Since downgrading to 1.5_05 the only crash to desktops I've had have been when trying to playback a recording which is somehow faulty. I'll go to play the show and it make make this loud squawk then drop to desktop with no errors. I'm able to play that show fine in windows media player as well as playing it back on my laptop using placeshifter. This doesn't happen all the time.

*NOTE: I'm using a directv box which is serially controlled by sage.
The only thing I can think of that may lend a clue is that recently when changing a channel it send the change channel command gets sent but it sits there on the directv banner which gets showen when you change a channel and appears to get "stuck". I can verify that the channel has actually changed and the show is playing by hooking a tv directly to the satellite box, but sage is stuck on the banner. I half wonder if the shows with the "squawk and a drop to desktop" are also ones where this occured when changing the channel for a recording.

I'm really at a loss as to what to do since i get no error messages whatsoever.

I think i'd like to at least give the JRE 1.4.2_11 a shot, but for the sake of continuity I'd like someone to post a link to 1.4.2_11 so I'm sure to have the exact same file. The only thing my searches have turned up are j2re 1.4.2_11 thus far and I'm not certain it's the right file.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I'd be happy to try them out.

I'm getting down to the wire on this as I need to leave town for a few weeks in a little less than 2 weeks. I'm very concerned that Sage is going to puke while I'm gone and I'll be stuck with nothing recorded when I return.

Thanks.

FWIW: I'm running an nforce 2 motherboard chipset (MSI k7n2 delta2 which ran fine on sage 4.0.2 up until 2 weeks ago). ATI video card. I have NVIDIA decoders installed but they aren't being used (intervideo 7 is although this happend using the sage default decoders as well), and an AMD 2500+ barton cpu.

Are you sure? If you have a BSOD, there should be a dumpfile generated. First change the Startup/Recovery options for XP to save a Kernel dump, if it's currently a minidump. If already a kernel dump you can debug the last log, otherwise once you have another crash it will put the dump file in:
C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP or C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MEMORY.DMP
Then try following the instructions for debugging here.

This seems complicated but in the end should tell you which driver file is causing the BSOD.

Hi Bitbyte:

Here is the link to download JRE 1.4.2_11 ...

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

Which is called Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition 1.4.2_11

Therefore j2re & the source of all the confusion...

I originally went to 1.5... But had another crash after about 4 days...

I've now been up running been running with 1.4.2_11 Since the 21st & NO Crashes !!

Bruce

I fixed the URL (Forgot I was registered with Sun! D'oh )

Thanks Bob!!

Before upgrading my server to Sage 5.0.2 this weekend I downgraded my Java version to 1.4.2_11 as well.

No proeblems at all!

Same for my main HTPC client. 5.0.2 and 1.4.2_11.

I'm running Purevideo, btw.

processor type (happened with intel/amd singlecore/dual core)
Happens during playback (happens during menu navigation for atarijeff)
NVidia PureVideo decoders (also seen with cyberlink)
Nvidia motherboard (also seen with Intel 875)
That seems to mirror my own experience. I've had 5.0.2 drop to the desktop during playback and haven't really delved into it too much. However, I am running 5.0.2 with Java 1.5.x. I'll have to check for the specific Java version when I'm home. I'm not using PureVideo decoders. While I'm not sure of the chipset it's definitely not nVidia as my Sage box is an old Dell Precision 420 (dual Xeon) workstation.

Before down-rev'ing to JRE 1.4.2 I enabled debug logging and captured this log. I started sage, played the recording I have that crashes sage to the desktop and then saved this log file.

I'm not sure if it's related in any way to my original crash to desktop issue, but it's been happening more and more and I'd still like to resolve it. I hope the log file sheds some light on the problem.

allow me to pile on to the 1.5 = crash 1.42=bliss.

I ran 1.5 for a long time, but an upgrade from version 4.something to 5.something of Sage made the combo unstable. I've uninstalled 1.5 and installer 1.4.2_10 and all has been A-OK for a couple of days.

Interestingly, when you uninstall Java, Sage throws up an error saying it needs Java 1.4 - so Sage error messages are still recommending Java 1.4 even if the Sage installer prefers 1.5

UPDATE:
I've sovled my squawk then crash problem. I was using the Intervideo 7 video and audio decoders. Up until now I've only changed the video decoder settings, to noavail. Tonite I changed the video AND audio decoders to Nvidia and the crash to desk from that one show has stopped. Additionally, I had another recording from today which would make a horrible buzzing sound and then crash sage. This is also working correctly now. I've changed to 1.4.2 just to be safe tho.

Just wanted to update this thread. Since I installed JRE 1.4.2_11, I haven't had any crashes. That makes 5 days so far with no crashes. I haven't had another of the BSOD crashes either.

Well this figures. The day I post "all is well" I crash again This time was a little different though. I was watching a show recording with a network encoder (MyTheatre). I shut down MT while watching and the pic froze for a while. When I started MT back up and pressed 'stop' in Sage - Crash. Log file attached. No JAVA logs.

NO Crash JAVA 1.4.2_11.

I was having major problems with the newer 1.5 versions of JAVA. Did like this forum suggested and switched to 1.4.2_11. No crash for 2+ weeks.

My results so far...
1_5_06 = 2 crashes a day
1_5_05 = 1 crash every two days
1.4.2_11 = No crashes so far (4 days)

I have not been able to use Java 1.4.2_11 as I need Java 1.5.x for the LM Gestion XMLTV importer.

JRE 1.5.5 and 1.5.4 both proved unstable (they crashed with a Microsoft "report this error to MS" dialog, the crash diagnosis blamed Java). However JRE 1.5.2 is working like a champ (13 days uptime and running, no crashes or other glitches).

For me JRE 1.5.2 seems as stable as 1.4.2_11 and still enables the XMLTV importer to work, if you need Java 1.5 for something, use VMR9 and/or suffered the crash to desktop problem give it a go.

Cheers

Eric

It seems to me that I've read on another thread that crashes with SageTV and Java 1.5 (6) was related to exclusive full screen. And that SageTV has enabled some sort of workaround that doesn't suppress it completely.

I've not verified this myself, but I can assure you that with VMR9 + Java 1.5 update 6, I experience no crahs at all. I don't use exclusive full screen because I also have some utilities I made that display floating transparent notification windows (like when a phone call is coming / e-mail / changing volume) so exclusive fs wouldn't play nice with those.

Also I don't run the SageTV UI 24h a day. I use the SageTV service and only launch SageTV UI when needed (thanks to the Harmony Remote that powers on all TV equipment and launch SageTV). This may or may not improves UI reliability.

Regards,
Stéphane.

Java downgrade, I'll bite

I just found this thread in search of a solution to my regular UI crashes.

I also use the Nvidea Purevideo software decoder and have an NVidia video card (GeForce FX 5200).

I also get the crash when I am watching a recorded show (my usual Sage usage) using the UI.

I was using Java 1.5.06. Now I've downgraded to 1.4.2.12. I'll report back on how it is going in a few days.

Ken

It has been 10 days since downgrading my Java, I so far no Sage crashes! I am very pleased!

For me, problem solved, and I no longer have to tell my friends that Sage crashes from "time-to-time"!

still no crashes

No crashes in the past month. Perhaps SAGE should specifically point users to stable Java releases.
