I switched to the Sonic Cinemaster decoder two days ago. The fiancee had an issue yesterday (not all that clear on exactly what happened), but it's been up for at least 36 hours. With 5.0.2, I was now experiencing crashes at least every 24 hours.

I will also try another version of Java with the Nvidia decoders and see if that works as well.

Have any of you had this crash when running SageTV as a standalone app? (i.e. you're not using SageTV client and you're not using SageTV in service mode w/ the local UI connected to it)

Yes. I was running SageTV as a stand-alone app, and started up the service a week or so ago in hopes that I wouldn't always lose my shows when the UI crashed. I was still losing shows when it crashed, though. The UI would always be up; almost never in stand-by mode.

You're talking about a different issue then (I think). The 'crash to the desktop' issue doesn't affect the service at all. Do you have any hs_err_pid files in your SageTV folder? If so, send them to betatest at sagetv.com.

Something else I noticed but it was only since I tried the test fix sent out earlier. Sometimes, when fast forwarding through a show, the file would stop playing and drop to the recordings menu. Re-select the file and continue playing OK. One other thing I forgot to mention from the last crash. There was a hs_err file generated but it was 0 bytes.

SageTV runs as a service on a dedicated server in the basement. What limited time I've watched video on the server it hasn't crashed. If it's any help I can ftp up a recording that was playing when the crash occured.

I am using it like this. And yes I have this crash about once every couple of days when watching LiveTV or SageTV Recordings.

I will check for any hs* files and submit them.

The most recent one I have is from 4/30 - which might be when I started the Sage TV Service up again. Like AtariJeff said, though, all the recent ones I have are zero-byte files.

Still looking to see if anyone has had a crash like this since switching to Java 1.5.0_05....so far the theory that 1.5.0_06 is causing the crashes is still holding....

I don't know if it's wise, but I just opted to install the java 1.6.0 beta

I'll post back after a while if it's working well for me.

Since I completly reinstalled all Hauppauge drivers, Sage application and Nvidia Provideo Decoder on 5/12 I have had no crashes what so ever.
Hopefully that will remain the case.

Coincidence or not, I've had about 5 seemingly random lockups (thrice overnight, twice when pushing stop after playback ended) with 5.0.2 with no other changes to the system (I have not experienced this type of behaviour before in 1 year of 24/7 operation). I hoped it was related to 1.5.06 JRE which I've been using problem free for a while with earlier sagetv revs, but same problem occured with 1.5.05. It might be a hardware issue, but I haven't changed anything, temps are ok, etc. Some of the lockups were the bad full system kind, with hard reset required, others were just having to kill client with task manager. I'll be running memcheck and checking the drives again.

I've also experienced bizzarre behaviour with skipping songs: after a number of skips, it then refuses to respond to the skip command anymore, with either the remote and keyboard. I then have to start playing from a new playlist, and then it works for 10-20 times before failing to respond to skip command again (other commands work fine).

Well, I've been running 05 for about two days now, the good thing is that the stuttering is gone that was happening before. I wont be able to tell about the crash problems for a while however since it typically took my system about a week but for right now it did help it out considerably.

I can't switch to 1.5.0_05 until Monday as I'm leaving town tomorrow and don't want to miss what I'm supposed to tape this weekend. If it looks like you need more testers, I can switch back to the Nvidia decoder and downgrade to 1.5.0_05 then.

Switched to the Sonic decoder on Monday and so far the UI hasn't crashed. Before that, it was crashing every day.

I've had it happen when using Sage in a standalone configuration. Probably 5 times now it's crashed. It's happened using both the intervideo 7 and Nvidia Purevideo video decoders. So, in my case at least, I don't think the decoders are the problem.

I'm in the process of updating all my drivers etc and then i'll down-rev my java.

The irritating thing is that I ran 4.0.2 for a long time and had NO problems with it. I upgrade to the new version and it's doing this.

FWIW: This is a fresh install of Windows MCE.

Hmmm...

I'm using an ATI video card and NVIDIA decoders and this happens to me, too. Sometimes, however, Sage will crash even when I'm not watching something. Like this afternoon. But I had just updated to 5.0.02.90, so maybe there was something going on with that. I have Java 1.5.0_06 installed, but I've been having problems like this for much longer than that version of Java's been out.
