My pvr sits behind a NAT router so I don't bother with software firewalls.
If any of my friends or family report network problems to me (because I work in IT I am a mobile IT helpdesk I'm sure others have similar experiences) I switch off all the firewalls first. Half the time the problem is related to their config |

Just noticed this old post..
This guys approach may be ok to protect him against attacks coming in form outside but it does not stop trojan horses etc leeking out! Always use a fire wall!

Setup: - Server - Intel 3.4G D + XP, 2Gig ram, 3TB of raid. All running in service mode with 2 Hauppauge HVR4000 Running v7 with LMGestion's XMLTV and DG2XML. I also have the web server running. Client - x2 plus PlaceShifter on various machines including eeepc Ubuntu 8.04. I am streaming Live TV to my PocketPC. Stable but can use DVB-S on second HVR400. |

Gotta disagree. Software firewall is a waste of time if you sit behind a NAT firewall. Nothing's coming in and you have the Trojans handled with AV. If it's a dedicated HTPC and you aren't doing emails or surfing non-trusted sites, then no AV required either.
Behind a NAT firewall, no email or unreliable websites, where does the trojan come from?
