I haven't either.

So based on govgeek's comments (again assuming that we're all getting the same type of crash, that leaves us with JRE/Sage 5.0.2 as the common points.

COMMON:
Sage 5.0.2

MAYBE:
JRE 1.5.0_05 (Anyone have crashes with JRE 1.4.2_xx?)

NOT COMMON:
Video capture device
Video card/drivers (happened with ati and nvidia video card)
processor type (happened with intel/amd singlecore/dual core)
Happens during playback (happens during menu navigation for atarijeff)
NVidia PureVideo decoders (also seen with cyberlink)
Nvidia motherboard (also seen with Intel 875)

POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
1. Rollback JRE version:
a) 1.5.0_05 -- I've tried this and still have had crashes
b) 1.4.2_xx -- Kirby has tried this and so far so good
c) 1.5.0_07 -- Seems like someone has tried this. It does not contain the bugfix for the JNI handle problem, so this JRE should still have problems with leaking handles.

Notes:
-- Seems that there may be multiple problems going on here. For many people, downgrading jre to (1.4.2_xx) seems to have resolved the issue.
-- It looks like most people having a problem are using an nvidia chipset (motherboard), but there are also reports of intel chipsets having crashing issues.
-- Thought it may have been dual-core related, but single core users are also experiencing the crashes.
-- Jeff (Narflex) mentioned it may also have something to do with the nvidia decoders. Recently, there have been posts regarding crashes with sage default decoders as well.

I was contemplating this myself today. There's a good chance we'll do just that.

I have 5.0.....not sure which exact number 5, 5.01, 5.02. An ATI 9800 Pro with the latest ATI drivers and Sage is crashing quite often. It sometimes crashes during playback with no error message, nothing in the log, and nothing in event viewer. It would also crash during the day when it was doing nothing but sitting idle. It has been doing this since before V. 5 even came out.

We were using the nvidia decoder before, but have recently wiped the drive which contained the operating system and Sage. We then reinstalled using no third party codecs of any type, yet we still have weird crashes. Now we get the crash to desktop, crash while idle, and now sometimes the buttons of the remote stop working....kind of like Sage is losing focus....some of the buttons work but most do not.

I will try some of the suggestions that were posted and reply.

I'm indeed using a P4 2.6 HT. The machine is a Dell Dimension 8300 and I think the motherboard is based on an intel chipset. The video card in that computer is an NVidia 5200 based card (standard Dell at the time). So far it seems to work fine with Java 1.4, crash with 1.5_05 and leak with 1.5_06. For now I'm sticking with the 1.4 release.

Oh, I also switch the PureVideo decoder to Automatic deinterlace from Smart, made a big improvement in the smoothness of video playback.

I was only using the default Sage decoders when crashing so the nVidia decoders are not common in my case. I downgraded to 1.4.2_11 and not a single crash since. Not even when creating thumbnails in the picture library, which was the spot I could reproduce the crash 100% of the time before.

I have switched Java back to 1.4.2_11, updated to Sage TV 5.0.3 beta and switched back to using the NVidia decoders. I will let that go for a few days and see if that continues to work for me.

wanted to post an update related to how my setup has been doing.

The last change I made was applying the microsoft dual-processor hotfix. In addition to making my X2 3800+ system more responsive, i havent' had a UI crash in the past two days. I'm still using JRE 1.5.0_05. I'll keep hammering at it to see if I can get it to crash.

Kirby, have you tried installing the MS hotfix?

