Hey guys,

I'd like to add something to this as I am having trouble with getting WMA 5.1 playing natively in 5.1 on my receiver.

I have a sample 720p WMV clip. It has WMA 5.1 audio.

If I play this file in Windows Media Player 10, it streams out to my receiver as Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.

If I play this file in Sage, it's stereo.

I am using AC3 filter and on my other recordings and downloaded videos that contain AC3 audio, they all output properly (DD 5.1 and DD 2.0) within Sage. This is just something to do with WMA 5.1 audio.

You can all download this clip for your testing purposes, should you feel the need here (44MB):

Does anyone know how to get WMA 5.1 audio to output as 5.1 the same way Windows Media Player does?

Thanks!

You need to set it in the SageTV specific settings (would be SageTV intead of Common IIRC, it's been a long time since I went registry diving to get WinDVD crap working).

DVDs use Dolby Digital or DTS, 99.999% of recievers only understand one both of those. Further, S/PDIF can only carry stereo or data. To get 5.1 you need to package the audio into a bitstream (ie DD or DTS).

If you want to get 5.1 with WMV, first grab the latest AC3Filter (should be at least 1.20). Then on the system tab, check S/PDIF passthrough for AC3 and DTS. Under "Use AC3Filter for.." pick PCM (and any others you want, you'll probably want AC3 and DTS).

Then go to the main tab and check the "Use SPDIF" box and set Output to "AS IS (no change)".

That should result in AC3filter encoding any multichannel non-DD/DTS audio into full-bitrate DD on the fly.
