Maybe they finally realized that supporting the 3rd party efforts will sell more of their hardware...

I'm fairly certain they wouldnt' release any of their own IP that they aren't obligated to provide under the GPL. But---from the general counsel's position I am sure she is asking questions now as to why all of the required code that should be made public has not been released and this i'm hoping is what gets the ball rolling.

Funny thing is--is that I have never once mentioned sage in any of my correspondences. Never even mentioned what I would be using this for...and they never asked either. Its completely irrelevant and it really only boils down to whether Dlink has complied with the terms of the GPL in providing the source code. I am surprised however that they haven't asked!

WOW, I don't know how I've missed this thread but this is sounding pretty cool so far! If anyone else is interested I did a quick lil web search and found a pretty decent review of this. He even pops the cover off the case so we can peek inside. http://www.tomsnetworking.com/2006/0...dmi/index.html

Question

Looked this thing up on newegg and 1 of the 10 customer reviews said it can only play back up to an 8mbps stream and that wasn't sufficient for HD mpeg2. Seems to me that w/ all the "hi-end" outputs the thing has it would be designed to handle HD media properly. Specifically when its priced in the $200 range. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Looking at the specs, I am not sure wether the unit will play files with ac3 sound. It has a spdif output, but I can nowhere see that it will output digital sound, as they only say divx/xvid with mp3.

Have them take a look at the 320 sources too

Have them take a look at the 320 sources too because they are just as/more incomplete WRT GPL as the 520. I'm impressed you've managed to get any sort of a response from them. Someone from the 320 list went down this exact same route just after revision 3 of the 320's came out.

Hey All-quick update: I received an email from Dlinks Attorney today. She said that she has been in contact with their "vendor" (which i believe to be redsonic probably) and has spoken to their counsel and management team and told them to get the source code together "ASAP" (her words). She said it is now just a matter of having them put it together and provide it to her--which she will pass along to me. She again said this will be done ASAP because it is starting to take up some of her time and wants to just close this out. She expects to have somthing next week hopefully. My guess is that it will be in the next few weeks but we'll see. Its nice having Dlinks counsel working on 'my/our' behalf and doing all the legwork on this. She sure holds alot more weight than I do. I'm pretty confident based on her responses we will be getting something usefull from them in the near future. The real question is will we beat sage to the punch? Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, I have a feeling we will. Anyway--i'll post back next week with another update.

Super impressive! One of the above posts already asked, but I'll be a pain and repeat it, does this cover the sources for just the 520 or the 520 and 320 as well? I have a wireless 320 I would LOOOOVE to make an extender.

I believe the source for the 320 were already complete. The problem is it was using proprietary modules. (and also it's graphic chip would not be that good to handle sagetv since it is limited to 8bit indexed colors)

I sure hope we'll see it, this is most likely the best short term hd extender option so far

Quick Update--Nothing too exciting unfortunately. Heard back from Dlinks GC--she said they they recently released their source information however are still waiting for the sources from the vendor (sigma). She's putting pressure on them and hopes to get something going soon. Not too great but I'll keep plugging along and give an update whenever I hear something new.

yup--this is where it can slow down.....i'm surprised sage doesn't put some legal pressure of their own on Dlink--it would be a little more persuasive coming from a corporation who uses the technology rather than an enviromental lawyer....lol

It seems that the approach that you took, got the GC's at least. Lets keep hopes up that the GC will just want to get this issue off his/her plate and push hard enough to make it happen!

maybe from a strategic sales standpoint dlink are finally figuring out that making this thing portable to sage, btv, gb-pvr etc. will provide sales as good as the MVP?