My current config:
MSI K8NGM2-FID motheboard
Athlon 64 X2 3800
1GB dual channel corsair value select
Onboard Geforce 6150 video

Windows XP SP2
JRE 1.5.0_02
Sage 5.0.2 with webserver and comskip playback import
Forceware 84.21 drivers
purevideo .196 decoders
nvidia registry modifications to disable dual-core optimizations
microsoft dual-core hotfix

I just remembered another thing I have done recently to the system... Having previously uninstalled ac3filter, i was expecting the machine to use the nvidia audio decoder. When I checked in media player, the default would always come up as iviaudio (Intervideo). Tried setting the merit for Nvidia Audio Decoder higher with no luck. Whenever playing video, the nvidia decoder properties dialog would only show the video tabs. I uninstalled powerdvd and that seemed to fix my audio decoder problem. Now the audio tab shows up properly and when checking in media player, the correct audio properties dialog comes up. I don't know exactly what was wrong, but that may also have something to do with my crashes.

I got a crash today.

After extensive watching today (yes, I don't have other things to do on a nice Saturday), I finally had a crash tonight.

Guess I'll try reverting back to JRE 1.4.2_11 and see what happens.

I'm still running perfect here on 1.4.2. Still havent installed the AMD dual core driver, or the MS hotfix.

Well my one instance of the R5000 dvr app crashed this morning (not sage related) so since I had to reboot I went ahead and installed the AMD cpu driver and the MS hotfix. Probably was a mistake to do it, but who knows..

At least those patches didn't seem to make things worse. Hopefully you have the same luck with those as I did. Like I said, subjectively, the MS hotfix seems to have made my machine more responsive. Context switch between applications, launching additional applications, loading, all *seems* more responsive.

I uninstalled JRE 1.5.0_05 and installed JRE 1.4.2_11 last night. So far so good.

well that was the wrong thing to do. whole system locked up just now. was recording 2 shows, and just got a windows BSOD. Not sure if it was the "hotfix" or the amd driver, but I am probably going to uninstall the driver, and if that doesnt help, reinstall the whole damn system.

So far, so good. It also seems to have resolved a few other issues I've been having, namely (a) loud volume when changing channels or starting playing of a recording if the service is enabled, and (b) slow UI at times - particularly starting playing of a recording.

Mine crashes, too

Since installing Sage on my new system about a week ago, I have experienced numerous crashes and hangs. Yesterday I downgraded my java to 1.4.2_11, and also installed the MS dual core patch since I have one of those, too. The system seems more stable now than before, but still I had one system hang and one "sage needs to shut down..." type of error today. It's worth mentioning that problems have occurred only when issuing commands from the remote, such as changing channels (as opposed to just watching a recording.)

My system is as follows:
mobo: ECS C19-A SLI (1.0A) Socket T (LGA 775) NVIDIA nForce4 SLI XE
Pentium D 805 Dual Core
2GB memory
ATI Radeon X1300PRO
Windows MCE & MCE remote
2 Cat's Eye DTA-150 & 1 FusionHDTV5 RT Lite, all running digital only

I know I am playing with fire right now. I have three recordings going, one of which I am watching live (NBA game) and I just know that the system is going to crash before midnight.

My last crashes so far, which did not appear with 1.4.2 and without ms hotfix and amd dual core driver, go like this: they happen during playback, no commands being sent, no background recordings starting/ending. the video will just freeze, then nothing, remote doesnt work, no mouse/kb response. then after about 5-10 seconds, the system jumps to the BSOD, which only remains for a second or so, then the system warm boots. No messages in event log, nothing in sage log, no program memory dump files around anywhere. So I really have no way to diagnose this further, other than the uninstall the hotfix and the amd driver.

Kirby: I've seen one of these crashes. I'm trying to remember when I saw this (before or after downgrading to 1.4.2). I think it was before.

It looks like we may be dealing with two types of crashes.

1) Crash kills sage UI to desktop. Can find an entry in the application event log. No jvm error log and nothing in sage logs. I saw this often with JRE 1.5.0_05. Seems to be resolved by rolling back to 1.4.2_11.

2) Video freeze for 10-20 seconds, BSOD (really quick, I couldn't see what the error was), reboot. No jvm error log and nothing in sage logs. Kirby and I have experienced this one.

If you have seen crash type 2, can you reply and post your system configuration?

Thanks
