Have you tried without the Nvidia decoder?

I had similar stutters using SATA at first. I had to rejig things to make sure that my main capture drive wasn't sharing an IRQ with anything else - this meant disabling one of my network controllers and moving my drive to a different controller. Don't know if yours is the same problem...

No, I think generally a SATA drive is either seen as SATA or SATA2, and will auto-detect whether NCQ etc. is appropriate. Check it in Device Manager on the controller just like a PATA drive, but IME the options are always greyed out. They will go as fast as they can, i.e. faster than DMA5.

If you want to see reports and details on IRQ settings, disk speeds etc. on your PC, find and download "SiSoft Sandra Pro" - a great tool with all sorts of diagnostic and performance measurements.

I've tried it on the onboard sata controller and I bought an external SATA card that its currently running on. I would like to get the stutter issue sorted before tackling anything else (it was silky smooth before). In fact I just popped out at lunchtime and came back with a 400Gb PATA Barracuda, if that doesn't sort it, it will at least remove it from the equation.

That's one way of doing it - throw some money at it!

ive also noticed some crashing to desktop during watching of tv/recorded shows (using sagetv ui) not while sage is asleep/just recording.

while i am also using an nvidia card, and nvidia purevideo codecs w/ffdshow as some of the others i would also like to note that i didnt start experiencing any issues until 5.0.1. ive also tried 5.0.2 and experience the same random crashing to desktop.

i can almost guarentee sage will crash to desktop at least once a day. i havent sent in any logs at the moment i was waiting to see if anyone else reported any problems before i did so. im contemplating going back to 4.1.8 (the last version i tried without any issues) just to see if i could recreate the problems but havent done so yet.

so, this post is just to throw in another "ive got similar issues with a similar setup" into the mix.

hardware:
amd athlon xp 1.2ghz
512 meg kingston pc3200
asus a7n8x-x
nvidia gf4 ti4600 using tv-out
onboard sound
1 hauppage pvr250 (currently)
usb dlink wireless g lan adapter
logitech wireless mouse/keyboard

software:
sage tv 5.0.1 and .2
nvidia purevideo codec 1.02.150
ffdshow 20041012 (oct 12 2004 build)
run in fullscreen mode
3d acceleration enabled
vmr enabled
transparent menus enabled
default stv
java 1.5.0_06-b05

w/sage 4.1.8 rock solid stable, no problems what so ever, exact same setup, except for the fact that im using sage v5 instead of v4.

Just to update everyone. Sage sent me a fix to try yesterday. I installed it with no issues and ran good for about an hour last night. I've asked permission to post the file for others to try. Will keep everyone posted.

I've been running the same potential fix since Monday afternoon but I had a power outage yesterday so I still won't know for a few days if it worked for me.

You must have some pull with the sage folks, I started a conversation with the Sage Tech folks, They sent me two files and asked me to turn on Dr. Watson to catch the error when Sage Drops to the Desktop. This did nothing. I did notice that the Nvidia ProVideo may be causing the problem so I completely uninstalled Provideo.
Guess what Still Drops to Desktop but interval between crashes is much longer. I am running with out any customizations and I am at a complete loss . I thought it may be the machine it is running on but I have to rule that out since so many people are having the problem on so many different configurations. What are the Sage Folks up to .

Actually I was quite impressed with the response time on this. I submitted a bug report late on a Friday. By the following Tuesday they sent me a potential fix Even if it doesn't fix the problem it shows they are actively working on it.

The Fix is In

If you would like to test the fix that Sage has issued it can be found here. Look for the DVB-T patch near the top. I have not yet done any long term testing with it so your mileage may vary. Good luck!

This is the same thing Qian sent me on 5/8, I installed the 2 files and turned on DR. Watson ran fine for a while and then crashed. No log files were generated.

Just curious but are you running any modifications to the base SageTV3.xml.

I'm only using the 2 files. I am not using a modified SageTV3.xml file. Time will tell I guess if it makes a difference. The only "new" symptom I've seen is a recorded show I was watching stopped while fast forwarding and put me back to the Recordings menu. I re-selected the file and continued to watch.

Finally had a chance to let Sage run straight for a couple of days and it crashed again for me with the fix files installed. I reported it back to Sage. Will see what happens next. At least my hs_err....pid file wasn't empty this time.

I've got a suspicion that the crashing problem is related to Java 1.5.0_06. Can some of you test with other versions of Java to see if that helps? I'd recommend trying 1.5.0_05 first. Please let me know the results.
