just SageTV. So I'm actually under $500 for direct Sage-related costs.

The costs will skyrocket though, once I get my dedicated htpc put together.

Its really hard to put a number on SageTV alone because I don't use the computer(s) just for SageTV. And then there's the component upgrade cost such as a newer video card or bigger harddrives, which I probably would've done anyway regardless if I was using SageTV or not. So not factoring computer upgrades, and just account for SageTV specific components such as TV tuners, MVPs, Remotes/UIRT, and software licenses, I say its less than $1000. If I count in computer upgrades, then its probably around $2000.

But we know we are doing this as a hobby, so its a small price to pay.

LOL! Same here. I started out planning to re-use components. Then the more I read on what was best, the more I bought...wouldn't change a thing $1500-$2000, not including the Sceptre 37" LCD was my vote. This was my first HTPC.

My advice to you is this: Stay the heck away from Home Automation. I started off by wanting to set & display my receiver power/source setting/volume on the UI, figured as long as i've got this wonderful Sage Server just sitting there running 5% utilization, I may as well do something with it.

I've ordered $1000 in stuff in the last 7 days alone, on top of the [i don't want to know] amount in the past. I have a suspicion that all-in, i can turn my 100yr old craftsman house into a SmartHome for about $7-$10K. It'll probably take me 2 years all-in to get it to that level.

Man, all I wanted to do was not spend $300 on a Tivo...

Seeing some of these posts shows that it is great that Sage runs on a lot of low-end hardware, but I bet a lot of these folks complain alot about problems, etc. Low-end hardware is just that low-end and can cause major issues.

I have learned that a long time ago. I've probably spent about $2-3K and I am not done yet.

Man alive... easily more than $4000 at this point - some of that in "failed" client attempts for which I ended up selling the spare components off at a loss. Pushing the envelope with HD and the quest for a quiet client capable of handling the load has sucked up a lot of time and cash that it probably shouldn't have.

But then again, what price knowledge? I tell my wife it's tuition for staying ahead of the media curve.

And being able to say "oh! That's so adorable" when folks talk about getting their first Tivo is worth it... nothing like a little Alpha-male chest pounding when you break out the details on your rig.

God help me. I'm thinking about building another client for the now spare TV (5 year old RCA36 hdtv) we just moved in the mostly unused back bedroom/computer-room. Someone please stop me before I spend again

To late, I went down the recording only server game plan because 5 tuners and comskipwas killing my playback with cpu usage in the high 90's make playback unviewable. Now with a PC client everything is nirvana in the playback department.

Edit to add: I hope the rumors of a HD-MVP is true. It's a crime to just have SD on the RCA MM36110

At present the only items that are dedicated to the SageTV-only portion of my system are the Sage software and a PVR 500. Everything else is multipurpose, thus I put down < $500. Sage is but a small (but very heavily used) part of our home theater system.

That's how I got started. A very simple sagetv system with one PVR-250 an a 100 gig HD. Then a year later I went nuts and started to do upgrades and 2years later I have not stopped.

I'm a sucker for a nice looking HTPC case

I had a spare amd xp2600 w/ 512 meg & 2 250gig drives just lying around doing nothing. Actually, I got a new work laptop and I use that for EVERYTHING now so that desktop could be repurposed.

Only things I've added thus far are:

2 PVR 500's ($380)
1 Media extender (wireless - but using it wired (wireless sucks)) ($160)
1 client license (for my laptop) ($30)
1 SageTV Server ($80)
1 USB UIRT ($50)
1 Serial cable ($3)
1 StreamZap Remote for client PC ($30)

$733 so far.

In a few months I'll be adding 3 or 4 more media extenders, a couple of HD Tuner cards, HD antenna, and a SageClient PC capable of doing HD.
